Malawi minister erroneously posts vague status; Apologizes for wreaking havoc

Malawi’s homeland security minister Keneth Zikhale Ng’oma took Malawians aback on Wednesday night after posting a striking WhatsApp status which alleged that Former ICT director in the office president and Cabinet Antony Bendula and Director of information Technology- Department of E-government in the ministry of information Limbani Magomero were responsible for the mess at the immigration department.

The status which was deleted a few minutes after the pole, seemed to be a tip off to the minister.

‘‘Just arrest Antony Bendulo and Director of ICT E- government and there team are the ones that tampered with the immigration system at MTL data Centre. Wishing you all the best honorable Minister Kenneth Zikhale Ng’oma as you sort out the mess,’’ reads the status.

But Zikhale Ng’oma is reportedly to have justified the status, saying he wanted to forward it to a certain WhatsApp group after he got it from unknown person.

This comes barely days after the minister announced that 90 percent the data which was tampered with has been recovered.

During Question Time to the President in Parliament last Wednesday, the President said the Immigration system had been hacked by “digital mercenaries” and directed Immigration Department to find alternatives to resume passport printing within three weeks.

He said the purported “digital mercenaries” were demanding ransom from the government, but stressed that no payment will be made.

The President described the hacking as a serious national security breach and said Malawi was not the first in the modern world to be a target of such cyber-attacks. However, he assured the House that “decisive steps to regain control of the situation” have been undertaken.

Lilongwe City Council In Operation Kololani; Slashes Maize In Illegal Fields

Lilongwe City Council (LCC) authorities have come under fire for slashing maize crops planted in prohibited places within the city.

Enforcement Division Unit for the council conducted the maize crop slashing exercise on Tuesday and Wednesday.

A snap check by The Word at one of the maize fields we found farmers with their faces cast down with sympathizers describing the move as “barbaric”.

Reacting to the development, a cross section of Malawians on social media platforms such as Facebook and Whatsapp described the maize slashing exercise by the Lilongwe City Council as “witchcraft and inhuman”.

One of the social media users, Rodrick Phillipo said: “This is stupidity! Inde the idea is to have the individuals feel the pinch so that they never repeat the act, but the slashing of a matured crop is not at all a brilliant idea.”

Another comment on LCC page by Willan Kumwenda reads: “But why did all parties wait all long to this devastating moment? That’s almost killing someone much as we understand they have been stubborn”.

Amos Qanda commented: “The timing is wrong. You should have done this at an early stage when the land had just been cultivated. You can’t wait till the crop has reached this stage to take your action.”

According to Council’s Enforcement Division, Officer- In Charge Inspector Allan Domingo, his team slashed over 10 maize fields planted against the Provision of Physical Planning Act of 2018.

The Provision stipulates that “it is illegal to use undeveloped plots, open spaces and road reserves as agricultural gardens for cultivation of various crops including maize within the City of Lilongwe.”

Meanwhile, LCC has appealed to the public to comply with Lilongwe City Council’s bylaws to avoid any inconveniencesLilongwe City Council (LCC) authorities have come under fire for slashing maize crops planted in prohibited places within the city.

Chakwera Responds To Bishops Letter With Three Paragraphs; In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit

Minister of Information who is also the government Spokesperson Moses Kunkuyu says government has received a pastor letter issued by the Episcopal Conference of Malawi today with appreciation and determination to make use of wisdom that has been offered.

Kunkuyu: We will make use of wisdom shared
In an interview minutes ago, the minister added that government will continue utilizing engagements with the clergy on matters affecting the country.

“We are not going to engage them in item-by-item response, but instead we will not get tired of utilizing the engagement that we do have with the clergy from time to time”, he said.

Catholic bishops have today issued a pastoral letter titled The Sad Story of Malawi in which they have taken a swipe at the government executive, the legislature and the judiciary for failure to deliver public services for the poor.

The bishops have bluntly accused the Tonse administration of rampant corruption and outright failure to fulfil its campaign promises.

