I just sold the commercial and advertising license for a photograph I took when I visited the village of San Lucas Tolliman, Guatemala. It was sold to the Archive of the Indigenous Languages of Latin America at the University of Texas in Austin. As an amatuer photographer this is a big deal for me. I guess this means I'm no longer an amatuer photographer but now a professional, eh? 😁

So these will be matching pieces. Cody will make a beveled edge wood border on the table and I'm doing all of the fill in mosaics on both with the colors of Mexico. Green, White, (mostly white), and Red.

It's gonna be gorge when I've finished the mosaic on the outside. I will apply luminescent tile to the cross so it emits light when it's dark. Cody connected the electrical uplighting inside the pedestal to shine through the glass that he also installed along with an easy access on and off switch in the back.

This amazing fountain / weeping wall was designed and built by me, Mosaic artist Mike Juarez along with my partner, Mike Cody otherwise known as, Mike Squared Mosaic, based in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. The tile is handmade, hand painted, and high fired by local Yucatecan artisans and mainly used for flooring in Merida's many historic Spanish Colonial homes. We took the process a few steps further and created the weeping wall you see here. In order to make the cascading water sounds more prominent we stacked and adhered the tile into different levels on the wall. The protruding tile act like funnels and creates ledges which in return, intensify the sound. This also increases the ability to see the droplets and splashing more clearly. In this water feature we made more than the usual water just flowing down a flat surface like most weeping walls do. If you like what you see then put a "Like" and subscribe to our channel. So Mike Cody and I built this way back when. At that time we were calling ourselves, MountainBean Mosaics. Real fossils, tile, and river rock. Enjoy and don't ask me why I thought it was a good idea to turn the video camera sideways at the end. No clue.

Our Story

Artist's Statement:
Mosaic: art consisting of a design made from pieces of......... just about anything!
Mike Squared Mosaics are Mike Juarez and Mike Cody.
We build mosaics that instill a positive vibe. Created to fill a void. Created to lure, intrigue, and inspire. Art that is timeless. We make Mosaics that transcend us anywhere than where we are at that moment. They were made to send a beautiful message to one person or the masses. Our work has been compared to turn of the twentieth century Spanish Mosaic artist and architect, Antonio Gaudi, but with a twist. Our Mosaics represent the twenty first century. Our Mosaics are sometimes created on existing structures but we have also built platforms and base structures from scratch. We have constructed Mosaic benches and bench seating areas, Mosaic fire pits, Mosaic walls and murals, Mosaic obelisks, and of course water features including Mosaic fountains and weeping walls. In addition to our construction skills we also mold, high fire, and glaze our own special tile. Glow in the dark pieces, birds, insects, fish, leaves, flowers, human faces, and more. From a distance, or up close and personal, our work is visual eye candy. We introduce various textures to our murals. Children and the visually impaired love the accessibility of our work. They love the feel of the finishes, the textures, the shapes, the glass, and the fluidity of the mural as a whole. Fascination is an understatement.
We at Mike Squared Mosaics have the skills to complete the construction processes and the knowledge that comes from years of trial and error along with the inspiration to create something really special. Remember too, that our Mosaics make great photo-op backdrops for visitors and locals alike. Participation, creation, and reaction. View our Mosaics as portals to a world of endless possibilities.

Community and Client Participation:
As a community outreach, we invite the locals to participate in our projects. We have meet and greets where the locals can contribute pieces that have meaning via their own story or the theme of the project. Each donation is evaluated for durability. Some pieces have been found at thrift stores. The contributions can also be handmade. We have in the past received handmade tiles from area elementary and junior high school students. Tile made during art class or as extra-curricular activities. One local request was to have a pet dog’s portrait applied to a tile which was then placed into the mural. One person donated tiles she bought on her travels. Some pieces could be culturally in tune with the area. Maybe it’s a piece about the local flavor. Some may have environmental significance, fossils, gems, or seashells. If it creates a sense of community and diversity to the project, we happily accept it.
