Vaadhoo | Raa Atoll | Maldives

Vaadhoo is located in Northern part of the country and is the second inhabited island in Raa Atoll. The island reef is one of the largest in the atoll including a deep water lagoon and vast area of shallow water.

Famous for the bioluminescence plankton (Redhan), the spectacular "Sea of Stars" can be experienced in this island yearly.

With clean roads and white sandy beaches, Vaadhoo is one of the most beautiful inhabited islands in the Maldives and its local tourism industry is expected to boom in the upcoming years.

Vaadhoo is located in Northern part of the country and is the second inhabited island in Raa Atoll. The island reef is one of the largest in the atoll including a deep water lagoon and vast area of shallow water. A population of 626 people living in the island is supported mainly from fishing and agriculture. Administered by the Council of Vaadhoo, education, health, welfare and other municipal services are provided to enhance the betterment of the population, in the intention to bring investments and development to the Vaadhoo economy.

The “SEA OF STARS” is a beautiful phenomenon that occurs during late summer in the reefs/ beaches of the Maldives, caused by bioluminescent phytoplankton called Lingulodinium polyedrum. The water here is filled with this plankton, and the movement of the waves causes it to glow, creating an incredible shimmering effect that looks like the sea is full of stars.

Know Before You Go:

Vaadhoo Island in the Raa Atoll is the most well-known spot for viewing the plankton, though it is dependent on conditions and may occur on any of the islands. It is best to do more research if you are interested.
