Why start a podcast?

Hooked on Science is Julija Cubins’ passion project that also happens to a be a part of her dissertation at the University of Minnesota. This podcast was conceived after she spent many long days and nights thinking about what her future as a researcher and scientist might look like. She realized that her favorite part of her Master’s degree was breaking down the research she conducted into accessible and digestible way for farmers, other scientists, and her friends and family! BUT she also realized that the way academic researchers communicate their findings are inaccessible, dry, and just plain boring. While it’s unlikely that the traditional methods of presenting a poster or PowerPoint at a conference or publishing a manuscript in a scientific journal will go away any time soon, what are some other avenues that researchers can use to share their cool research? Maybe a podcast!

The idea behind Hooked on Science is that everyone should be able to learn in a way that makes sense for them, and is convenient! If you have a smartphone, you already have access to an endless library of podcasts, so why not add one more? Hooked on Science will be your weekly fix to learn a little about the world around you. Each month will have a broad theme and each episode in that month will give us an understanding of some of the researching happening in that field. For example, the theme for February 2020 will be Horticulture (think fruits and vegetables), and you'll hear from four delightful co-hosts, who each work with a different yummy crop.

In order for this to work as a research project for my dissertation, Julija needs as many listeners as possible! Share the pod with your family, your best friend, and the person delivering your Amazon packages, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts, so you never miss an episode!
