The Digital Malawi Project (DIGMAP) continues to create job opportunities and provide free internet connectivity services to Malawians in the country through the Public Institutions Connectivity Initiative.

The Project Manager for Bengol.Net Limited, Dixon Daelo, revealed this on Friday in Blantyre when the Secretary for Information and Digitalization, Baldwin Chiyamwaka visited the National Library, a beneficiary of the Initiative.

The Public Institutions Connectivity Initiative aims to provide reliable internet connectivity through high-speed optic fiber cables to 530 public sites over the next 9 years under a Public Private Partnership Arrangement.

Daelo said that Bengol.Net Limited, one of the contractors, has created over 400 job opportunities for Malawians across the 18 districts.

“As Bengol.Net Limited, we have recruited over 400 members of staff from 18 different districts where we are connecting 329 public institutions," he said.

In his remarks, Chiyamwaka attributed the significant job creation to the government’s commitment to improving the living standards of Malawians.

He explained that internet connectivity is segmented into three networks: BOMA for all civil servants, NZIKA for all users, and GUEST for all visitors.

“We are providing a network called NZIKA domain, which allows all users to access online government services. The BOMA Network, for the staff in the library, allows them to access free internet, the new government email system, and other applications. This will enhance government service delivery to its employees and citizens in general,” Chiyamwaka elaborated.

Chiyamwaka further expressed the Ministry's satisfaction with the DIGAMP's progress.

He stated: “As a ministry responsible for digitalization, we are happy that through this DIGMAP, we have been able to give access to the internet to different public institutions including libraries.”

Martha Gada, a librarian at the National Library, expressed gratitude to the government for the internet facility at the institution, noting that it has boosted their service delivery and increased their user base.

So far, DIGMAP has connected 500 public sites, and all are operational.

The Ministry of Information and Digitalization (MoID) has emphasized the critical role of the Malawi Research and Education Network (MAREN) in enhancing the quality of education in the country.

The Ministry in partnership with the Private Public Partnership Commission (PPPC) provided financial support and bandwidth to MAREN under the Digital Malawi Project (DIGMAP) to enhance its service delivery to higher learning and research institutions.

Speaking on Friday during a visit to the Malawi University of Business and Applied (MUBAS), a beneficiary of MAREN, Secretary for Information and Digitalization, Baldwin Chiyamwaka said the government has enhanced internet connectivity in higher learning institutions to boost learning, teaching, and research standards.

He noted that students have the flexibility to access the internet and innovative online education content across their campuses, a significant improvement from the past when internet access was limited to specific areas such as computer laboratories and libraries.

“Through MAREN, we have installed internet access points in 84 institutions of higher learning including all public universities in Malawi to enable particularly students to access the internet and innovative online education content at their convenience which was not the case in the past,” Chiyamwaka stated.

He further stressed the importance of internet access for universities’ Open Distance Learning (ODL) Programs, noting that it has greatly enhanced students' experiences and performances.

In his remarks, the Network and Infrastructure Officer for MAREN, Alexious Chipalamwazani said the project benefits over 100,000 students, far surpassing the initial target of 15,000.

However, he expressed concern over the vandalism of fiber cables which disrupts service delivery to higher learning and research institutions.

Anthony Ziba, Head of ICT at MUBAS, disclosed that the institution is benefiting from the project through advanced internet connectivity and extension of the network, increased bandwidth, and enhanced value-added services.

The MAREN project has established widespread access points across the MUBAS campus, benefiting students, faculty members, and researchers.

Secretary for Information and Digitalization, Baldwin Chiyamwaka has commended the Public Private Partnership Commission (PPPC) for empowering the youth and women with digital and entrepreneurship skills in the country under the ‘Luntha ndi Chuma’ Digital Skills Development and Innovation Training Program.

The ‘Luntha ndi Chuma’ Program is an initiative that is being implemented by the Commission under the Digital Malawi Project (DIGMAP) with funding from the World Bank through grants to technology (tech) hubs.

