A few years back, while on expatriation in Maputo, I had the opportunity to live in a beautiful apartment on Friedrich Engels avenue. The view was simply amazing from the 3rd floor!
As days passed by, I could observe the usual joggers and walkers on the promenade. After some time I also started noticing a homeless man, sleeping on the same bench each evening and every morning, picking up what seemed to be a old bed sheet in which he would wrap up all his personal belongings, lifting this huge 'backpack' to his shoulder with a brisk movement and placing it on his back before leaving.
The first time I saw him, I couldn't help myself from thinking of a snail... carrying his home on his back... And I felt sorry and helpless!
I tried to, but could not, imagine what it was like to be homeless and alone?
Ever since that day, I am every night humbly grateful for having a roof over my head, a bed to sleep in and do realise that many don't.
We often take what we have for granted. Shelter, safety, security and health are real gifts of life. Let's make these blessings worth receiving them.
Fill your home with love and kindness;
Stay and keep your loved ones safe and secure;
Take care of your health to better take care of others.

At first I found it scary to venture alone in the forest, and then almost boring... but then I started paying attention to the branches waving at me, the birds singing for me, the wind and sun intertwining to bless me with the ideal temperature, a blissful moment with mother earth!

I’m not ashamed to say that I only learned to swim last year, at the age of 38
 I also need to admit that I have always been scared of water, especially of the sea with all its various species swimming around.

I think that 3 important factors contributed in this process to win over my fear of water and eventually learn to swim:
1. Being aided by adequate equipment, i.e. swimming fins and googles;
2. Receiving, in the first place, the great advice from my dad to gear up; and
3. Surrounding myself with supportive friends to learn from and learn with while having fun.

Which really brings us to Relationships! Without them in our life, we literally stop existing; we would not be heard, seen, acknowledged nor loved. And most of the time, our growth is never complete without the support of one or a few others. This is how powerful relationships are on our wellness wheel, in our world.

In Africa we say Ubuntu which is a meaning for Humanity: “I am because you are”!

This post is dedicated to my family and friends. Can you think of anyone who need to know that they make a difference in your life? Tag them here simply to say ‘Thank you for letting me exist in your world’!

When we were kids, we could not do otherwise than take cold showers
 we did not have hot water! Lol

Since a few years I have gone back to this habit and even if it seems terrifying at first sight, I can tell you it's one of my favourite morning routines.

How do cold showers benefit your health? Well, they help:
1. Improve your circulation and get you going
2. Increase your alertness, clarity, and energy levels
3. Release endorphins (happiness hormones) in your body
4. Improve your metabolism
5. Lose weight
6. Boost your immune system

If you’re still hesitant, be gentle with yourself and try to slowly contrast from warm to cold.

Surprisingly I had a good sleep last night despite a heavy meal! Waking up was tougher than usual though


Do you know the effect of sleep deprivation on your ‘system’?

When you lack sleep, your body is stressed; stress being a feeling of physical or emotional tension.

To respond to the stress (fight-flight mode as it can usually be described), your body releases Cortisol, a steroid hormone which regulates your energy level and Glucagon which helps maintaining or sending glucose (sugar) to your bloodstream.

In normal circumstances these hormones are helpful. But chronic sleep deprivation would result in an elevated levels of these hormones in your system. Consequences over the long run, to name only a few are weight gain, excessive blood sugar, cardiovascular diseases, immune system suppression.

In short, take care of your sleep: take care of your health!

Aerobic exercise often refers to cardio where you can maintain a steady level of activity and body movement at a moderate pace for a period of time.
Anaerobic exercise is a shorter and more intense activity which cannot be sustained for long.
With aerobic activity, your body uses more oxygen and taps into your fats store for energy (e.g. cardio) while for anaerobic activity your oxygen demand is higher than the supply - due to intensity -and you tap into your glucose and glycogen store (e.g. HIIT).
Funnily you would burn more calories during anaerobic exercise; the main reason being that you use your fast-twitch muscle fibers to perform, which means building more muscle mass and speeding up metabolism.
