脐带脱垂在阴道分娩中的发生率大概为千分之一。 一旦发生脐带脱垂，胎儿身体会压迫脐带，进而阻断胎儿的血供。 脐带脱垂可以是显性的，也可以是隐性的。
脐带脱垂是导致围产儿死亡的重要原因，发生率为0.1%～0.6%。
既然脐带脱垂如此凶险，能否提前发现和诊断呢？产前超声虽然可以检测到脐带状态，因而有一定的作用，但是，脐带在羊水中是不断漂浮游走的，因此，产前超声检查的脐带状态，并不代表最终会发展成脐带脱垂。“可以说，常规超声筛查脐带脱垂缺乏敏感性和特异性，正是因为产前超声都无法预警脐带脱垂，所以孕妇一定要注意脐带脱垂可能出现的症状。”
“与脐带脱垂相关的胎心率异常，主要是胎心率过缓或胎心率变异减速。”但这个判断标准并不是绝对的，因为有些孕妇发生脐带先露和脐带脱垂时，胎心率也可能是正常的，所以，只能在分娩过程中进行常规阴道检查时，才能首次诊断 . 如果孕妇有脐带脱垂的高危因素，比如胎先露位置较高、胎膜破裂、胎膜破裂伴羊水过多，都应立即行阴道检查。及时阴道检查，是诊断脐带脱垂的重要手段。

脐带脱垂的初期处理时间很紧迫，需要产科医生的快速反应。孕妇宫口开全前，一旦确诊发生了脐带脱垂，就应立即做好剖宫产相关术前准备。“脐带脱垂的剖宫产手术属于Ⅰ类剖宫产，即已经直接威胁到产妇或胎儿生命。”
孕妇万一在家中发生脐带脱垂怎么办？如果孕妇在家中临产，胎膜破裂、羊水流出，并发现脐带脱垂时，应迅速转成膝胸卧位并呼救，而且，在等待转送入医院过程中，都需要保持膝胸卧位。
