Kuah Jenhan

Tonight I performed a really meaningful show for a few reasons. It was one of the most stacked comedy show in urban Malaysia. And about an hour before the show, I received news that my grandma had passed away. My Ah Ma (paternal grandma) was 93.

I told Dr Jason Leong and he immediately assured me that I could go if I wanted to or even switch the line up and go on first, anything. I asked to do an improvised hour on my grandma but I guess not anything haha.

I asked Rizal van Geyzel and Shamaine Othman what should I do and they asked, “what would Ah Ma want?”

I would never know for certain but all history points to Ah Ma saying: “go do your show and remember to take care” (in Cantonese).

My Ah Ma lived with me and cooked for me every day (till I graduated from college.) My Ah Ma was my best childhood friend. We would play imaginary pirate ship (I’m captain, she’s chef), imaginary cowboy town (I’m cowboy, she’s chef), imaginary Power Rangers (I’m all the Power Rangers, she’s chef).

When I was older, my grandad, her husband (in pic) passed away. My Ah Ma then told me stories of surviving the war and how she crawled through corn fields escaping bullets but made these stories entertaining somehow.

When I was older, my dad, her son passed away. I remember sitting in the kitchen that we ate at every day, now as two adults and my Ah Ma, in tears, asking me, “why am I alive to experience losing my husband and my son?” and I replied that I believed they lived fulfilling lives and we must try to celebrate their lives. She agreed.

My Ah Ma was an orphan and yet she built such a loving family for me. Thanks for living in many worlds with me, thanks for letting me be me, and thanks for always being the chef. I have lived, am living, and will live a wonderful life because of you, Ah Ma.

Ah Ma, I had a great set tonight ❤️. Almost a thousand people enjoyed it. I will celebrate your life.

It’s a really lovely slice of community theatre that I perform with 25 students and teachers from Langkawi about the legend of Gunung Raya and Machinchang. It’s their first time performing in KL!!

Oh my god. This was 2009 at TimeOut KL’s Comedy Thursdays!!! Can you hear my braces or is my cardigan too loud? Back then stand up comedy in Malaysia was still black magic, held ONCE A MONTH and tucked away in the basement of a dance club.
