Justice Leila Seth was born in October 1930, Lucknow, India. After finishing her schooling there, Leila began working as a stenographer in Kolkata. She was introduced to her husband Prem Seth and soon they were engaged and had what she likes to call a “semi-arranged” marriage.

A few years later, Leila and Prem moved to London where Prem was working at Bata. She realized that London meant a great opportunity to study further but since she had a baby by that time, she shortlisted careers that would not require her to attend classes. And that’s how she narrowed down on law, simply because it was something one could do from home!

She had became the first woman to top the London Bar exam. The British press had hailed her triumph, describing Seth as ‘Mother in Law’. This was the very beginning of her illustrious and influential career as a legal practitioner and jurist.

Justice Leila and Prem Seth moved back to India soon after Leila had passed her bar exam. She initially worked under a senior lawyer, named Mr. Sachin Chaudhary, and she recounts her experience like this “Looking at me, he asked, “Why are you here, go and get married”. I said I am married. He said, “It is important to have children”. I said “I have a child”. Then he said, “Look it is unfair on the child not to have siblings, you should have two…”, I said, “I have three children “… then he couldn’t say anything.” Finally, he grudgingly agreed, commending her persistence.

In her long and remarkable career, Justice Leila Seth carved a legacy far greater than the sum of her many parts. She was a visionary not only in her approach to the law, but in all aspects of social justice.

Justice Leila Seth had a number of firsts to her credit from topping the Senior Cambridge examinations to topping the London Bar examinations to being the first woman judge on the Delhi High Court and the first woman to become Chief Justice of a State High Court. She was also appointed the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh. Justice Seth sat upon a number of enquiry commissions like the one on the death of businessman Rajan Pillai in police custody. She served on the Law Commission of India till 2000. She was also one of the members of the three-member Justice Verma committee. She was responsible for the amendments to the Hindu Succession Act that gave equal rights to daughters in joint family property.
She wrote 3 books: Her autobiography, On Balance (Penguin), has received much acclaim. Her latest book was called Talking Of Justice—People's Rights In Modern India (Aleph).

Leila Seth passed away on May 5, 2017, at the age of 86 donating her eyes and other organs for transplant or medical research purposes before her demise. Her optimistic spirit lives on in all of us. She lived a full, happy and meaningful life, and her outlook towards challenges posed by societal evils is one that we can all try and inculcate in ourselves. Her achievements are a result of her perseverance and dedication. Her life is a reminder for us to never give up, never stop loving, and never stop questioning the norm.

How the nation's first female doctor changed the face of medical care.

Elizabeth Blackwell, the Anglo-American physician who is considered the first woman doctor of medicine in modern times. Blackwell was inspired to pursue medicine by a dying friend who said her ordeal would have been better had she had a female physician.

Blackwell undertook the study of medicine privately with sympathetic physicians, and in 1847 she began seeking admission to a medical school. More than 20 leading schools rejected her application, but she was at length admitted, almost by fluke, to Geneva Medical College (a forerunner of Hobart College) in Geneva, New York.

Her months there were extremely difficult. Blackwell faced discrimination and obstacles in college, professors forced her to sit separately at lectures and often excluded her from labs. Even the local townspeople shunned her as a “bad” woman for defying her gender role.

Blackwell persevered, eventually earned the respect of professors and classmates, graduating first in her class in 1849. She became the first woman in the United States to graduate from medical school and the first modern-day woman doctor of medicine back then.

Blackwell went on and opened a small clinic to treat poor women in 1857, she opened the New York Infirmary for Women and Children. Her mission included providing positions for women physicians. During the Civil War, Blackwell, her sister and a colleague trained nurses for Union hospitals.

In 1868, Blackwell opened a medical college in New York City. A year later, she placed her sister in charge and returned permanently to London, where in 1875, she became a professor of gynecology at the new London School of Medicine for Women. She also helped found the National Health Society and published several books, including an autobiography, Pioneer Work in Opening the Medical Profession to Women (1895).

Dr. Blackwell is an inspiration to all women physicians.

Bhogi is the first day of the four-day Ponggal festival. Bhogi festival is the first day of Ponggal and is celebrated in honor of Lord Indra, the God of Clouds and Rains. Lord Indra is worshiped for the abundance of harvest, thereby bringing plenty and prosperity to the land. Thus, this day is also known as Indran.

People discard old and derelict things and concentrate on new things causing change or transformation. At dawn, people light bonfires with logs of wood, other solid-fuels, and wooden furniture at home that are no longer useful.

The spiritual significance for Bhogi is to control our senses and clean k**a, krodha, moha, lopa etc so that spiritual Bhogam in our life is fulfilled.
