TOEFL IBT Writing: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? All university students should be required to take history courses no matter what their field of study is. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.(sample answer)
Most of the students nowadays consider history subject only for specific students who join the history department. I personally believe that this subject should be provided to all students in any field of study as a required course. I feel this way because of a couple of reasons, which I will explore in the following essay.
To begin with, history will help us to know more about the world we are living in. This course will teach how ancient societies developed their systems, governments, identities, technologies, and how they operated and changed through process. As a result, this will help us to have a detailed picture of where we stand today and what we should do for next. For students, especially, it has enormous benefit to know how their field of study evolved and help them to add value to their field of study. Scientists nowadays have created a lot of technologies based on the research that revealed ancient people civilization. Technologies, inventions and so on, that make our daily lives easier are found by studying the civilization of past people. For instance, cameras have been invented by studying how ancient Egyptians have painted on rock or paper. So, history courses have a lot of benefits to know our world and learn what past people have done.
Furthermore, history assists us to understand our identities. To be specific, this course will help to know how one's country's great institutions are formed and how they are operated, what are the challenges they faced and how they were fixed. Learning all these histories not only helps us know more about the country, but also motivates us to contribute to our country in our field of study after graduation. For example, I have graduated in the field of technology, and I am serving my country with great care because I know how people in the past have preserved our country. Similarly, if all students study their history, they will get the chance to know how their country was built and how to continue the trend of supporting their home country. So, this shows that every student should take a history course as a required subject of study.
To sum up, students should take history as a required subject in addition to their regular field of study. This is because studying history helps us to know our world in the past and current and our identities in detail.

Some people advocate death penalty for those who committed violent crimes. Others say that capital punishment is unacceptable in contemporary society. Describe advantages and disadvantages of death penalty and give your opinion.(sample answer)
Capital punishment is a controversial topic, and people often disagree on whether it must be used or not. Some people think it must be utilised in cases of extremely violent crime, whereas others believe such a punishment is no longer acceptable in the current realities. The death penalty can be approved or disapproved depending on factors involving crime prevention, economic benefits or the possibility of wrongful executions.
There are a few obvious benefits to using the death penalty. Firstly, by implementing capital punishment, it is possible to prevent crime. In other words, executions can serve as a moral lesson and frighten potential criminals. Secondly, death penalties can help save money by cutting the costs of prison maintenance, which includes providing convicts with food and water on a daily basis. Saved money can be used for other sectors such as healthcare and education instead. From this perspective, capital punishment is sensible.
Death penalty can also be criticised for its main disadvantage: the risk of wrongful killings. Put simply, there are cases in history when an innocent person was executed because of false accusations. What makes things worse is that there is no recovery from capital punishment when real evidence is available. This is why lifetime sentences are still prioritised, even in the most violent cases, and only 55 countries in the world still retain the death penalty.
In conclusion, there are both advantages and disadvantages to using capital punishment, but in my view, it must be used when reliable evidence is available and in cases of extreme violence. However, if the evidence is doubtful and the crime is not severe enough, alternatives must be chosen instead.

Tips for the Reading and Listening Section đ¨đ˝âđŤ
A student recently inquired about some tips for the Reading and Listening section of the TOEFL test. Here is the answer I provided:
đ READING đ
1ď¸âŁ Make sure you are properly reading the content:
Focus on reading one sentence at a time and gather as much information as you can from its content. It is not about how fast you can read but how well can you comprehend the content you are being shown. In the end, if you have to read the same paragraph multiple times, you'll waste a lot of time.
2ď¸âŁ Learn Vocabulary in Context:
One of the best ways to improve your vocabulary skills is by learning words in context. When reading the passages, pay attention to how words are used in context and try to INFER their meanings.
3ď¸âŁ Focus on the Main Ideas:
The Reading section often contains long and complex passages, but it's important to focus on the main ideas and not get bogged down in details. Make sure you understand the main point of each passage, as this will help you answer the questions more efficiently.
4ď¸âŁ Manage Your Time:
The Reading section of the TOEFL is timed, essentially you have specific minutes you have given per passage; so it's important to manage your time effectively. Divide the time allotted for the Reading section equally among the passages and questions, and try to pace yourself accordingly.
đđť LISTENING đđť
1ď¸âŁ Develop Good Note-Taking Skills:
The Listening section of the TOEFL requires good note-taking skills. When you listen to the talks and lectures, practice taking notes and making sure your notes are ORGANIZED and SIMPLE TO READ. Instead of writing a lot of words, focus on writing down "words" that will help you connect the dots when you read them together.
2ď¸âŁ Concentrate on the major concepts and the story as a whole:
Similar to the Reading section, it's important to focus on the main ideas in the Listening section. Listen for the main points, supporting details, and examples given in the conversations and lectures. Above all, pay attention throughout the entire conversation/lecture and avoid allowing the topic to overwhelm you. If you come across a piece of content that you don't understand, stay cool and keep listening; if you do, you'll catch up with the content.
3ď¸âŁ Pay Attention to changes in the conversation/lecture:
Signal words, such as "however," "therefore," and "in contrast," are frequently employed to show transitions and linkages between ideas. Paying attention to these signal phrases can assist you in comprehending the structure of the conversations and lectures.
4ď¸âŁ Infer the meaning of words using context clues:
Just like in the Reading section, it's important to use context clues to help you understand unfamiliar words or phrases. Listen for cues in conversations and lectures that can help you deduce the meanings of unfamiliar terms.