In their letter, however, the bishops have applauded efforts by the Malawi Law Society to enforce justice even where the ministry of justice and the judiciary have not impressed.

The bishops have decried government’s continued engagement of corruption suspects in multimillion dollar public business contracts, an apparent reference to Zunneth Sattar.

The letter has also discussed leadership problems in Malawi. They say, as Episcopal Conference in Malawi the bishops have physically met and discussed issues with President Lazarus Chakwera to no avail.

INCOMPETENT LEADERSHIP; Catholic bishops tear apart Chakwera, Tonse Alliance lieutenants

The Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM), a body that comprises of all Bishops in Malawi says President Dr Lazarus Chakwera and his Tonse Alliance lieutenants have plunged the Malawians into deep poverty.

‘During this year. We will clock four years of the Tonse Alliance Government’. If Malawians ask themselves, “AM I BETTER OFF NOW THAN I WAS FOUR YEARS AGO? the resounding answer for the vast majority of Malawians is an emphatic- NO.

It is clear that that the story of that Tonse Alliance Government told us before being elected into government is not being realised.

MALAWIANS ARE AT BAGAMOYO IN TANZANIA… LAND OF SLAVERY

Malawians were promised to go to Canaan but instead they have been sent to Bagamoyo.. Bagamoyo is a city on the east cost of Tanzania which when a slave arrives there he or she lost all hope of being free again.

“Instead of reaching the Promised Land of prosperity we are bogged down in the same land we wanted to leave, namely the land of hunger, disease, poverty, corruption and a like. Malawians feel that there is no one in the current government who cares about them or who us able to improve their situation.,” bishops cry for their people.

The Bishops have also taken a swipe at the Judiciary calling it most corrupt organization that has allowed itself to dance to money than preserving its integrity by defending the poor.

“Even the Judiciary appears to have abandoned its integrity and has embroiled itself in corruption and partisanship. The prices of judges and magistrates is no longer taboo; its an open secret that some lawyers thrive by bribing judges and magistrates to defeat the poor ends of justice. Some judges and magistrates are accountable to no one. They take years to hear cases gets the Judiciary does nothing to discipline them. Instead they are rewarded with promotion,” fume bishops.

OUR DAILY BREAD: But we prayed to our God and posted a guard day and night to meet this threat.
Nehemiah 4:9

The book of Nehemiah recounts how the Israelites rebuilt Jerusalem’s broken walls. When locals set out to “stir up trouble,” threatening them with violence, the Israelites “prayed to God and posted a guard”. God gave them victory.

This miraculous answer to prayer isn’t a formula for our own protection, but it’s a reminder that opposition to God’s work will come and must be fought with the weapon of prayer. “Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome,” Nehemiah told the Israelites. He can even set violent hearts free. All is well.

Malawi’s investigative Journalists live in fear as targeted arrests escalate

…..Platform for investigative Journalism boss goes into hiding

Malawian investigative journalist is on the run following an alleged launch of massive manhunt by the country’s security agencies, Malawi defense force (MDF) and Malawi police service (MPS), respectively.

Reports indicate that the two agencies have issued an order to have investigative journalist, Gregory Gondwe of the platform for investigative journalism (PIJ) 'brought in for ‘a chat’ over an investigative piece that unearthed a scary truth that Malawi government is still dealing with UK based business person Zunneth Sattar on contractual agreement.

On Monday the publication carried a story titled 'Chakwera still in bed with Zuneth Sattar' which exposes how the current regime unprocedurally paid Sattar's Malachite FTZ a sum of $4.9 million out of $ 19.9 million contract money.

The $ 19 . 9 million deal with a reference number MDF/DOL armoured personal carriers 1/21/ is a continuation of a contract between Sattar and MDF for the supply of 32 armoured personnel Carriers.

Posting on his page on Thursday Gondwe confirmed having received numerous death threats soon after publishing the story.

He writes; ‘’n the wake of my second exposé concerning Zuneth Sattar and the Malawi Defence Force (MDF), I find myself in a perilous situation.’’

