Have you ever had a tear creep down your cheek during an emotional conversation, and you turned away from your friend as you said, “I’m sorry. I don’t know what’s wrong with me,” and quietly wiped the tears away and tried to compose yourself, feeling as if you are not allowed to cry? I’ve done it. I’ve had friends do it, too.
Join me as I discuss the importance of being aware of our emotions and how to navigate them.

"Having our hearts rooted in Christ and establishing a solid relationship with God over time is like an anchor tethering us to the truth when the enemy tries to pull us into the undercurrent of darkness."

Caring for Your Physical Health to Improve Overall Well-Being (Part 1 of 4)
Losing my ability to exercise or even pick up my children because of chronic pain and fatigue was exasperating. It brought about a state of depression and spiritual apathy…I am acutely aware of the importance of caring for my whole being—because it’s all connected…if we suffer in one part of our being, the other parts suffer.

Has someone ever disappointed you, but you can’t pinpoint why? Perhaps it’s not what they did, but what they didn’t do?
Disappointment is usually not because of anything, in particular, someone did, but a result of unmet expectations.

Jesus guarantees we will have trouble in the world. He wasn’t specific about living in a foreign culture. Still, I dare say there will be even more tribulation living cross-culturally. Knowing people are praying for you will bring the Lord’s peace to your life.

Just over a year ago, at the beginning of March 2021, I began writing my first book! I finished writing at the end of June 2021. It was certainly a work guided by the Holy Spirit. It's hard to believe it's already published and available! If you know anyone who would benefit from reading Living Uprooted, send them a link or tag them in this post.

Adapting to God's Plans While Holding Our Plans Loosely
As you prepare for your missionary journey, even if you are in the middle of it, adaptability is key. Just like flight plans, life plans can change. Some changes happen quickly, maybe overnight. Others happen more slowly, even over a few years. They can change a little, like a slight deviation, or a lot, turning your world upside down.

When we read the Gospels, Jesus tells us He has overcome the world. Many people focus on the “overcome the world” part of that Scripture and believe Christians should not have trouble. But if we look more closely at what it says just before that, we see that we will have to walk through trials. Jesus says, “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). What Jesus is saying is that trials and tribulation will come, but we have hope and peace in Him to walk through them.
The victory is not in avoiding tribulation but standing firm in our faith as we walk through it.

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:12).
As we pray for discernment to be aware of the schemes of the devil, let us all put on the whole armor of God that we may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil as well (Ephesians 6:11).

No matter how your community develops, the most critical aspect is love—love for others, and love for yourself. Jesus told us to love our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:39). But He also gave a new command to “love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another” (John 13:34). He was telling His disciples to go and be Jesus with skin on.

There is no way to prepare for the curveballs life may throw at us, but having someone to walk beside us and help field them is beyond priceless. The perception of community is different for everyone, much like what we each need to be comfortable in our homes. How much we value or desire community will likely shine through when we find ourselves floundering like a fish out of water in our new environment, desperate for some semblance of familiarity.

Through all the adjustments you will have to make in your journey with adapting to a new culture, setting up a home, and beginning your missionary work, it’s important to remind yourself of what matters most—a community of Christ.
I pray you will develop those deep relationships and forge those lasting bonds so that you can be Jesus with skin on for someone else, and they can be Jesus with skin on for you too.

Our organization taught us about the four phases of culture shock:
The honeymoon phase - things are great and wonderful, we’re excited for all things new
The frustration phase - all things new begins to frustrate, as we are unsure of what to expect
The adjustment phase - we begin to understand how things are done and what to expect
The acceptance phase - we accept how things are done, and prepare for the realities
I have certainly gone through all these stages, and it seems they behave much like the stages of grief. There is no distinct transition from one to the next, and they seem to ebb and flow between phases. The shift is different for everyone, and often it will catch you off guard.
"We experience culture shock in part because those in our host cultures don’t think like us, act like us, or even understand the world as we do. Though I would not say that everything in America is done right, it’s done the way I expect it to be."

