The Asanović family katun is located on the eastern slopes of Bjelasica mountain, about an hour's drive from Kolašin. Radoman and Zorica Asanović, who own the katun, are among the first to arrive in this part of the mountain at the end of spring and among the last to leave in late autumn. They bring their cows and other livestock from the village of Slatina to their summer retreat. This off-grid area remains essentially unchanged from centuries past, with only a few new solar panels providing feeble electricity. The katun features a charming garden, fresh spring water, and expansive pastures. Recently, two new wooden huts and a designated camping area have been added. The family is known for their warm hospitality and for serving traditional mountain cuisine made from locally sourced ingredients.
Step back in time: Katun life in Montenegro
Montenegro's katuns are traditional highland settlements, typically used as summer pastures by shepherds. Nestled in the rugged mountains, these seasonal villages offer a unique glimpse into the region's pastoral lifestyle, where families would move their livestock to higher altitudes to graze during the warmer months. The katuns are characterised by their simple, often wooden-built huts, and the lifestyle here revolves around animal husbandry and dairy production, especially cheese. Today, many katuns also attract visitors seeking to experience Montenegro's cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes.

Ivonina kuzina – Balabani village in Zeta (continued)
The idea of Ivona’s Cuisine started several years ago, as Ivona was well known for her skills in recreating old receipts during birthdays or family celebrations, and it was followed up with the idea to create a small brand of home-made jams, liqueurs and similar products.
The family, with three adult children, enjoys their village life, and starting this summer, they have also decided to venture into tourism. Their offer focuses on products from their garden and orchards – this household is perfect for small group visits and sampling of the local cuisine of this area.

Ivonina kuzina – Balabani village in Zeta
The farm of the Miranovic family is situated in the village of Balabani, in Zeta Valley, a 20 km drive from Podgorica. The family focuses on fruit production and has about 300 seedlings of various fruits in the orchard surrounding the house (plums, pears, apricots, figs, cherries, sour cherries, quinces, etc). They also have a small vineyard, producing very limited amounts of wine and brandy).

Coming of age... 18 years of Montenegro Adventures
Like in every coming-of-age story, starting with a huge enthusiasm that was primarily based on blissful ignorance, baby steps through our first product development and marketing efforts, volatile changes that are the characteristics of doing business in the Balkans, slow learning by doing in an upward spiral of new encounters, partnerships and friendships, business barriers, capacity building and small victories, pandemic, slow recovery... and here we are 😊
Our initial slogan when we were established on 10 August 2006 was Life is a journey! And what a journey it has been so far! We hope that through all that turmoil, we have reached some degree of maturity, resilience, and personal and professional growth.
We believe that this would be the right time to pursue formal certification and prove that our business meets the global benchmark for the relevant standards. We are happy to announce that Montenegro Adventures is now ISO certified. We obtained three of the main ISO standards: ISO 9001 for quality management, ISO 14001 for environmental management, and ISO 27001 for information security management.

Konoba Žlijebi – Sikimić Rural Household (continued)
Nikola's family decided to open their home to inspire others in Montenegro to appreciate and preserve their village traditions. It is absolutely necessary to make reservations in advance (groups from 6-30 pax). Upon arrival, the guests usually take a walk through this tiny village to the Church of St. Nikola, situated at the other end of the village, enjoying the view to the entrance of the Boka Bay and the Adriatic Sea on one side and the mountains of Orjen and Lovcen on the other. After the brief walk, back to Konoba Zlijebi - it is possible to observe traditional meal preparation.
Depending on whether the meals are organized either in the gumno area in front of the konoba or inside. The meal depends on the time of the year and partly from products from the gardens, and it is a typical traditional meal from this region: prosciutto, a variety of cheese, proja (corn bred), olives, seasonal salads, lamb or veal with potatoes cooked under the iron lid (sač), homemade liqueurs and wine.
Konoba Žlijebi – Sikimić Rural Household
Žlijebi is a small village located about 700 meters above sea level, offering one of the most unique and original architectural experiences in Montenegro. The village houses are built from flagstones that are manually extracted and carved from the small local quarry. These stone panels have naturally straight edges, eliminating the need for additional building materials. This construction tradition began approximately 300 years ago. Our host, Nikola Sikimic spent his childhood in this village, and after his maritime career, he chose to return to this almost deserted village to renovate his own and then other houses using traditional methods with pegs, hammers, and almost forgotten building techniques.

Danas vam predstavljamo PUPAVCA!
🔸Upupa epops
Gnijezdo oblaže mahovinom, travom, sitnim korijenjem, a nekada i izmetom stoke, uglavnom u dupljama drveća i krovovima kuća.
Ova vrsta je zaštićena nacionalnim zakonodavstvom, a možemo je zapaziti u našim zaštićenim područjima Podgorice.

The Glimpse of the Balkans – New Regional Tour: The Age of the Ottomans
Sarajevo is the starting or ending point of several of the tours depicting the Ottoman heritage of the Balkans: craft and trade neighbourhoods, with their specific urban architecture, public buildings, bathhouses, clock towers, and mosques, still cherish that feeling of a busy oriental town.
The Ottoman Empire held the Balkans for five centuries, from late 14th to early 20th century. It conquered these lands when it was still a power on the rise, strengthened its grip during the centuries while it was the world’s most powerful Empire, and left significant cultural influence in the region. By this, we don’t just mean oriental architecture but also an unmissable influence on culture, music, food, and the way of life.
This tour is a product of the partnership between Sarajevo Insider, Robinson Travel and Montenegro Adventures.
The project The Glimpse of the Balkans is supported by USAID Economic Development, Governance and Enterprise Growth (EDGE).
