We're thrilled to announce that the MACRA Muuni Fund has emerged as the top winner in the Ecosystem Practice category at the 2024 Global Innovation Forum (GIF-24) held in Valletta, Malta from October 28-30!

Hosted by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), this prestigious competition celebrates transformative projects shaping the digital entrepreneurship ecosystem. The “Pitch Your Project” competition spotlighted initiatives that empower countries, communities, institutions, and individuals to foster thriving digital ecosystems.

Visionary entrepreneurs, SMEs, policymakers, and ecosystem builders from across the globe pitched their projects, benefiting from valuable feedback and global recognition. Out of 65 submissions, only 14 were selected to pitch live at GIF-24, with six finalists chosen to compete for top on a global stage with a non-monetary award. The expert jury, comprised of ITU's Digital Innovation Board members, selected winners for each category based on impact and innovation.

In the Ecosystem Practice category, the MACRA Muuni Fund proudly secured first place, marking a significant achievement for Malawi's innovation landscape!

Join us at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences for day 2 of the Unleash Hackathon, hosted by UNLEASH and the MUBAS Innovation Hub.

This afternoon, teams of young Malawians are pitching their innovative ideas to a judging panel, focusing on solutions to tackle youth unemployment. UNLEASH Hacks, led by a dynamic team of young people, brings together peers to address this critical issue.

The hackathon, which kicked off yesterday, October 4, 2024, saw teams progress through the three key stages: problem framing, ideation, and prototyping.

The team of Judges include representatives from OPC, MUBAS, Amaryllis Hotels and Muuni Fund.

We’re excited to see which team will present the winning solution!

DAY 1 of the UNLEASH HACKATHON

The Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences is hosting the "UNLEASH HACKATHON" through their innovation hub, aiming to tap into the creativity of young minds to develop technological solutions that contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This event is scheduled to take place for 2 days, from the 4th of October 2024 to the 5th of October 2024.

The hackathon is centred around three key Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).

"Bridging the Digital Divide: Are Malawian Youth Ready to Lead in the Digital Revolution Towards MW 2063?"

This is the pressing question that is being explored at the 3rd session of the National Youth Conversations hosted by the National Youth Council of Malawi(NYCOM), at the Grand Palace Hotel, Mzuzu.

This event was graced with the presence of Board Chairperson (NYCOM), Mr. Duncan Chiyani; Guest Speaker, Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority - MACRA Director General, Daud Suleman; the Executive Director of NCYOM; Director General of the National Commission of Science and Technology, Gift Kadzamira; Director of Science, Technology and Innovation from the Ministry of Education, Prof. Chomora Mikeka, and the Executive Director TEVETA, Elwin Sichiola.

In his keynote address, the Director General of MACRA, Daud Suleman emphasized that youth are the early adopters and trendsetters of digitalization, playing a pivotal role in shaping our nation’s future.

As we push towards MW 2063, the Director General highlighted that digitalization is inseparable from innovation and entrepreneurship—areas where young people are already leading the charge.

The Director General further encouraged the youth to be acquainted with the various cyber laws such as the Electronic Transactions and Cybersecurity Act 2016 to ensure the digital space is used within the correct limitations.

Congratulations to Muuni Fund Innovator, John Daka, for earning 3rd place in the 2024 MUBAS Student Innovation Awards, an honor celebrated during the 2nd edition of the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences(MUBAS) Research and Innovation Week.

John’s outstanding achievement stems from his development of the Vendor Registry System, a cutting-edge platform designed to streamline the registration and monitoring of vendors in Zomba's flea markets. This innovative solution, created specifically for Zomba City Council, is a testament to his dedication and innovative thinking.

We also extend our appreciation to Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) for its continued efforts in fostering student participation in innovative projects. Their commitment to encouraging young minds to develop impactful solutions is invaluable to the future of our communities.

The Third National Youth Conversations Series is underway in Mzuzu where youth across the country are expected to, among others, discuss issues surrounding bridging the digital divide.