No matter where you live, it is important to have a place for daily respite. It feels even more essential living in a foreign country. Navigating a new country and culture takes a lot of energy, and to have that safe place to relax and decompress is very important.

There is a sense of home that everyone knows. That familiarity is what brings a sigh of relief, knowing that you can relax in your own environment, set up just the way you like, with your own furniture. No matter where you live, it is important to have a place for daily respite. It feels even more essential living in a foreign country. Navigating a new country and culture takes a lot of energy, and to have that safe place to relax and decompress is very important.
That being said, it’s important to remember that a house does not define home. I had put quite a bit of work into our home and we ended up having to leave after living there three years. It’s not that I regret doing the work, but it was sad to let it go. I had attempted to put down roots in a temporary, earthly home—that we were only renting. It was a reminder that my roots are in Christ, not in a house.

Embracing change and welcoming the uprooting of our lives goes against the grain for so many people. So many people have this notion that they need to buy a home, settle down, and lay down some roots. It is important to realize that, like our identity, our roots are in Christ, not in the pleasures or comforts of the world.
"Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him" (1 John 2:15).
Settling down and trying to conform to any culture is not from God.
Embracing change, especially in the areas God is working on in your heart, can be the most God-honoring thing you do. Keep your eyes open to see all the marvelous works He is doing in you and around you.

The chaos of moving is not something one simply gets used to, and I won’t sugarcoat it and say it gets easier. With every move, I would leave a little piece of myself behind, and I felt like I was always the new kid. I had to learn to adapt, alter, and adjust to new homes, cities, schools, friends, etc. And it took its toll. My world crumbled a little more each time I had to say goodbye to my close friends.
It is not easy to leave family and friends. Trust in the Lord to help you through these adjustments and goodbyes. He will be with you, and go before you, just as He said to Moses, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest” (Exodus 33:14).
We can trust in the Lord to help us through these adjustments and goodbyes.

When Bryan and I were married, moving into our first house was my forty- seventh move (yes, forty-seven moves!). I was thirty-six years old.
I have come to embrace change as a constant, but now it is coupled with the unchanging, unwavering love of God.
Embracing change has served me well for life in general, but especially as a missionary. The seasons of life are continually changing. We can’t expect things to stay the same overseas any more than we would expect them to stay the same in America.
“Embracing change and being able to adapt, alter, and adjust is more than just a coping mechanism. Nothing in life stays the same.”

Unmet expectations aren’t reserved for personal relationships. Organizations, just as the church, is full of broken people working under the grace of God. Sometimes, their way of doing things has come about after many trials and many errors until they finally found a way that works for almost everyone. It’s impossible to please everyone.
“Don’t let what you consider inefficiency overshadow the overarching goal of sharing the gospel.”

When Bryan and I were on deputation, I’m embarrassed to admit, we did not communicate clearly with some of our family members. When we stayed with some of them during a “work trip,” they expected we would spend more time visiting with them.
Looking back, I believe that, had we communicated our schedule and given them a clear idea of when we would visit, we could have avoided the conflict.

An invitation!
Hello! I'm so glad y'all are here! I am so blessed by the community God is establishing around me as I begin the next journey He has called me to. I hope and pray that what is posted here will always, always point to Christ.
Thank you all so much for your prayer and support through this writing journey!
I am super excited about my book, but I will say I did not write it without help! It was Holy Spirit inspired and I pray it will be a blessing to those who read it. I also had people sharing their stories with me, and providing ideas of what to include.
That being said, I would like to invite you to contribute your wisdom and encouragement! I'm hoping to start putting short devotions up on this page. If you have a devotion you would like to share, please email me at [email protected].
Devotions should be under or around 300 words and should include a brief story, a scripture verse, and a life application teaching.
Here's a question to get you started:
What keeps you in the Word of God every day?
I look forward to your Holy Spirit inspired encouragement!
Many blessings in Christ!
Please Share!
