5 Steps of Water Treatment
1. Coagulation/flocculation: Raw water from terminal reservoirs is drawn into mixing basins at our treatment plants where we add alum, polymer and sometimes lime and carbon dioxide. This process causes small particles to stick to one another, forming larger particles.
2. Sedimentation: Over time, the now-larger particles become heavy enough to settle to the bottom of a basin from which sediment is removed.
3.Filtration: The water is then filtered through layers of fine, granulated materials — either sand, or sand and coal, depending on the treatment plant. As smaller, suspended particles are removed, turbidity diminishes and clear water emerges.
4. Disinfection: To protect against any bacteria, viruses and other microbes that might remain, disinfectant is added before the water flows into underground reservoirs throughout the distribution system and into your home or business. Denver Water carefully monitors the amount of disinfectant added to maintain quality of the water at the farthest reaches of the system. Fluoride occurs naturally in our water but also is added to treated water.
5. Corrosion control: pH is maintained by adding alkaline substances to reduce corrosion in the distribution system and the plumbing in your home or business.

Drinking Water Quality: What You Need to Know
Most of us don’t think about the water we drink. We turn on a tap, fill a glass, and drink. But how much water do you really need to drink every day? Is the water you're drinking safe or would bottled water be safer? What can you do if your tap water suddenly became contaminated? Read on to find out how much you know about the drinking water in your own home.
How Much Water Do You Need?
Your body weight is more than 50% water. Without water, you couldn’t maintain a normal body temperature, lubricate your joints, or get rid of waste through urination, sweat, and bowel movements.
Not getting enough water can lead to dehydration, which can cause muscle weakness and cramping, a lack of coordination, and an increased risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. In fact, water is so important that a person couldn’t last more than five days without it.

Coagulation and Flocculation
Coagulation and flocculation are often the first steps in water treatment. Chemicals with a positive charge are added to the water. The positive charge of these chemicals neutralizes the negative charge of dirt and other dissolved particles in the water. When this occurs, the particles bind with the chemicals and form larger particles, called floc.
Sedimentation
During sedimentation, floc settles to the bottom of the water supply, due to its weight. This settling process is called sedimentation.
Filtration
Once the floc has settled to the bottom of the water supply, the clear water on top will pass through filters of varying compositions (sand, gravel, and charcoal) and pore sizes, in order to remove dissolved particles, such as dust, parasites, bacteria, viruses, and chemicals.
Disinfection
After the water has been filtered, a disinfectant (for example, chlorine, chloramine) may be added in order to kill any remaining parasites, bacteria, and viruses, and to protect the water from germs when it is piped to homes and businesses
WHAT IS ISO 45003:2021?
Some of you may have heard about a recent guidance standard ISO 45003:2021. This guidance standard has been introduced to support occupational health and safety management of psychological health and safety at work.
What is ISO 45003?
ISO 45003 - Psychological health and safety at work.
These guidelines are there to support managing psychosocial risks in the occupational workplace.
Psychosocial risks are those related to mental health and wellbeing, and this new phrase will become increasingly familiar as the implementation of ISO 45003 gathers momentum.
ISO 45003 is supporting guidance to be used within the existing management standard for Occupation Health & Safety Management, ISO 45001. Please note however that it is not a replacement or revision to the OH&S standard.
What does it aim to help you achieve?
The new guidance is aimed at reducing the negative outcomes for workers, which can include poor health and associated conditions and behaviours, as well as reduced job satisfaction, commitment and productivity.
Therefore, managing psychosocial risks can result in positive outcomes, including improved job satisfaction and therefore increased productivity.
The guidelines give examples of indicators relating to staff behaviours and changes in attitudes that may highlight where workers might require some form of organisational support or changes to existing working practices and processes.
The success of psychosocial risk management depends on commitment from all levels and functions of the organization, and the attitude, approach, and culture.
The structure of the guidance follows the existing structure of ISO 45001:2018 and is therefore designed to enhance and focus on psychosocial risks within the existing system.
Psychological health on par with physical health
It is widely recognised that as a society we need to get better at managing psychosocial risks and effectively addressing mental health issues and this is particularly important and relevant in the workplace due to the sheer amount of time spent at work each day. Psychological health and wellbeing need to be on an equal par to physical safety and injury.
It is beneficial for organisations to understand, develop, and support their workers by considering aspects such as the way work is organised, along with training and awareness for workers to aid recognition of hazards and implement risk reductions.

