CROSS STITCH LINGO AND ACRONYMS
If you are cross stitching and share your work in social media platforms like groups on Facebook or Reddit, you might see some weird words which will make no sense to you but, they are just lingo or acronyms that cross stitchers use, sort of a ā€œprivateā€ language of the hobby.
We want to make it easier for you to understand them and use them like a pro! Letā€™s start:
BAP - Big Ass Project
HEAD - Heaven and earth designs. Large, beautiful, full-coverage pieces where even the background is completely covered in stitches.
FAD - Fun And Done!
FFN - Finished For Now.
FFO- Fully/Finally Finished Objects.
FS - Forgotten Stash.
Floss toss - Tossing floss on different fabrics to see which ones to use.
FROG or FROGGING - When you have to rip out mistakes. "Rip it, rip it" sounds like a frog.
LNS - Local Needlework Shop.
NOPE - No Observable Progress Expected. Itā€™s for those projects you havenā€™t completely given up on but something is preventing it from progressing towards completion.
McBAP - Massively Complicated Big Ass Project.
ONS - Online Needlework Shop.
ORT - Left over threads / Old Raggedy Threads / Orphaned Random Threads.
PAD - Project All Done.
PFO - Pulled from Oblivion (for those projects you haven't worked on in a long time).
PHD - Project Half Done.
PIGS - Projects In Grocery Sacks. Used for when you put your own kit together from fabric threads and pattern (with tote bags, aka PIT).
RR - Round Robin, the act of passing a project from person to person until completed.
SABLE ā€“ Stash Acquired Beyond Life Expectancy.
SAL - Stitch Along. When a pattern is released in small parts, usually once a month, so you are stitching a long with a group of other people following the same design.
S*X - Stash Enhancement Experience
SINS - Stuff I'll Never Stitch
SIP - Stitching in Progress
STASH - Special Treasures All Secretly Hidden
TOAD - Trashed Object Abandoned in Disgust
Thread chicken - when you try to get that last stitch in and just barely make it with the amount of floss left on your needle (which means you won).
USO ā€“ Unstarted Objects
UFO - Unfinished object
WHIMM - Work Hidden in My Mind
WIP - Work in Progress
WISP - Work in Slow Progress
WTF - Waiting to Finish

When you get a knot on the thread, donĀ“t pull on it! Put the needle in the loop of the knot and lift it up until the knot tightens around the needle. Then, pull the needle out and put it again thru the bigger loop and pull on it until the knot comes undone.

Cross stitching instead of pills?

As you know, having a hobby is very important for our emotional life, especially with cross stitching we can escape from the world for a while, to meditate, to think about something calmly or just not to think at all! Just to enjoy the process. Itā€™s also an act of creation, a piece that will make a great decoration for our space, or as a warm and nice gift for someone we love.

But while embroidering, we do something more, we donā€™t think about it very much- we are constantly making small movements with our hands and, thanks to this, when we are cross stitching we make our brain work out which helps us to keep it in tone, improve memory and to develop imagination. Also, we learn to be more patient and to concentrate our attention better!
Isnā€™t it great?!
Did you know about it? And what is cross stitching for you?
