The Antique Toy Museum Mexico (Museo del Juguete Antiguo México) exhibits a collection composed by 55 thousand toys in
display, being only the five percent of the entire archive which was acquired by Mr. Roberto Shimizu Kaneko, who since was a little kid dedicated great part of his childhood
to collect many different kind of bizarre and quirky toys in flee markets, bazaars and
antique stores. This
cultural project main goal is to spread the word about children
culture through a playful environment. Also is very important for us to keep and share
this unique archaeology treasures as a remarkable group of objects that has been part of
us in different ages, being considered as a cultural world heritage that includes several
ancient and modern pieces related with human history. The museum features six exhibition rooms and a temporary exhibition hall in three
buildings. All of our spaces are filled with amazing toys, children treasures and a lot of
popular elements of our diary life, which persuades children and adults with their charm. Enhancing the connection between different generations. The exhibited collection
consists of 55,000 toys of more than one million pieces kept in storage, it has been a
huge effort to keep all this toys in perfect conditions and we have been struggling a lot in
the conservation process in our storage warehouses, being extremely careful with the
preservation conditions. The collection keeps growing everyday, and it has been difficult
to mantain it in good conditions, because since the collection started it has been funded
privately with our own resources, making an enormous effort to keep the archive alive
and opened without any support of local authorities and cultural institutions. We want to
keep this world heritage as an independent museum to continue this meaningful effort
and collaborate with international institutions to provide a better service for the visitors,
and continue with a cultural expansion by sharing our collection all over the world. For us
is very important to keep generating a special connection with the people by helping
them to comprehend the important values of all the stages of human life. During this
seven years that the museum has been open to the public, all the efforts and actions to
preserve and share this modern archaeology has been handled by Shimizu`s family who
in the recent years have invested with a lot of sacrifice this independent project without
any foreign aid. enjoying stage of human life. It is important to consider this heritage an elemental trigger to
comprehend the connection between all generations. In this modern world, in which
communication is based on digital platforms and non-personal relationships. This analog
pieces will help us ponder about the importance of personal interactions between human
beings. For us is very important to regenerate the essence of human interaction, by sharing a
playful environment which involves a rich number of memories and experiences of the
people to produce a meaningful social coexistence in the community. For that reason, the
museum possess an important connection with the people, generating an open cultural
spot for familiar activities in which everyone can enjoy quality time together. We are
working to bring a better image for our beloved Doctores district. Nowadays the Antique
Toy Museum of Mexico is growing as a familiar site, which provides a healthy environment
and important bonds between kids, youths and adults. As a contemporary art and archaeology spot, the museum also takes an important value to
provide art and culture with strong connections with the society, taking away the traditional
gallery method which transforms the art diffusion into a privileged activity with elitist access
for the people, allowing us to have a remarkable engagement with the society. Always
offering culture in a natural way and very near to the people. Showing live objects for living
people. Nowadays is considered as one of the most important and greatest cultural heritages
that Mexico possess, and also the largest toy collection in the world by a single collector. Located at a traditional and folkloric district in the city, it is a place that has been special
since it was founded, by promoting a completely familiar space which offers a different
perspective that many other cultural establishments do not. The particularity of this
museum is that it is capable to make people smile naturally and always evoking emotions
related with their childhood. When you start walking through the collection ordinary
happy moments of your life starts to sparkle like little lights from beautiful memories that
were involved with toys and other playful objects. From younger kids to elder people,
these treasures make them travel through a time capsule to the past and produce special
feelings from nostalgic moments. The special memories these pieces provide to the people, brings out a familiar and
harmonic environment inside the place, giving more reasons to get convinced that the
Antique Toy Museum has been working not just as a simple collection of human being
history, but also as an important bond of values between the people who visits the
museum. We combine different types of art, design and other creative processes in our
exhibition. We have been an important trigger of emerging artists by giving this future
talents, a space to express themselves in a creative way. The museum is renowned nowa
days for being a professional platform for amateur talents. Another important fact to emphasize is the philosophy we have about motivating the
Mexican society by inspiring them with beautiful objects created in different past ages in
the national industry, based on changing the skeptical minds of the people which thinks
there is no values to be proud of in this country. Nowadays in which a lot of people
ignores many potential things of what this country is capable of, we try to expand the
vision by showing them beautiful objects in an accesible way. Mexicans must feel proud
to share this amazing worldwide heritage, which is in constant evolution, growing up in
pieces with the time, and looking for support to continue rising as a cultural legacy. This
first years has been amazing but resources are getting scarce with the possibility to shut
down this community museum. We need support to continue sharing this children
heritage for future generations.