Writing for an Academic Discussion
đYou have 10 minutes to type your own post that contributes to the discussion. There's no maximum length for your response, but a good response is usually at least 100 words.
đYour opinion should contribute to the discussion. It should be clear and cohesive, and it should be developed and well supported by reasons or examples.
đThe best way to approach a response is to read the discussion carefully and then come up with one or two ideas you would like to contribute to the discussion.
đYou could take some inspiration from one of the other posts.
đWhen you give your opinion, you may refer to one of the other student posts to agree or disagree, but make sure to use your own words and phrases. Don't just copy what the other students have written.
đBefore the test, make sure you understand what the raters are looking for and how each question is scored. Responses in the writing section will each be given an overall score from 0 to 5. For question 2, the writing for an academic discussion task, the raters are looking for three main things-- relevant and clearly developed ideas, variety in the use of language, and a correct use of language.
đFirst, relevant and clearly developed ideas. The raters are looking for ideas that contribute to the discussion and are well supported by reasons and examples. If you just use a lot of words and sentences that are not well connected and do not support each other, or that don't add up to a clear point of view, or if you develop empty ideas, you'll receive a low score.
đSecond, variety in the use of language. The raters are looking for evidence that you can use a variety of structures and vocabulary. The variety should be natural and support your ideas. If you try to use varied structures of vocabulary without a good reason, that will not help you get a high score.
đThe third criterion is a correct use of language. It is important that your use of grammar is strong and consistent, that your word choices are correct and appropriate, and that your spelling, punctuation, and capitalization are correct. Your writing doesn't have to be absolutely perfect to get a top score, but the few small mistakes you may leave behind have to be typical of competent writers writing under timed conditions.
đAnd don't try to create an answer by memorizing sentences or paragraphs on various topics before the test and then trying to relate them to the topic you receive, because the content won't be appropriate, and you'll just receive a low score.

Donât try to write COMPLETE SENTENCES in your notes for TOEFL speaking, then read them out loud for your response. This is a crazy strategy for a number of reasons.
1. Itâs a speaking test, not a âreading out loudâ test. I can always tell when students are reading in their responses. It sounds completely different from when someone is speaking naturally. If teachers can tell when this is happening, the ETS raters and the SpeechRater certainly can too.
2. You donât have time to do this. If youâre focusing on writing whole sentences, youâre likely missing out important information.
3. To get a high score in speaking, you need to demonstrate âautomaticityâ. Reading out loud does not demonstrate this.
4. Itâs much more stressful to approach the speaking questions this way. Again, that makes it much harder to get a high score.
So, practice good note-taking strategies, concentrate on reading + listening + explaining, and develop automaticity in speaking. And get help if you need it - youâll make faster progress.

Is the reading section of the new TOEFL exam much harder than before?
Letâs look at some of the reasons why this could be happening.
1. TIMING
đ˘ In the new TOEFL exam, there are 2 reading passages and youâre allowed 35 minutes to read and answer the questions.
đľ In the old version of the exam, there were 3 passages, and you were allowed 54 minutes to complete them.
Simple arithmetic -> in the new version of TOEFL, you have 30 seconds LESS per passage. Thatâs 1 whole minute less for the entire section. If you are constantly struggling with time, and unable to complete all the questions in the time allowed, this is going to be accentuated in the new exam.
2. WEIGHT PER QUESTION
đ˘ In the new exam, there are 10 questions per passage. 20 questions in total. However, your total score will be out of 22 because the last question is worth 2 points.
đľ In the old version, there were 30 questions in total, with a total score out of 33.
Simple arithmetic -> in the new version of TOEFL, each point you score with a correct response equates to 1.36 scaled points. In the old version, that amount was 0.91.
This means that each point you score in the new version of the exam is worth more. But you lose more points for each incorrect response. In other words, you have LESS ROOM TO MAKE MISTAKES.
If all these numbers are too confusing, here is a summary:
In the new reading section of TOEFL
đ˘ you have less time
đ˘ each question is worth more
đ˘ mistakes count for more
If youâre relying on tips and tricks to get you through reading, then itâs going to be harder to do this in the new version of the exam.
So how can you study for reading now?
đś 1st build your language proficiency. Make sure you have a good academic vocabulary and that you can understand complex grammatical structures.
đ¸ Then understand exam strategy - particularly what each question is asking you to do.
đ¸ Finally, work on timing. You will always struggle with reading unless you can complete all the questions in the allotted time.
But donât make the mistake of working on tips and tricks and timing first. Good English proficiency is the basis of your success in all sections of TOEFL.

