Some Amazing Facts about Lake Malawi 🇲🇼

1. The lake is the 2nd deepest lake in Africa, and the 6th in the World (by maximum depth) and has a mean depth of 264 meters and a maximum depth of 706 meters

2. The Lake is the 2nd largest by water volume in Africa, and 5th globally (just after Capsian Sea, Baikal, Tanganyika and Superior)

3. The lake’s water volume is estimated as 8,400 cubic kilometres, and is about 3.5 times the volume of water in Lake Victoria

4. For context, this water can sustain the entire of Africa for 38 years (assuming the current annual freshwater water withdrawal)

5. By area, the lake has surface area of 29,000 Square kilometres (nearly the size of Lesotho 🇱🇸) and ranks 3rd in Africa and 9th Globally

6. At its maximum length, the lake is around 580 KMs long, making it the 9th longest lake globally, and 3rd in the continent

7. The freshwater lake occupies a 5th of Malawi's surface area, and runs from the Northern Region of the country to the Southern Region

8. The water is usually exceptionally clear for a freshwater lake, with visibility often extending farther than 30m

9. The Lake is a meromictic lake, meaning that its water layers do not mix

10. In 2019, Martin Hobbs from South Africa, became the first person to swim the full length of the lake in 54 days, as well as setting the world record for longest solo swim in a lake.