Speaking yesterday during a visit to Rydberg Starck Limited, one of the tech hubs under the program, Chiyamwaka described fostering digital skills and innovation as a catalyst for transforming not only individual lives but also the economy of the entire country through digitalization.

“We realize that digitalization has a huge impact on changing the economy of this country but also our lives. One way to achieve this is by bringing innovation to digitalization, he said.

He emphasized the importance of adopting and utilizing digital skills and innovation by the government, private sector, and civil society.

Chiyamwaka highlighted that the youth-driven tech hub is one of the success stories of the DIGMAP, providing digital solutions, and imparting digital and entrepreneurship skills to the youth and women in the country.

Project Manager for DIGMAP, Chimwemwe Matemba reiterated the project’s commitment to bridging the digital gap, stimulating economic growth, job creation, and entrepreneurship among Malawi’s youth and women.

He emphasized the crucial role of digital literacy in today’s world and its alignment with Malawi's developmental goals, including the Malawi 2063 Agenda.

"One of the challenges we are facing globally is youth unemployment. One of the ways to address this problem is by using modern technologies, such as the internet, to create adequate income-generating opportunities for our youths," remarked Matemba.

He lauded the Rydberg Starck Limited for their proficient utilization of a US$250,000 grant from the DIGMAP which has helped to train over 1500 youths and women in the country.

Rydberg Starck Limited Team Leader Yusuf Chimole expressed gratitude to the government for its support, saying it has been instrumental in the establishment of the hub.

Secretary for Information and Digitalization, Baldwin Chiyamwaka, has cited the Digital Malawi Project (DIGMAP) as key to realizing the digital transformation outlined in the Malawi 2063 Vision.

The Ministry of Information and Digitalization (MoID) in collaboration with the Private Public Partnership Commission (PPPC) is implementing the project with funding from the World Bank to reshape the digital landscape of Malawi’s economy, society, and government.

Speaking yesterday during a visit to the PPPC, Chiyamwaka emphasized the significance of the project, stating that its components will significantly influence the digital transformation of the country's economy.

He affirmed that the project aligns with the Malawi 2063 Vision and broader national initiatives.

"Our programs in the ministry, including this one funded by the World Bank, are designed within the framework of the Malawi 2063 Vision. These milestones are crucial steps towards realizing the Vision," he said.

PPPC Director Project Development and Planning Charlie Msusa attributed the achievements of DIGMAP to the Government's commitment to digitalizing Malawi and creating an enabling environment for the country’s economy.

He said: “As the implementing agency, we are fulfilling the government's desire to digitalize Government services covering all sectors and ensuring that people benefit from the international digital opportunities.”

Project Manager for DIGMAP, Chimwemwe Matemba, emphasized the project's scope and activities, which are critical in addressing the digital gap in Malawi.

The scope includes Digital Ecosystems which helped MACRA for an improved regulatory environment and the offering of 21st Century skills to our youth and women for purposes of enabling them to benefit from the internet economy.

He disclosed that the project has successfully achieved its objectives and targets.

"DIGMAP is the project that started to lay the foundation for the digitalization of the public sector in the country. Despite this project being successful, there is a need for further investment in the ICT space," he said.

Some of the key project's achievements include drafting and finalizing the Data Protection (DP) Bill, currently enacted as the DP Act; training and incubation of over 19,000 youths, women, and the elderly in digital skills, mass ICT literacy, and entrepreneurship through grants 10 tech hubs; connecting over 500 public institutions; and constructing a national data center in Lilongwe.

“The Luntha ndi Chuma initiative is aimed at empowering youth and women with digital and entrepreneurship skills. The idea is if they have these skills then they should be able to either get a job or be self-employed,” said Kabambe.

He lauded the Ntha Foundation for their proficient utilization of a US$250,000 grant from the DIGMAP which has helped in training over 670 youths in the country.

On her part, Ntha Foundation founder Nthanda Manduwi expressed her gratitude to the government through the PPPC for the donation, emphasizing its potential to enhance its operational capabilities and further its impact within the community.
