This year’s final night of Mużika Mużika marked the end of a three-year collaboration. Beyond that, the bond built between the studio’s creative director and three lovely women; the stories and the emotions, and the laughter and the words shared between them, was the greatest victory.

For Moira we went for a 70s inspired look, drawing an array of references from Halston, Studio 54 and old Hollywood glamour. For this evening’s finale, the look was put together by the team at our studio using a couture level pure silk and lurex velvet.

For Claire we created a Tudor-inspired look in our signature Chartreuse green, featuring a corset with a slight sweetheart neckline, sculpted hip and stiff A-line skirt, suggestive of a soft armour.

Festival winner Maxine Pace graced the stage in a pure silk gown decorated using subtle wave patterns in gunmetal and charcoal hues.

At the studio we have always thought that a single, solid colour has the ability to eliminate all distractions and drive attention on the wearer, on the person, and on their identity. The monochromatic choices have the ability to crystalise the context, the figures emerge even more clearly, their humanity, the depth of their emotions. Everything looks better with just one colour - especially if it’s somewhere on the spectrum of green, gold, mustard and black.

Luke Azzopardi Studio has designed this season's opera for the National Theatre, Rossini's Armida.

A note on costumes by the studio's Creative Director, Luke Azzopardi:

'When I was asked by the Artistic Director to design Rossini's Armida, I made a deliberate choice to transcend the conventional boundaries of its original time period, opting instead for the enchanting, sensual backdrop of a whimsical contemporary world infused with the subtle provocation of fashion. As a couture designer, it is a tremendous honor for me to lend my artistic sensibilities to the stage at the Manoel Theatre.

In this reimagined rendition of Armida, I've taken a meta-narrative spin, transforming the opera, from a costume point of view, into a captivating exploration of self-awareness within the operatic realm.

Through the lens of couture, the stage becomes a canvas for the intersection of fashion and opera, weaving together an intricate tapestry of visual and auditory storytelling.'

The garments in this collection were conceived through contemplation of Piero della Francesca’s painting, The Nativity, dated to 1470–1475, and Pietru Caxaro's Poem 'il-Kantilena'. The shared notion of these works, crumbling architecture, and the pondering on the early Rennaissance worldview of predestination inspired a thought: fashion elegantly reflects time, adeptly paying homage to the past, yet often struggles to transcend it.
