VOYAGE TO THE GREAT INDIES (1644 - 1651), presented by Serge Jardin contains a unique document detailing the harbour and fortified town of Melaka in its early days as a Dutch colony, which was in 1646, a mere 5 years after Melaka was taken over from the Portuguese. Through the eyes of a French mercenary, serving with the Dutch as a musketeer, we discover Melaka and its surrounding’s diverse population, strange and exotic wildlife and plants, as well as the daily life and festivities within the fortress and its local customs. Jardin’s book will be of help for scholars and amateur historians who is interested in this part of Melaka’s previously obscure history. Available at our Shopee store : https://my.shp.ee/xN2aqmA
The book ‘ Voyage to the Great Indies (1644-1651)’ by Jean Guidon de Chambelle, which is translated, presented and annotated by Serge Jardin is one of the earliest account of the town of Melaka after its capture by the Dutch from the Portuguese. The ‘Report of Governor Balthasar Bort on Malacca’, written in 1678 and published by the Malayan Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society in 1927 seem to be the only other document. However, this was an official report that was written by the sixth governor of Melaka, from 1665 to 1679. The diary of de Chambelle predates Bort’s writings on Melaka and provides the reader with a rare insight into the social and political life of the occupants of Dutch Melaka at that time. This book serves as an almost daily account of a French mercenary’s visit to Southeast Asia in the 17th century. It is a diary of events, observed and reported by an ordinary person, who was an ordinary employee of the VOC and was present in Melaka from 1646 to 1651. The original document is a gorgeously hand-written diary stored in the archives of Europe and almost forgotten. Interestingly, 11 of its 29 chapters are dedicated to Melaka and made up of what the author had seen and experienced there. Serge Jardin has helped translate this document and provide colour to the historical context of Melaka for the original text.
