Bendahari Markets

Bridging the gap between Old and New Melaka.

31/12/2023

As we meet the final day of 2023, we wanted to highlight some hopes and dreams shared during the Laujiat marketplace event that we had.

Ray speaks of what his hopes are for Kneading Peacee, a social enterprise and also as a Melakan, and Vanessa of Scully’s Heritage speaks of her hopes for Melaka.

For 2024, our immediate hope is to find a good team member to establish our snackbar collaboration with Donald and Lily. Do message us if you know anyone who might be interested!

Wishing our friends a blessed start to the year that will be 2024.

27/12/2023

Meet our co-organizer Jojo or Jo Lim from Burps Brewery.

We met Jo in one of our marketplace activities just after the pandemic. A computer science masters student from MMU, she also has a penchant for heritage, and we are so grateful that she has also volunteered her time towards the Heritage Trades of Melaka exhibition-event earlier this year.

In this short video you’ll hear about how Jo started her small business Burps Brewery during the pandemic, and her hopes for Melaka, as a Melakan.

Thanks Jo for walking this journey together while you’re still studying. We look forward to working on a few more marketplace activities together in 2024 before you join the real world and fly the coop

26/12/2023

In this short video Fika introduces us to Baked by Kinotkuniya, a home-based bakery from Bukit Katil Melaka.

Raynier then shares about Kneading Peace, a social enterprise that helps refugee communities, based in Jalan Hang J***t. Raynier also introduces a bit of Swiss Culture through the food offered at the Cafe, with an infusion of his Malaysian roots.

Thanks guys for being part of the Laujiat Market! Co organized with Burps Brewery and Donald and Lily.

Meet Jin Wen, a baker from Sudo, and Caroline who spearheads a new brand known as Pie Tee.

Jin Wen's first language is Chinese and we thank her for sharing her journey in English (in spite of being nervous!), sharing her love for baking and how Sudo offered her a career opportunity. Caroline who initiated her own start-up Pie Tee just a year ago, shares her journey of spreading her own wings from her mother's well-known restaurant.

Thanks both for being part of our Laujiat Market co-organized with Burps Brewery, and co-hosted with Donald and Lily.

Trying to discover a new route for her business, Jennifer says of her rempah paste: "We have developed our paste to be versatile and able to create more recipes with it besides Nyonya Laksa. Easy to use for home cooking or even if you are planning to open a restaurant or cafe, skip the hard part and cost of workers or staff cutting, grinding and frying the paste for hours and messing up your kitchen.

Check out Donald and Lily's website for recipes, or on facebook or IG. If you are a small business also looking to start up, do contact Donald and Lily at The Bendahari.

Artisanal ice cream by Cakes and Crumbs Melaka is available at the Snackbar.

Home-made by Martina Lee who is a power-packed mom, who also makes delicious custom-made cakes for birthdays. Her cakes are always baked with a circular face, because she says, “that’s the way the icing gets perfected.” “Round! Not square!”

She is also Jennifer’s childhood friend, having known each other since Standard Five they both spent their growing up years studying at the Convent Holy Infant Jesus (CHIJ, now CIJ).

Cakes and Crumbs divinely-tasting ice cream is served with Donald & Lily’s nostalgic roti ice-cream; with either rum and raisin and / or a double scoop of belgian chocolate, topped with chocolate dip, and sprinkles of peanuts.

Yum.

Adam and his Laksa Bib

He saunters into the shop, requests his laksa fix, plonks himself at the table and then is in deep thought for a moment.

“You got an apron ah?”

He points at his pristinely clean white t-shirt.

“tissue can?”
“Nolah, need something bigger.”

And so, laksa bibs are now on loan, while you enjoy a Donald and Lily signature laksa.

P.S Thank you Adam for being so sporting!

Donald and Lily’s signature Mee Siam is on the menu this week!

Generally made from thin, rice vermicelli noodles, gaining its name and flavours of being hot, sour and sweet from Thai influence. It is believed that this dish originated from Penang but was a much loved staple of street food culture, and also cooked in Peranakan Chinese households.

Jennifer brings back this signature dish, which had been served in her family from the the days of when Uncle Donald began operating his push-cart business. Made from noodles, eggs, cucumber, and lime served with a tangy Assam Jawa sauce made from Donald and Lily’s Sambal Paste.

P.s Laksa is on a break this month (unless the chef can be convinced otherwise).
