Ebenezer Scrooge hates happiness, love, family, generosity, and also Christmas. Seven years after the death of his business partner Jacob Marley he is haunted by his ghost, which warns Scrooge that the dead who led bad lives are forced to roam around and not be at peace. The ghost also claims that three other ghosts are going to appear to Scrooge, and that he can change his life before it's too late.

This is the synopsis of A Christmas Carol, the tale by Charles Dickens, first published in London by Chapman & Hall in 1843 and illustrated by John Leech. It has become one of the dearest and well known Christmas stories around the world. But how did this story come to life? The real-life inspiration for Tiny Tim had a much sadder fate. Dickens’s frustration about poverty in Great Britain led to a classic.

In October 1843, Dickens travelled to Manchester to give a speech in support of the Athenaeum, an educational charity for working men and women. His older sister, F***y, lived in Manchester with her husband, Henry Burnett, and their two sons, Harry and Charles. When Dickens visited them, he was confronted by the difficulties facing his disabled nephew Harry. It made him think about the realities of what life was like for impoverished disabled children, whose lives were even harder than those of their siblings. Harry was the inspiration for Tiny Tim. Sadly, unlike his fictional counterpart, Harry Burnett did not survive – despite his uncle’s best efforts to pay doctors to save him.

By the time Dickens travelled back to London, he knew he needed to write something monumentally important. The first known mention of A Christmas Carol is in a letter to Scottish academic Macvey Napier, on 24 October: “I plunged headlong into a little scheme ...[and] set an artist at work upon it.” The artist was Dickens’s great friend John Leech, who would become famous as one of the leading cartoonists for Punch.

Dickens spent six weeks writing. He finished the novella on 2 December, but instead of being relieved, he was stressed and panicking about finances. His bank account was overdrawn and his publishers, Chapman and Hall, were unsupportive of what they considered a strange idea. His current novel, Martin Chuzzlewit, had lost readers during its serialisation, and the publishers were losing confidence in their star author. As a result they refused to pay the full costs for publishing A Christmas Carol, so Dickens paid the rest himself. Now the book was finished, Dickens was furious at how little effort Chapman and Hall were making to publicise it. They came to regret their lack of confidence: A Christmas Carol was an instant and overwhelming success, and in 1844, Charles Dickens moved to rival publishing house Bradbury and Evans.

The astonishing and immediate success of A Christmas Carol surprised even its author. Six thousand copies were published on 19 December, and on Christmas Eve Dickens received a letter from Chapman and Hall to say “as the orders were coming in fast from town and country, it would soon be necessary to reprint”.

A Christmas Carol has never been out of print. It is known throughout the world and it can be guaranteed to be commented on in newspapers every December. Dickens used it as a mouthpiece for his own feelings about society. There have been countless theatre, film, and TV adaptations of A Christmas Carol.

Última lección de la semana 👀 aunque igual a su clase, mejor lleguen temprano 😌 ahí nos vemos 🇺🇸

Dicen que un adulto creativo es un niño que sobrevivió 💫 por eso para seguir aprendiendo hoy les proponemos algo diferente: jugar. ¿Recuerdan cuál fue su juego favorito cuándo eran niños? 🎁 ese que no soltaban.

Algo que siempre está muy presente cuando somos niños es la imaginación 💭 y siempre es útil regresar a ella cómo un diálogo interno. Ahora bien, si nos ponemos creativos y nos hablamos en inglés a nosotros mismos, esa puede ser una forma nueva de practicar nuestro inglés.

Quizás al principio nos demos cuenta que hay palabras que no sepamos decir, y justo ahí empiezan nuevos aprendizajes y podremos aumentar nuestro vocabulario 🤔 recuerden que también siempre podemos buscar nuevas formas de decir las cosas ¿lo intentamos? 📚🇺🇸 nos vemos en clase la próxima semana para que nos cuenten cómo les fue.

It's not always easy to say you're sorry. Sometimes we're too preoccupied to notice when we've hurt someone, or if we do, too busy to make a proper apology. In other cases, personal pride keeps us from admittingwe've done something wrong. Nevertheless, if we want to maintain good relationships with friends and colleagues, it's essential to know when and how to apologize. Here you have some advice on that.

1. Apologize right away. Even if it feels awkward to say you're sorry, do it as soon as possible. Ifyou wait for the perfect moment, you may end up not apologizing at all. At the same time, if you've waited a bit too long, remember that it's never too late to say you're sorry and set things right.

2. Admit you did something wrong. Don't Let your personal pride get in the way of apologizing. Accept fully that you might have said or done something hurtful. Don't say, "I'm sorry if I offended anyone" or 'Tm sorry you feel that way." This implies that you didn't really do anything wrong, that the other person is just overly sensitive. None of us is perfect, and there's no reason to feel embarrassed about needing to apologize.

3. Acknowledge any damage caused. Our mistakes often have unpleasant consequences. An apology isn't complete unless you take responsibility both for hurting someone's feelings and for the specific problems you may have caused in that person's life.

4. Offer to make things right. To show you're sincerely sorry, offer to repair any damage you've done. If you've broken something, offer to replace it. If you forgot a birthday, offer to take your friend out to dinner. Or if you're not sure what to do, say, "How can I make this up to you?"

5. Promise to act differently in the future. After admitting that you made a mistake, promise not to do it again, and keep to your commitment! If you have to apologize over and over for the same offenses, you'll soon lose the confidence of your friends.

Finally, sometimes we hesitate to say we're sorry because we feel the other person is more at fault and should apologize first! In these cases, remember that there are rights and wrongs on both sides of any conflict.

Buen día alumn@s 😃 este domingo queremos hablarles de un tema complicado y del que ya se han dicho muchas cosas: no, no es el subjuntivo, sino el Arte. Hay muchísimas definiciones sobre lo que es el Arte, pero hoy queremos quedarnos con una precisión: llamaremos Arte a las obras que con el dominio de una técnica se producen para expresar una realidad y conmover a un público 👀

Cada técnica genera su propio lenguaje, cómo el inglés mismo, y en su afán de expresar algo comunica. Eso mismo buscamos nosotros al hablar en inglés 🗣️ ésto nos da la posibilidad de volvernos artistas. Al hablar otro idioma buscamos comunicarnos así como entender y que se nos entienda. Si bien no siempre se logra conmover, convencer es un objetivo muy recurrente 🎯

A lo que vamos es que, cuándo practiquen inglés, piensen que están creando arte y denle una intención 💬 recuerden que sus palabras tienen un impacto y ustedes también pueden lograr obras de arte 💫 Nos vemos en clase para seguir aprendiendo.
