Bundaberg is a 2 year old Australian dark rum spirit drink (technically it's not a rum as it's just a whisker under 37.5% ABV). The company is named for Bundaberg in Queensland where the company was started.

Tasting Note
The nose is sweet with Demerara and molasses, spice and pepper and plenty of oak. The palate is dry with oak and spice, a little brown sugar sweetness and spice. The finish is spicy and woody.

Nose: Sweet, vinous fruits and orchard blossom are joined by notes of peach and dried mango. More floral notes of malt and honey are joined by cider apples.

Palate: Peach, apple, and honeyed pastry counter tingles of peppery spice before giving way to zesty grapefruit, vanilla sugar, and grape skins.

Finish: Soft pears and gently tannic oak, with redcurrants followed by pangs of peppery spice and roasted nuts.

Gibson's Finest Sterling Canadian Whisky

Rich and creamy mouthfeel with a plethora of sweet fruits and berries, citric zest and pith, a nuttiness, black pepper, and hints of spirit. Soft Corn.

Gibson’s blenders developed a recipe that would continue to express Sterling’s rich and creamy mouthfeel and flavourful palate, albeit with younger, and more readily available whiskies. Like all of Gibson’s whiskies, Sterling is aged in first fill Bourbon barrels from Kelvin Cooperage in Louisville, Kentucky.Gibson’s Sterling is a little less expensive than the ever-popular Gibson’s 12 year old, so many people think of it more as a mixing whisky. And while it’s true that it is a great mixer, it is also quite suitable to sip neat or on ice.

Nose: Sweet and fruity. There’s lots going on here, although it’s gentle and just a little bit restrained. Mild and slightly floral caramel notes evolve into sweet lemon candy, then Grand Marnier, pear juice, Welch’s grape juice, and purple grapes. An uncommon note – berries that last right through to the finish – adds some interest. A faint smell of plastic accompanies sweet rye spices and fresh water plants. And to finish it off, a slight nuttiness wafts up together with just a hint of spirit.

Palate: The luxurious Gibson’s mouthfeel returns: creamy with a slight slipperiness and kind of waxy. Although there are many fruity notes, the fruit – sweet soft yellow apples, berries, just hints of black prunes, and suggestions of cherry ice cream – does not overwhelm the palate. Caramel and barley sugar add sweetness. There are even some hints of marshmallow, but the palate quickly moves to citric zest. A slightly bitter oaky pull underlies hints of walnut, not so much the nut itself, but the walnut’s bitter skin. Black pepper notes fade quickly, leaving a pleasant warmth behind and, as with all good mixers, there is a trace of spirit.

Finish: Medium. Fading on tingly peppery spices and caramel. The berry tones return together with some slightly bitter fruit. Citric notes include both zest and pith. There is something way in the background that feels vaguely astringent.Empty Glass: Not a lot. Elements of oak sugars evoke slight aromas of rum butter, toffee, caramel, and fudge, then prune juice, wood ashes, and a slight sourness.

Yamazakura Blended Bottling Note
A blended whisky from Japan's Yamazakura range, which is brought to market by Japanese company Sasanokawa Shuzo. The name itself a portmanteau of two Japanese terms 'Yama' means 'mountain' and 'Sakura' means cherry tree. If you think about it, a portmanteau is kind of like a blend but with words, so this name is rather apt for a Japanese blended whisky.

William Lawson was born in Scotland between 1853 and 1859, and subsequently migrated to Ireland.

William Lawson’s Finest Blend is sweet and medium-bodied in style, with a high malt content. At its core is the single malt of Macduff distillery, married with various bold malts and grain whiskies with a fruit forward character – no peated whisky is added.

Lambay Whiskey is a partnership between Alexander Baring and Cyril Camus of Maison Camus, a well known Cognac producer. The whiskey takes it's name from Lambay Island, situated 3 miles off the coast of Dublin and is home not only to the Baring family since 1904.
The sourced whiskey is taken to Lambay Island to be finished in Cognac casks from Maison Camus for a period of 4 to 6 months before bottling. The marketing blurb that came with the samples told me that the sea and maritime winds around Lambay help influence the final flavours imbuing notes of iodine, seaweed and salt. Finally they take Lambay Island Trinity Well Water to cut the casks to bottling strength to 'perfectly enhance its smoothness.
We recently tried Lambay’s Cognac Finished Irish Whiskey. The whiskey carries no age statement, but you can garner from the fact that the distillery opened under a year ago that it must be sourced from somewhere else. Irish whiskey law stipulates spirit must be aged for a minimum of three years to be called Irish Whiskey. The whiskey is a blend of malt and cereal grains, aged in Bourbon, and finished in Cognac casks. Their distillery is on an island (Lambay Island) and although their single malt boasts sea air notes.

Colour: Maizola oil

Nose: pear drops and honeysuckle. Fruit salad sweets. Some light clove with toasted oak and a touch of salted caramel.

Palate: A sugary arrival - sweet vanilla infused white sugar and toffee apples. The grain spirit really pushes through with some lemon peel and warming ground ginger. A buttery note is broken up by toasted oak.

Finish: Quite floral with bitter oak tannins.

The Tullamore D.E.W is an Irish Whiskey brand based out of the Tullamore Distillery in County Offaly. Since 2010, it has been under the ownership of William Grant & Sons, the Scottish family firm behind some of the most successful Scotch whisky brands in the world, including Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Grant’s.
The XO Rum Cask Finish is a triple blend Irish whiskey finished in barrels that were previously used to mature Demerara Rum.
Smell: The first thing I noticed was the aroma of grains. Breakfast cereals – cardboard box included. Malty. Oatcakes. A touch of citrus oak. Lemon freshness. Then the rum comes through with caramel and raisins, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Taste: Soft, silky texture. Rum more prominent than on the nose. Caramel. Butterscotch. Cinnamon and nutmeg. Pineapple and a hint of banana. Cereals – muesli. Trail mix. Raisiny finish with lingering spice.

Thoughts: Despite a fairly powerful cask impact, the character of the grain spirit is still there. In other words, the whiskey is fully flavoured but well balanced. The spirit character comes through a little more on the nose while the rum takes centre stage on the palate but it all comes together to make a rather enjoyable wee dram.

Value for money: A whiskey of good quality at an incredibly reasonable price. A real bargain buy.
