My name is Aaron. I'm the accounts and outreach liaison at Portle and this is my Portle story.

I had just graduated with a degree in Psychological Science at the end of 2020 and was looking for something meaningful to do. That's when I met Jordan as he was looking to put together a team.

The mission to help connect those in ulu Sarawak is something close to my heart. While I grew up in Kuching, my family would always head back to Sebuyau for Gawai and other occasions. Back when there was no direct road to the village, we would have to drive to a riverside town and then take a boat. The whole trip would take about 5 hours one way.

Armed with determination to help, I joined the team that would become Portle. Things were tough at first but we stuck to it and now we're serving over 40 villages with our 6 collection points. With each delivery we make, I can't help but take pride in what we've started.

We still have a long way to go but with the spirit of 'Agi idup, Agi ngelaban' which means 'As long as I live, I will continue to fight', we will continue to weather every storm that comes our way to better the lives of our fellow Sarawakians. 💪❤️

As September comes to an end, we took some time to reflect on what went well during the past months and the milestones we've made along the way.

Partnering with Kuching Food Aid has been one of our proudest achievements thus far. The pandemic has impacted the livelihood of many rural communities, and we're happy to have been part of a driving force that helps others in times of need. We could not have done it without the support of our drivers, Collection Point agents, and all of you who contributed towards this amazing cause.

Days, weeks, and months just to get that one item - does it have to be that way for Malaysia in 2021?

Hello! 👋 I’m Shana, Portle’s marketing strategist who is currently assisting and the team. 🤓 Let’s get to know each other! 🥰

Sometime in mid-July 2021, I came across one of Portle’s advertisements regarding the expansion of their new routes by a friend, and was fascinated by how some entity was interested enough to develop a functional logistic service for rural areas.

Rural areas tend to be undeveloped for a myriad of reasons, and it’s rare that people would go through the trouble to change something that’s been the norm for years (even if it’s super troublesome). But as a village girl myself, I felt like someone was looking out to make life better for me, and that this was something truly special that deserved more attention in the public eye.

Filled with curiosity, I reached out to know more about Portle’s operations and discovered that Portle was made possible by the continuous efforts of... 4 people?!? 🤯

I jumped the gun and offered to help, and fast forward till today - I contributed towards some areas of expansion and assisted in the branding for Portle. The passion from all my new friends and their collective eagerness to strive for the better keeps me excited about every milestone that occurs with Portle - and pushes me to continuously improve my skills wherever possible.

Like everyone who’s been supporting us, I can’t wait to see how Portle can grow even further! ✨

Jobless, scared, and confused for 6 months. That was me.

Hi! 👋 I’m Mae, I'm in charge of Customer Experience for Portle and here is my story. 🥰

When I was in uni, I had my eyes set on being a programmer. After graduation, the pandemic hit but I was lucky enough to land myself a role as a web developer. For 6 months, my routine was work -> eat -> sleep. There was no meaning behind my life and it was draining me emotionally and physically.

Then, I met the founder of Portle . He told me about his vision and goals of bridging the logistics between the city and the rural areas of Sarawak and I was moved. The idea was wild and crazy and had nothing to do with what I studied, Cognitive Science. BUT I resonated with his idea to help those in rural areas to get their items easily, especially during this pandemic. I hopped on with no hesitations.

The days leading up to solidifying our plans were filled with laughter, heartwarming sessions and straight-up roasting each other and I couldn’t have asked for more. 🥺

I still remember when we secured our FIRST customer .clla. I was freaking over the roof and gave my all (still do) to ensure her items arrived safely. And the most heartwarming part is knowing that I’ve saved someone the journey, time, and effort to get their items. To this day, it still warms my heart knowing I’ve helped many people through Portle. My team members can vouch for how stupid I look dancing in front of the camera every time we’ve completed a delivery. 💃🏻

I was also able to make a friend out of our customer, . We wouldn’t have met each other if it wasn’t for Portle. 🥰

What keeps me going now is not just restless nights and uncertainties but love and care for all my fellow Sarawakians, especially those in rural areas. I believe that one day, Portle is going to be the bridge for those in the city and those in the rural areas.

