Cikgu Rosemah, also fondly known as Cikgu Mak Semah, was one of the finalists in Masterchef Malaysia Season 2 and the Culinary / Course Director of Gomarr Academy. She is an advocate of Malaysian Heritage Cuisines and actively promotes Masakan Warisan Malaysia through a series of cooking classes and private dining events. Baba Jerry and I have the privilege to have her as our mentor in Warisan Masakan Melayu and currently, we are taking a new course in culinary education 🥳

Cikgu Rosemah embodied everything we looked for in a true mentor - she is a selfless, generous, and caring teacher, with boundless energy and immeasurable patience. In our fast-paced, fast-food world, we must seize those magic moments to share special and meaningful meals with our loved ones. Baba Jerry and Nyonya Su Pei have spent many years compiling Nyonya recipes that our mothers, grandmas, and great-grandmas kept at the back of kitchen drawers, saved in personal recipe boxes or painstakingly jotted in notebooks, to share with their daughters. *Kerabu Ong Lai (Pineapple Hand-Tossed Salad)*
A lively, light and refreshing kerabu (hand-tossed salad), the tastebud-awakening flavour contrasts between the pineapple slices, shallots, lime and chillies will blow you away.

*Nyonya Gulai Kay (Nyonya Curry Chicken)*
Freshly hand-pounded rempah simmered slowly into a home-made curry with a deep and intensely aromatic savour. Nyonya Su Pei's signature dish.

*Hoo Belanda (Fish In Tamarind Gravy)*
The combination of tamarind juice and onions coupled with the freshness of the catch of the day makes this Penang Nyonya staple and irresistible dish.

This cooking class will be done in a demo format. At the end of the session, participants will get to taste all 3 dishes during the class.

That's how we learn, we have to re-learn and we better ourselves in understanding the science of cooking. Self-education is, I firmly believe, the only kind of education there is. To cook from the heart, first, we must understand the basics. Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice, and most of all, love of what we are doing or learning to do. Thank you to our mentors: Chef Tan Jee Yong and Chef Low Juan Chek for sharing your culinary knowledge with us. We will ensure your legacy stays alive. Experiences and Food are like two strings to a lute - played together, they have the potential to evoke beautiful, unforgettable, and unique experiences that could imprint upon one's body, mind, and soul.

Starting May 2022, The Heritage Artisans and The Upper Kitchen will be collaborating on a series of traditional cooking classes in Kuala Lumpur, fusing traditional recipes with food appreciation. Heritage Artisans Warisan Cooking classes will feature a combination of traditional Nyonya dishes, Chinese dialect cuisines, and even dishes and elements from their established private dining events.

"I’m really looking forward to this opportunity," said Nyonya Su Pei. “I love getting to work with people and share my love of food and cooking with all levels of culinary experience. These classes offer great opportunities for people to learn more about many aspects of traditional food and how to create great, unique dining experiences at home."

The Upper Kitchen is a baking and cooking studio strategically located at Damansara Uptown, Petaling Jaya. The fully-equipped cooking studio collaborates with experienced local and international guest chefs-instructors to bring great culinary experiences to participants. They offer hands-on culinary classes, baking workshops, and cooking demonstrations. The cozy cooking studio is also available for rental, private functions, recipe testing and development purposes.

“Professional home-cooks are natural teachers. They spend every day perfecting their cooking techniques, documenting recipes, guiding their children, and sharing their passion for food with everyone. I am delighted that we can now bring that passion into the comfort of people’s homes through The Upper Kitchen. We launched Heritage Artisans Warisan Cooking with the aim of building a platform for learning and helping boost people’s confidence in the kitchen. We will show you the why’s and how’s to create a memorable experience for your loved ones.” Baba Jerry shares.

Each class will take place in The Upper Kitchen’s first-level cooking studio. The seatings and teaching format vary depending on the complexity of the recipes. Printed recipes will be given in the paper and digital format, and participants will get to taste every dish presented in the class. Early registration is encouraged, as class sizes will be limited in capacity to offer a more intimate setting with The Heritage Artisans.
