At Wood Story, our dedication to preserving Malaysia’s cultural heritage and advancing environmental sustainability is at the heart of every project we undertake. Our primary focus is on salvaging and restoring historical kampung houses, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques to protect our cultural legacy while minimizing our ecological footprint. Here, we outline the significant milestones of our efforts in this area.

𝑲𝒂𝒎𝒑𝒖𝒏𝒈 𝑯𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝑵𝒐. 1: 𝑨𝒊𝒔𝒉𝒂 - 𝑹𝒖𝒎𝒂𝒉 𝑳𝒊𝒎𝒂𝒔𝒂𝒏
This Rumah Limasan was originally built in 1912 in Kuala Pilah. In 2018, we undertook a meticulous restoration process guided by our 'Malaysian Culture Preservation and Restoration Program.' This initiative underscores our commitment to preserving heritage while actively contributing to carbon reduction. By opting not to demolish this historic structure, we preserved its cultural importance and demonstrated an eco-friendly approach to restoration.

𝑲𝒂𝒎𝒑𝒖𝒏𝒈 𝑯𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝑵𝒐. 2: 𝑩𝒊𝒃𝒊 - 𝑹𝒖𝒎𝒂𝒉 𝑳𝒊𝒎𝒂𝒔𝒂𝒏
Our second project, Rumah Limasan No. 2, known as Bibi, was salvaged in 2017 and restored in 2018. This smaller Rumah Limasan originally constructed in the 1940s in Sungai Rotan, Jelebu, Negeri Sembilan, was rescued from abandonment. The restoration focused on retaining the original wooden structure while incorporating modern techniques to protect it from tropical weather and termite damage.

𝑲𝒂𝒎𝒑𝒖𝒏𝒈 𝑯𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝑵𝒐. 3: 𝑪𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒂 - 𝑹𝒖𝒎𝒂𝒉 𝑴𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒌𝒂𝒃𝒂𝒖 𝑩𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒋𝒖𝒏𝒈
This Rumah Minangkabau dates back to the 1910s, was salvaged from abandonment and restored with a focus on sustainability and traditional craftsmanship. Its large overhanging roof and elevated structure with a mezzanine floor are designed to reduce the need for artificial cooling. The original timber was treated and reused, significantly reducing the environmental impact compared to using new materials.

𝑲𝒂𝒎𝒑𝒖𝒏𝒈 𝑯𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝑵𝒐. 4: 𝑫𝒂𝒚𝒂𝒏𝒂 - 𝑹𝒖𝒎𝒂𝒉 𝑴𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒌𝒂𝒃𝒂𝒖 𝑩𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒋𝒖𝒏𝒈
The 4th house of Rumah Minangkabau is a noteworthy example of Malay architecture. Built in 1890, this Rumah Beranjung is among the oldest surviving examples from the region. Its elevated structure and distinctive beranjung (raised platform) address both the social and environmental needs of the time. Traditionally, Rumah Beranjung served not only as a family residence but also as a venue for social gatherings and ceremonies.

Bringing the Past to Life
"Traditional Malay Kampung House – A journey of preservation and revitalization, where cultural heritage and environmental sustainability are safeguarded for future generations to cherish and inherit."

Salvaging a decades-old kampung wooden house is a challenging process that requires careful planning and craftsmanship. It begins with assessing the condition of the house, documenting its design, and then carefully disassembling the structure. Each piece of wood is labeled to ensure accurate reassembly.

Damaged wood is repaired or replaced, and all original materials are treated to prevent decay and pest damage. During reconstruction, traditional techniques are used to maintain authenticity, while modern adaptations like discreet plumbing or electrical systems may be added.

Cultural and environmental considerations are key throughout the process. The goal is to preserve the house’s heritage while minimizing environmental impact by reusing materials and avoiding carbon-intensive ones like steel or concrete.

Once rebuilt, the house retains its original charm but is adapted for modern living. Natural features like its elevated design help with cooling, reducing energy use. Ultimately, this tough yet rewarding journey preserves not just a building, but a legacy, passing on the heritage and sustainability values to future generations. The restored house becomes a living monument to Malaysia’s architectural and cultural history.
