This page is dedicated to the Urdu language. I post a word of the day with usage and translation. Most of these people are located in India and Pakistan.

Urdu originated in the heart of present day India and is now the national language of Pakistan. While pure Urdu is spoken and understood by only a few, the common language is familiar to nearly a billion people around the world. When I say Urdu, I mean both Urdu and Hindi, because they are practically the same when spoken. The major difference is in their separate writing systems. Urdu is written

Usage: پچھلے سال کے سیلاب کے متاثرین ابھی بھی بے گھر ہیں۔
Transliteration: pichhle sāl ke sēlāb ke mutāsirīn abhi bhi be ghar heņ.

Word of the day: šamsi tufān - Solar Storm - شمسی طوفان

Usage: کل رات شمسی طوفان زمین کے ساتھ ٹکرایا۔
Transliteration: kal rāt šamsi tufān zamīn ke sāth ttakrāya.
Translation: Yesterday night a solar storm hit Earth.
Literally: yesterday night solar storm earth with bumped.

Word of the day: kamāl ka - amazing - کمال کا

Usage: یہ بڑی کمال کی عمارت ہے۔
Transliteration: yē barrī kamāl ki imārat he.
Translation: It is quite an amazing building
Literally: this big amazement of building is.

Word of the day: xarāb - out of order / faulty - خراب

Usage:میرا انٹرنیٹ آج کل خراب ہے۔
Transliteration: mēra inttarnett aj kal xarāb he.
Translation: my internet is not working these days
Literally: my internet today tomorrow faulty is.

Word of the day: nīchē - down - نیچے

Usage: اس بچے کو جھولے سے نیچے اتارو۔
Transliteration: us bachē ko jhūlē sē nīchē utāro.
Translation: Get that child off of the swing.
Literally: that child (m.) to swing from down lower.

Note: utārna means to lower (something). 'To lower yourself' is utarna. Imperative utro vs utāro.

Word of the day: phir - ag*in - پھر

Usage: پھر بولو کیا کہہ رہے تھے؟
Transliteration: phir bolo kiā keh rahē thē?
Translation: Tell me what were you saying ag*in?
Literally: ag*in tell what say -ing were?

Word of the day: ghamandd - arrogance - گھمنڈ

Usage: میں اس کے ساتھ بات نہیں کر سکتی۔ وہ بے حد گھمنڈی آدمی ہے۔
Transliteration: meņ us kē sāth bāt nahi kar sakti. vo bēhad ghamanddi ādmi he.
Translation: I (f.) cannot talk to him. He is a very arrogant man.
Literally: I him with talk no do can (f.). He limitlessly arrogant man is.

Usage: گھمنڈ روح کو کھا جاتی ہے۔
Transliteration: ghamandd rūh ko khā jāti* he.
Translation: Arrogance eats at your soul.
Literally: arrogance soul to eat go is.

* Note: jāti here signifies completion of an act - it makes the sentence perfective. It also embues the sentence with the nuance of moving on after the action is complete. Other such words are lēti and dēti (in the same declination) which respectively give the nuance of completing the action for oneself/itself and completing the action for someone/something.

Usage: میں روزانہ اپنی بلی کو گوشت کھلاتا ہوں۔
Transliteration: meņ rozāna apni billi ko gosht khilāta hūņ.
Translation: I feed my cat some meat every day.

Word of the day: fīsad - percent - فیصد

Usage: کہتے ہیں کہ اسٹاک مارکٹ میں دس فیصد سے بھی کم لوگ کامیاب ہوتے ہیں۔
Transliteration: kehte hæņ ke isttāk mārkitt meņ das fīsad se bhi kam log kāmiāb hote hæņ.
Translation: They say less than ten percent of people find success in the stock market.

Word of the day: pīčha čhorrna - to leave alone - پیچھا چھوڑنا

Usage: پردے کا پیچھا چھوڑو! وہ پھٹ جاےَ گا۔
Transliteration: parde ka pīčha čhorro! vo phatt jāe ga.
Translation: Leave the curtain alone! It will tear.
Literally: curtain of backside leave! it tear go will.

Notes:

- pīčha is derived from pīčhe, which means 'back'. So the expression literally means 'leave my back alone'.

- phattna can either mean 'to explode' or 'to tear', depending on the object it is being used on. pattāxa (fire cracker) phatt-ta hæ. kaprre (clothes) phatt-te hæņ. jūte (shoes) phatt-te hæņ. ghubāra (balloon) phatt gaya.