‘‘Military sources, the same ones who urged me to shed light on the happenings within the army, have now advised me to go into hiding. This isn't just about legal threats, which I was prepared to face head-on.Yesterday, top government officials confirmed that the MDF intended to ‘arrest’ me for allegedly “endangering state security’—a vague and ominous accusation.’’

Both MDF spokesperson Emmanuel Mlelemba and National Police publicist Peter Kalaya were not available for a comment.

But in a statement dated February 1, 2024 Media institute of southern Africa Malawi Chapter (MISA Malawi) says it condemns the incident in strongest terms as it limits journalists from practicing freely.

‘’We would like to remind government bodies and all citizens that threats on journalists are retrogressive and a threat to democracy.
We believe that if MDF or any other concerned parties have an issue with the media, they should use proper channels to raise such issues, but military interrogations and threats are not among those channels, the statement says in part.

The development has compelled civil society organizations to criticize government's taste of press freedom.

Human rights defenders coalition deputy chairperson Michael Kaiyatsa said tampering with the press is a true manifestation of uncivilized state.

The contract is despite a suspension of all contracts between Malawi government and Zunneth Sattar; including the Malachite contract.

The Attorney general Thabo chakaka Nyirenda is also on record as having announced that government has cancelled all contracts linked to Sattar a month after the ACB's restriction.

Government Sins Haunting Poor Malawians

Tax payers will yet again be spanned following the Industrial Relations Court’s ordered that the Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (Admarc) should pay compensation to its 3282 former employees for unfair dismissal.

These are the employees that were fired in January 2022 following the order from then Minister of Agriculture, Lobin Lowe.

According to Nation Online, the court will later make an assessment of how much the former Admarc employees will get.

On September 1, 2022, former Agriculture Minister Lowe closed Admarc due to what he described as high levels of corruption, theft and professional negligence.

ADMAR was formed in Malawi in 1971 as a government-owned corporation or parastatal to promote the Malawian economy by increasing the volume and quality of its agricultural exports, to develop new foreign markets for the consumption of Malawian agricultural produce and to support Malawi’s farmers.

It was the successor of a number of separate marketing boards of the colonial-era and early post-colonial times, whose functions were as much about controlling African smallholders or generating government revenues as in promoting agricultural development.

It never rains but pours for Malawi president Lazarus Chakwera. Barley days after being stoned in Blantyre, his red carpet has gone missing ahead of the red tar event.

Information reaching this publication indicates that unknown thieves have stolen a red carpet used by Chakwera during public functions.

According to information at hand, the carpet has been stolen together with a tent at night along Zalewa- Mwanza road as the items were being moved to Mwanza where President Lazarus Chakwera has a public event tomorrow, Friday.

The law enforcers have since launched manhunt for the said suspected thieves.

‘Ironist’ Chakwera Fails To Walk The Talk; Off To DRC Despite A Ban On Foreign Trips

Malawi president Lazarus Chakwera waited for two month before he could break his own stated promise to stay without catching a flight until the fisical year ends.

Chakwera will on Friday fly Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for or the inauguration of that country’s re-elected President, Felix Tshisekedi Tshilombo, a statement form the ministry of foreign affairs states.

It says Chakwera will depart for Kinshasa, DRC through Chileka International Airport in Blantyre and will return on Sunday, 21 through the same airport.

‘‘President Chakwera will also hold “urgent in-person talks” with Tshilombo on security matters,’’ says the statement in part.

In November last year, Chakwera suspended all international travel for himself and his government in a bid to save money.

In a televised address, Chakwera said the measures would remain in place until the end of the financial year in March 2024.

“I am imposing a freeze on all public funded international trips for public officers at all levels including myself until the end of financial year in March, “Chakwera, a former evangelical preacher was quoted.

The decision was announced after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved a $175 million loan to the small southern African country.

Malawi is battling an economic crisis that has led to fuel shortages, inflated food prices, and a shortage of foreign exchange.

OUR DAILY BREAD; Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.”
John 21:22.

In John 21, we see a human tendency illustrated among the disciples.
Jesus had just restored Peter after he had denied Him three times. Now Jesus said to Peter, “Follow me!” —a simple but painful command.

