Do you know what the real purpose of EcoBricks is?
To put people off making them.
They are intended to make people aware of how much of the plastic they buy cannot be recycled. And, because making an EcoBrick properly takes a very long time, the process itself is meant to be off-putting. So, itās a kind of ālook how much plastic you buy and look how difficult it is to transform it into anything remotely useful.ā
And thereās the other thing: EcoBricks are only remotely useful. What they get made into is a key question. And where. EcoBricks will not, as many believe, be sent abroad to build houses in impoverished places, and if they were then surely that would just be like sending them our rubbish ā a way of carrying on consuming the earth and āhelpingā those made less fortunate largely by our consumption. Iād be angry if this was the case, but it isn't, because the point of EcoBricks is to keep them extremely local.
As I said, EcoBricks are time-consuming to make. Even if you had all the material available straight away, just packing one adequately would take in the region of 4 hours. And the material must all be non-biodegradable and cleaned/washed/dried thoroughly. And then, if the EcoBrick has been made well-enough to be used in a structure, if must be covered in cob if itās outside (or concrete, but thatās nasty stuff) or it will perish under the sunās UV light.
Another question: what happens at the end of the EcoBrick structureās life? Is this not, ultimately, just deferring the inevitable?
One of the ideas behind EcoBricks is that they keep plastics out of āenergy-intensiveā industrial recycling. I agree that reuse is better than recycling, however that reuse has to be genuinely valuable. I would question anything that takes something recyclable and turns it into something non-recyclable. Itās like crafting: it isnāt āreuseā to raid the recycling bin for material that will be turned into something non-recyclable.
Yes, EcoBricks can be made into benches, raised beds, etc., but really itās very possible to make those kinds of structures out of materials with considerably smaller environmental footprints than bottles full of plastic.
All that plastic first had to be made, then transported, then bought. Whatever the plastic contained, ditto. If the plastic canāt be recycled ā if we are filling EcoBricks with non-recyclable waste ā what does this say about our consumer habits?
Wouldnāt it be better to simply not buy the plastic in the first place?
It strikes me that EcoBricks are a way of offsetting our habits ā i.e. our guilt. There will, of course, be those that make them out of litter or packaging ādonatedā from local stores, and make them properly and use them conscientiously and correctly, but letās be clear: EcoBricks are not a solution to problem plastics.
The problem is consumerism. We canāt carry on like we are. We canāt hope to solve problem plastics through buying problem plastics. Thatās like saying we can solve the problem of aviation emissions by taking more flights just so we can offset the carbon we generate.
We need to buy less stuff.
If you want to make an EcoBrick, bear in mind that they are a considerable commitment. Bear in mind that they are so difficult to make effectively that, if you manage to make one, it will probably do its intended job of putting you off making more. Bear in mind that a poorly-made EcoBrick is about as useful as a toilet-paper Thermos flask.
If you donāt have enough stuff to adequately pack an EcoBrick, youāll fail to make one properly. Not having enough is better than having enough, unless you carry on regardless and make something useless.
If you really want to make a proper EcoBrick, first consider how you would like to be unable to.
When we involve children in our clean ups, we are actually educating them on what are the pollutants that affect our environment adversely. Children understand this very quickly by noticing what we pick up during the clean ups. Some children can even tell which type of ci******es are expensive from the butts they pick up! Therefore it is important to educate our children to learn about what damages our Mother Earth and which habits we need to foster to ensure our environment is clean and sustainable for all of us (and we mean all human, animals, insects and plants) and future citizens of the world. Teach them to love our planet.