With that said, to all those struggling out there, “Don’t settle for anything less. If you’re not happy with something in your life, you have every right to change it.” 💪🏻

Hello everyone! I’m Suki, Portle’s Strategy Manager. Building Portle from the ground up has been a whirlwind of an experience!

I trained as a tech lawyer. Working in this area especially when the pandemic hit amplified how technology has revolutionized our lives. Yet, the harsh reality is that billions of people still do not have internet access. Many Sarawakians still have to travel 4-6 hours (one way!) to their nearest town to buy essential items and collect their online shopping.

Growing Portle over the last 4 months has made me more determined to enhance rural accessibility and connectivity in Sarawak. Every day, we work with our partners to further democratize access to goods and empower individuals and communities.

Looking back, it's amazing how fast we have grown. We ran out first pilot project in May 2021. Today, Portle has created a network that has 40+ rural villages within its coverage and delivered more than 10,000 items to the interior regions of Sarawak. My time at Portle has been more rewarding than I could have imagined.

Two years prior to Portle, our team was helping villages access the Internet by building the necessary infrastructure across Sarawak. We realised that the logistic problem within Sarawak was impacting practically all of the rural population during the pandemic, and we decided to do something about it.

What does a mathematics/econs graduate do?

Hi guys! I’m Jordan, the Business Lead for Portle. Here to share a small story of mine.

It’s scary when we don’t know what to do after graduation and I was the same years ago! It was from trying out different things that I found an interest in running a business - but it has to be meaningful to me. That was how I decided to start Portle with the team.

Growing up in Kuching I never really knew Sarawak well. From my prior work in internet installations in Sarawak, I was disheartened to learn that most ulu Sarawakians travel for so many hours to the city just to get essential items and online shopping packages. With most people connected to the internet in Ulu Sarawak, I wanted to help transporters maximize cargo space and have people’s items delivered throughout ulu Sarawak, including online shopping items! This saves everyone the hassle by leveraging the internet to connect demand and supply.

It was daunting at first because I didn’t know anything about logistics and worried about the “what ifs”. But then my experience of trying things out first and learning was very helpful, I did that for my career and also in class, (I didn’t understand the math methods at first and was just memorizing the way to do it, but after doing a few of the same problems I slowly grasped the concepts). I decided to take that leap of faith with Portle. Boom, in two months we’ve grown to over 6 collection points covering over 40 villages in Sarawak with tons of learnings, and delivered over RM10,000 worth of goods!

My message is simple : “Don’t doubt too much! you just gotta try it out and learn from there”.

We'll never forget the emotions we felt when we spoke to a friend from ulu Baram.

"Nak order online tapi barang tak kan sampai kampung sebab takde adress. Kita perlu order pakai alamat saudara kat Miri. Bila sampai, baru kita pegi ke Miri untuk ambik”; "Biasalah, 4 jam ke Miri untuk dapat barang. Mana barangan dapat dihantar kat ulu!"

For those in ulu Sarawak, travelling upwards of 4+ hours one way to Miri to buy essential items or collecting online shopping parcels was the norm. Journeys often involved unpredictable transporter schedules, crossing rivers using express boats, harsh weather conditions and dangerous logging roads. Heavy downpours forced some to turn around and continue the journey when the rain subsided. With the pandemic and travel restrictions, those in ulu Sarawak could no longer easily drive out to the city for their daily necessities. Transporters cannot maximize their journeys due to limited information on demand.

This is why we want to make a change. The huge divide in access to goods and cargo space needs to be resolved.

Now no matter how far away from the city, those in ulu Baram can now pick up their items from their nearest Collection Point. Today, we have delivered over RM10,000 worth of items to rural areas in Sarawak! 🙌🙌🙌

Every day we take steps to grow and branch out into new regions to better serve all of Sarawak. None of this would be possible without all of you. A heartfelt thank you for trusting us, supporting us and being a part of our Portle network in Ulu Baram. 😊❤️
