Baby Whale Has Tail Nearly Chopped Off By Boat Propeller And Has To Be Euthanized

The failed rescue was "one of the saddest days I have lived in the ocean," said Cristina Mittermeier , the National Geographic photographer who snapped this haunting photograph of the severely injured young whale in Spain.

There will be no end to the suffering of marine animals at the hands of humans until we are mobilized to enact real change. What the rest of us divers need to do is to become more engaged. Enforcing regulations on vessel speed limits is very difficult but it all begins with awareness and public pressure; the kind that demands that the voices of thousands of people are heard.

National Dive League Malaysia is urging all of our divers to respect the ocean and protect the lives.

Coral reefs make up a fraction of the ocean – less than 1% – but they provide a home to around 25% of all the world’s marine life. Over 4,000 different species of fish rely on coral reefs! 😍

NDL Fun Fact: Sea Cucumber P**p Could Revitalize Coral Reefs 🌊🥒

In one reef, three million sea cucumbers released 64,000 metric tons of nutrient-packed poo back into the ecosystem. 🤯

It is often smaller, less charismatic species like Sea Cucumber that play vital roles like these in ecosystems. 💯

As deposit feeders, sea cucumbers play an important role in nutrient cycling. They help recycle nutrients, breaking down debris and other organic matter after which bacteria can continue the degradation process. ♻️ The inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus they excrete enhances the ocean habitat. 🐠🐬🐡🐙🦑

Ultimately all species deserve protection, as divers we mustn’t neglect species like the sea cucumber. 💙