Standard Sand for Compressive and Bending Strength Test of Portland Cement Mortar
Steps of Water Purification Process
Detail design of water treatment depends on nature of raw water, desired standard of water quality and capacity of plant or daily water consumption.
General Steps in Purification of Drinking Water Includes:
1. Aeration
2. Storage or Settling
3. Coagulation
4. Filtration
5. Disinfection
1. Aeration
Raw water is first collected in large aeration tank and the water is aerated by bubbling compressed air through perforated pipes. Aeration removes bad odors and CO2. It also removes metal such as iron, manganese by precipitating then as their respective hydroxides.
2. Storage or Settling
Aerated water is then placed in settling tank and stored for 10-14 days. During storage about 90% of suspended solids settle down within 24 hrs and the water becomes clear. Certain heavier toxic chemicals also settle down during storage. Similarly, pathogenic bacteria gradually die and bacterial count decreases by 90% in first in first 5-7 days of storage. During storage organic matter present in water is oxidized by microorganisms. Similarly, NH3 present is oxidized into nitrate by microorganisms during storage.
3. Coagulation
Water from storage tank is then placed in coagulation tank and then some precipitating agents such as alum, lime etc. are added in water and mixed. These precipitating agents form precipitate of Al(OH)3 when dissolved in water. Suspended solids absorbs on the surface of precipitate, so gradually mass of precipitate becomes heavier and finally settle down. This technique is used to remove very light suspended solids that do not settle by themselves during storage. Furthermore, if negatively charged colloidal impurities are present, they are neutralized by Al+++ ions and settle down.
4. Filtration
Partially clarified water is then passed through sand gravity filter which removes 98-99% of microorganisms and other impurities.
Sand gravity water filter:
Sand filter is a rectangular tank in which filter bed is made up to 3 layers.
Top layer: fine sand layer of 1 meter thick
Middle layer: 0.3-0.5 meter thick layer of coarse sand
Bottom layer: 0.3-0.5 meter thick layer of gravel
There is a collection tank at the bottom of the filter bed to collect filtered water. During filtration filter bed soon gets covered with a slimy layer called vital layer. Vital layer consists of thread like algae, diatoms and bacteria. During filtration microorganisms presents in vital layer oxidize organic and other matter present in water. e.g. if NH3 is present, it is oxidized into nitrate. Vital layer also helps in filtration of microbial cells. If water contains unpleasant odor, activated carbon may be placed in filter bed that removes bad odors.
5. Disinfection
The filtered water is finally purified by using disinfectants. e.g. Chlorination. Disinfectant kills pathogenic as well as other microorganism in water. After disinfection water is pumped into overhead tank for subsequent domestic distribution.

Unit of Colour
The colour of a water sample is measured by comparing it visually with a series of master samples containing known quantities of potassium chloroplatinate and cobalt chloride (II).
A unit of true colour (UTC), or a platinum-cobalt unit, refers to the quantity of colour revealed under specified sampling conditions, by a control solution containing 1 mg of platinum per litre.
Turbidity Unit
Turbidity is the optical property of water such that the incident light is diffused and absorbed instead of being transmitted in a straight line through a sample.
Nephelometric turbidity metres measure the intensity of the light diffused at an angle of 90° in relation to the incident light. The apparatus’ readout unit is expressed in nephelometric formazine units (NFU).
Formazine suspensions are used as the main control reference. A formazine suspension produced by the reaction between hydrazine sulphate (50 mg·L–1) and hexamethylene-tetramine (500 mg·L–1) under stringent conditions has a turbidity of 40 NTU.
