A warm thank you to all who came for the opening weekend of our latest exhibition, 'Zhang Xu Zhan: Jungle Jungle'! Encompassing video animation and mixed-media installations, 'Jungle Jungle' is an exploration into the the commonality and plurality of culture, examining how the meanings of music and stories can change as they are circulate and become embedded in the places they take shape. The exhibition is on view at Level 3 of the gallery from now til 6 October 2024.

At the heart of our upcoming exhibition 'Zhang Xu Zhan: Jungle Jungle', lies the Golden Horse Award-winning animated short film, 'Compound Eyes of Tropical.' The exhibition opens this Sunday, 23 June, with a special artist talk with Zhang Xu Zhan and a workshop given by his production team. RSVP by emailing [email protected]! —— Inspired by the artist's time in residency in Indonesia, where he came across the local folktale 'Sang Kancil and the Crocodiles,' the film adapts the very same tale, borrowing elements from other similar folktales such as 'The Mouse and the Buffalo' from Zhang Xu Zhan's native Taiwan, and China's 'The Rabbit and the Crab.' Throughout the film, animal forms rapidly shift and interchange, opening up the exploration of global connection through the textual similarity of folktales. Instead of a singular story, the folktale is viewed through multiple perspectives, reflecting the flow of culture, and the many interconnections and affinities between humans and animals.   Read more on 'Compound Eyes of Tropical' at: https://www.moc.gov.tw/en/News_Content2.aspx?n=467&sms=10708&s=132886 https://pavilion.taicca.tw/portfolio-item/compound-eyes-of-tropical/ #ilhamgallerykl #zhangxuzhan #junglejungle #contemporaryart #asiancontemporaryart #artgallerykl

#ILHAMStuCoTakeover Last Saturday, our Student Council members got the chance to delve deep into our exhibition 'Nirmala Dutt: Statements'. #ILHAMStuCoTakeover23 Amidst the constant flux of environmental crises and geopolitical tensions, Nirmala's work remains evergreen. Today, we view our exhibition 'Nirmala Dutt: Statements' through the lens of Student Council members Iman, Johan, and Zara, to understand how Nirmala’s art resonates with a new generation. —— Shot by Iman, Johan, Zara Edited by Iman @thestarlotus @_yessireeee_ inmate127 #ilhamgallerykl #ilhamstudentcouncil #ilhamstudentcouncil2023 #nirmaladutt #contemporaryart #malaysianart

Our Student Council members had the opportunity to participate in some fantastic programmes at ILHAM in the past two weeks. First came a workshop on ornament weaving by the collective Sekolah Main Wayang (@sekolahmainwayang), conducted by Orang Asli teens from the collective's arts education outreach programme, Wayang TEKtek. It was a joyous afternoon of cultural exchange between like-minded youth, followed in the week after by a drypoint printing workshop with local artist collective Chetak 17 (@chetak.17), during which the members got to experience the rewarding processes of traditional printmaking. #ilhamgallerykl #ilhamstudentcouncil #arteducation #artworkshops #traditionalart #folkart #artgallery

Few spend as much time amongst art as gallery sitters do—and the ILHAM gallery sitters are no exception. In this first-ever edition of ILHAM Insights, we ask our sitters Nelson and Kiki to share with us their favourite works from our current exhibitions, 'Timoteus Anggawan Kusno: Phantoms', and 'Nirmala Dutt: Statements'. #ilhamgallerykl #ilhaminsights #artgallery #malaysianart #southeastasianart #contemporaryart

Throughout Timoteus Anggawan Kusno's 'Phantoms', the jathilan dance plays a central role. Created in collaboration with the traditional jathilan dancer community, 'Phantoms' utilises the dance both as a motif and a narrative tool, exploring the circular perception of time and the organic resistance to the idea of dominant high culture. #ilhamgallerykl #timoteusanggawankusno #southeastasianart #contemporaryart #videoart

Last week we had the pleasure of speaking with artist Timoteus Anggawan Kusno (@takusno), delving into his artistic process behind the creation of 'Reversal' and 'Terra Incognita', the two moving-image works that form 'Phantoms'; his fascination with the jathilan dance and its significance within the project; his thoughts on winning the @hannefkensfoundation @loopbarcelona Video Art Production Grant 2021; and why he seeks to challenge 'history' and its power through his practice. 'Phantoms' is at Level 3 of the gallery til 5 November. #ilhamgallerykl #timoteusanggawankusno #southeastasianart #contemporaryart #videoart

DISMANTING THE MONUMENTS: Artist Timoteus Anggawan Kusno (@takusno) takes us through a section of works—reproductions of portraits of former Dutch colonial officers from the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, with its figures and faces erased—from his new exhibition 'Phantoms', at Level 3 of the gallery. The exhibition opens this Saturday, 5 August with an artist walkthrough at 3 PM, followed at 4 PM by a conversation with Kusno and Han Nefkens of Han Nefkens Foundation (@hannefkensfoundation), moderated by Sharaad Kuttan (@sharaadkuttan). Carlos Quijon Jr., an independent curator who provided curatorial support for Dream of the Day describes his favourite artwork in the exhibition. This weekend is your last chance to view these works at the gallery! __ The exhibition title, Dream of the Day, draws from the 1965 manifesto of the Philippine-born artist David Medalla, well regarded for his long-lasting influence in the British and global contemporary art scene since the sixties.