Jesus explained that Peter would follow Him to the death. Peter barely had time to comprehend Jesus’ words before he asked about the disciple behind them: “What about him?”.
Jesus replied,
“If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?”

Then He said,
“You must follow me”.

How often we are like Peter! We wonder about the faith journeys of others and not what God is doing with us.

Late in his life, when the death Jesus foretold in John 21 was much closer, Peter elaborated on Christ’s simple command:

“As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do”. 1 Peter 1:14–15.

That is enough to keep each of us focused on Jesus and not on those around us. All is well.

OUR Daily Bread : To everything, there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven:
Ecclesiastes 3:1

Have you ever taken a moment to notice the beauty in the change of seasons? Think about it. With each season, there is something to appreciate and celebrate.

Each year, nature shows us how and why change is necessary. So why are we so reluctant to face and accept it? When you think about it, you realize that all of nature’s changes depend on God.

Change is inevitable. It’s unavoidable. It brings about the unexpected things we didn't plan for. Whether good or bad, it comes with something new. It pushes us out of our comfort zone. It forces us to adjust to circumstances we may or may not have been ready for.

God is aware of all that goes on in our lives. He creates the plans, and He creates the changes. Shifts in life are a part of His plan. Whether we like it or not, we all know God’s plans are always best. All is well.

TB Joshua ‘r**ed, tortured’ worshipers- BBC

By Charlie Northcott and Helen Spooner, BBC Africa Eye

Evidence of widespread abuse and torture by the founder of one of the world’s biggest Christian evangelical churches has been uncovered by the BBC.

Dozens of ex-Synagogue Church of all Nations members – five British – allege atrocities, including r**e and forced abortions, by Nigeria’s late TB Joshua.

The allegations of abuse in a secretive Lagos compound span almost 20 years.

The Synagogue Church of All Nations did not respond to the allegations but said previous claims have been unfounded.

TB Joshua, who died in 2021, was a charismatic and hugely successful preacher and televangelist who had an immense global following.

The BBC’s findings over a two-year investigation include:

Dozens of eyewitness accounts of physical violence or torture carried out by Joshua, including instances of child abuse and people being whipped and chained
Numerous women who say they were sexually assaulted by Joshua, with a number claiming they were repeatedly r**ed for years inside the compound
Multiple allegations of forced abortions inside the church following the alleged r**es by Joshua, including one woman who says she had five terminations
Multiple first-hand accounts detailing how Joshua faked his “miracle healings”, which were broadcast to millions of people around the world
One of the victims, a British woman, called Rae, was 21 years old when she abandoned her degree at Brighton University in 2002 and was recruited into the church. She spent the next 12 years as one of Joshua’s so-called “disciples” inside his maze-like concrete compound in Lagos.

“We all thought we were in heaven, but we were in hell, and in hell terrible things happen,” she told the BBC.

Rae says she was sexually assaulted by Joshua and subjected to a form of solitary confinement for two years. The abuse was so severe, she says she attempted su***de multiple times inside the compound.Conti.

OUR DAILY BREAD : The sun also rises, and the sun goes down,
And hastens to the place where it arose.
Ecclesiastes 1:5

In Ecclesiastes, the writer refers to himself as “the Teacher”. He observes,

“Everything is meaningless” verse 2
and asks,

“What do people gain from all their labors?”. Verse 3

He saw how the sun rises and sets, the wind blows to and fro, the rivers flow endlessly into a never satisfied sea.
Ultimately, all is forgotten.

Ecclesiastes confronts us with the stark futility of living for this life only. However, the writer weaves bright hints of the divine into his book.
There is permanence and real hope.

Ecclesiastes shows us as we truly are, but it also shows God as He is. “Everything God does will endure forever,” (verse 14), and therein lies our great hope.
For God has given us the gift of His Son, Jesus.

Apart from God, we are adrift in an endless, never satisfied sea. Through His risen Son, Jesus, we are reconciled to Him, and we discover our meaning, value, and purpose. All is well.