TOEFL IBT Writing
Task 1tips
Logically coherent and grammatically cohesive responses score highly.
Connectors are "magic TOEFL speaking words' that connect phrases together to make sentences longer and more cohesive.
So, and, also, not only this, but also, however, and although, even though, one of the reasons why I think this way is because...
đ Think strategically about your responses.
If you start with> I definitely agree that> read the question> and then> One of the reasons why I think this way is because:
đ You are using an opportunity to influence sustained speech and fluency rate and response length.

TOEFL IBT Speaking section, try to use more complex grammar constructions and donât be silent.
1) here the name of the book which I find extremely helpful for myself - Guns, Germs, and Steel Book by Jared Diamond;
2) there is a YouTube channel called Kurz gesagt - In a nutshell. Itâs good for the development of your listening skills. Besides, you can understand difficult scientific concepts when watching videos form that channel. For instance, one video form the channel has helped me understand the formation of Supernova stars. Then, when I was practicing the listening part, this information helped me answer all the questions correctly since the lecture was about the origin of Supernova.
At the end, I wish you, my reader, good luck! Donât be afraid of pushing yourself to the limits.
TOEFL tips are:
1) believe in yourself - this is crucial;
2) become a permanent reader - spend at least 20-30 min per day to read academic English books or news (the Economist, NYT, the New Yourker, etc.)
3) when you have a jog or commute to work listen to academic podcast (History extra podcast, TED talks, Harvard Business Review, etc)
4) develop persistence in studying - I know that itâs not easy to sit and learn many hours in a row from day to day, especially after a hard day at work, yet it is the only way for you to succeed. Make short breaks between practicing to drink a cup of tee or coffee in order not to burn out;
5) write at least 2 essay per day. At the beginning, you can find it difficult to be on time with the essays. However, the more you practice, the better results you show. Read some good essay samples and write useful patterns down. Then, start using those patterns in your essay;
6) donât be upset, if you cannot achieve your score when practicing the test on online platforms. Before I got the desirable result, I had failed a myriad of reading and listening sections. So, keep going!
7) be prepared grammatically - I donât recommend you to take a test if you donât know English at B2 level. Not only do you have to use different complex grammar construction but you also have to use advanced vocabulary in order to get at least 25 points in the writing section (this sentence is one example of an appropriate grammar construction);
8) speak English as much as you can - I understand that it can be difficult to find a person who you can speak to. Yet, you can try to find a speaking buddy in the chat, if you both have the same level of English.
The test day. The first rule is to be relaxed.

Please don't depend on your TOEFL Speaking score from the TPO you get it at hand while practicing. You will not probably get it in the actual TOEFL Speaking test.
Because the automated score you just received only involved the SpeechRater algorithm. No human evaluator listened to your responses during the TPO practice. On the actual exam, your responses are assessed by both human evaluators and the SpeechRater.
A human evaluator can assess your content, topic development and make sure you actually answer the question and that what you say makes sense. The automated TPO report is mainly analyzing your delivery and language use.
The automated TPO score could be slightly higher compared to a calibrated score with both computer and human assessments. You could sound fluent while saying gibberish on the automated TPO, but a human would penalize such gibberish and lower your score.
For the highest scores, you need all 3 elements of topic development, language use, and delivery. 2 of those 3 results in a score of 3, and if all your responses are 3, that results in a 23 out of 30. But if you practice from the TPO , the computer has given you a 26, but the speaking rate could be faster and you have repeated yourself. The other metrics look very high, but there's no way to know what your actual content was and if it was on topic.

đ B1 Level: Expanding Your Horizons đ
Once you've mastered the basics, it's time to take your English skills to the next level. At B1, you'll progressively expand your vocabulary, improve your grammar, and enhance your ability to express yourself with greater fluency. Your focus will shift towards more complex conversational topics, such as expressing opinions, narrating personal experiences, and discussing current affairs. B1 empowers you to communicate more effectively, both in writing and speaking, while still providing room for growth.
đ Tips for B1 Level Students:
1ď¸âŁ Read English books, news articles, or blogs to broaden your vocabulary.
2ď¸âŁ Practice writing longer and more coherent paragraphs.
3ď¸âŁ Expand your range of conversational expressions, phrases, and idioms.
4ď¸âŁ Engage in debates or group discussions to practice expressing your opinions.
5ď¸âŁ Challenge yourself with movies, TV shows, or podcasts in English to improve your listening skills.
Remember, learning a language is a journey, and embracing each level is essential for steady progression. Stay motivated, practice consistently, and never be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. đ
So, which level are you currently at? Let me know in the comments below! And remember, English fluency is just around the corner. Keep up the great work! đđ
