1. Regulates absorption of calcium and phosphorous
Vitamin D is important for maintaining a healthy skeleton. Vitamin D helps keep serum calcium and phosphorus concentrations within the normal range to promote mineralization of bones and maintain essential cellular functions. Lack of vitamin D has been recognized as a major cause of metabolic bone diseases in seniors like osteomalacia and osteoporosis.

2. Facilitates normal immune system function
An important immune system regulator, vitamin D has been shown to inhibit the development of autoimmune diseases. Several epidemiological studies have linked poor vitamin D levels to higher susceptibility of immune-mediated disorders, like chronic infections and autoimmune diseases

3. Muscle function
Vitamin D has the ability to change gene transcription of messenger RNA and subsequent protein synthesis. What does this mean? Without enough vitamin D, our bodies won’t be able to build the proteins necessary to support proper muscle growth.

4. Cardiovascular function (reduces your risk of developing heart disease)
Vitamin D receptors are distributed in the vascular smooth muscle, endothelium and cardiomyocytes, and deficiency has been linked with cardiovascular disease.

5. Brain development (reduces chance of developing multiple sclerosis)
The vitamin D receptor (VDR) and 1-alpha-hydroxylase (the enzyme responsible for formation of active vitamin D) have been found in the human brain, which suggests an important role for its utilization in nervous system processes. One study found that high circulating levels of vitamin D are associated with a lower risk of MS (a disease that affects the nervous system).

6. Significantly reduces your risk of developing cancer
If you do a basic search in the PubMed database, you will find over 63 observational studies that correlate vitamin D consumption with reduction in cancer risk. Vitamin D has anti-proliferative effects on cancer, activating apoptotic pathways that inhibit the growth of cancer cells.

7. Improves respiratory function
Observational studies suggest that a lack of vitamin D increases ones risk of respiratory infections, which may contribute to wheezing illnesses in children and adults, and irritate asthmatic conditions.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝?

1. It’s a Good Source of Essential Nutrients
Seafood is low in saturated fats, high in protein, and packed full of important nutrients including omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin A, and B vitamins. These nutrients are essential in maintaining your health—particularly your brain, eyes, and immune system. Because your body cannot produce omega-3s on its own, it’s especially important to make seafood a part of your diet for optimum health.

2. It Helps With Your Eyesight
As you get older, your risk of losing your eyesight increases. Luckily, the nutrients in seafood can help with that because omega-3 fatty acids also reduce your risk of developing eye diseases. Vitamin A is crucial for eye health—without enough vitamin A in your diet, you could develop night blindness, which makes it difficult to drive.

3. It Can Give You More Brain Power
Seafood can give your brain a much needed boost and improve long-term brain health. Omega-3s can help reduce your risk of developing Alzheimer's disease and prevent mental decline as you grow older. These nutrients also help your body properly regulate memory and emotion.

4. It Promotes Heart Health
Fish—especially salmon—is very high in omega-3 fatty acids, which keep your heart healthy. Eating fish once or twice a week can improve your heart health and lower your risk of heart attacks and strokes. Make sure to eat a variety of fish in order to get all the right nutrients for your health.

5. It Makes Skin and Hair Healthier
If you are prone to dry skin, eating seafood will help by preserving your skin’s moisture. The omega-3s and fish oil in seafood help reduce acne and protect against the sun’s ultraviolet rays, leaving you with healthy, moisturized skin.

For stronger, healthier hair, you should add fatty fish to your diet. Salmon is the best fatty fish for healthy hair because it is packed full of the omega-3s that make your hair shiny and can even increase hair growth. Because salmon offers several benefits for both skin and hair, it’s an excellent choice to include salmon in your diet.

6. It Can Ease Joint Pain
If you often suffer from stiff joints in the morning, you may need more seafood in your diet. The omega-3 fatty acids in seafood have anti-inflammatory effects that can benefit people who experience joint pain. Eating seafood, especially fatty fish, can reduce joint stiffness as well as the symptoms of arthritis.

WHAT IS ACNE?
In each pore of our skin, we have sebaceous glands that produce sebum, an oil-like liquid, which helps to moisturize and protect our skin. When too many dead skin cells collect on the top of the skin in conjunction with high amounts of sebum, this can create a clog in our sebaceous glands and will result in inflammation. Our body will respond to this inflammation by sending white blood cells to the site of the clog which forms the white-headed pimples called acne. So, what the best foods for hormonal acne?

1. ZINC FOODS FOR HORMONAL ACNE
2. OMEGA-3 FOODS FOR HORMONAL ACNE
3. GUT HEALING FOODS FOR HORMONAL ACNE
4. ANTIOXIDANT FOODS FOR HORMONAL ACNE

Numbness is a loss of feeling or sensation in an area of the body. It can be complete or partial. It is usually a sign of a problem with nerves in the body, although it is a common symptom of many different medical conditions.

Most cases of numbness are not serious. In more severe cases, it causes complications related to not feeling pain (for example, causing burns if unable to feel the pain from high heat) or being unaware of what’s happening to parts of the body (for example, falling if unable to feel the position of one’s feet). It can also be a sign of a serious underlying condition such as diabetes or multiple sclerosis.

💢Other medical conditions that may cause numbness include:

Diabetes
Infections such as HIV or Lyme disease
Kidney disease
Medications or drug use
Multiple sclerosis
Stroke
Arthritis
Tumor
Spread of cancer to the spine
Animal and insect bites
Exposure to poisons/toxins

Vitamin C is one of the safest and most effective nutrients, experts say. Though it may not be the cure for the common cold, the benefits of vitamin C may include protection against immune system deficiencies, cardiovascular disease, prenatal health problems, eye disease, and even skin wrinkling. The tolerable upper intake level (or the maximum amount you can take in a day that likely won’t cause harm) is 2000 mg a day for adults.

Vitamin C is one of many antioxidants that can protect against damage caused by harmful molecules called free radicals, as well as toxic chemicals and pollutants like cigarette smoke. Free radicals can build up and contribute to the development of health conditions such as cancer, heart disease, and arthritis.

The body doesn't store vitamin C, so overdose is not a concern. But it's still important not to exceed the safe upper limit of 2,000 milligrams a day to avoid stomach upset and diarrhea.

Vitamin C is one of the “water-soluble” vitamins. Because your body doesn’t store them, you need to keep them in your diet all the time to maintain healthy levels. Eat vitamin-C-rich fruits and vegetables raw, or cook them with minimal water so you don't lose some of the water-soluble vitamin in the cooking water.

What is high blood pressure?

Narrow blood vessels, also known as arteries, create more resistance for blood flow. The narrower your arteries are, the more resistance there is, and the higher your blood pressure will be. Over the long term, the increased pressure can cause health issues, including heart disease.

Hypertension typically develops over the course of several years. Usually, you don’t notice any symptoms. But even without symptoms, high blood pressure can cause damage to your blood vessels and organs, especially the brain, heart, eyes, and kidneys.

Early detection is important. Regular blood pressure readings can help you and your doctor notice any changes. If your blood pressure is elevated, your doctor may have you check your blood pressure over a few weeks to see if the number stays elevated or falls back to normal levels.

Treatment for hypertension includes both prescription medication and healthy lifestyle changes. If the condition isn’t treated, it could lead to health issues, including heart attack and stroke.

Fresh meat is regarded as a valuable source of high quality protein.

When a protein contains all 9 amino acids (the building blocks of protein) that your body needs in adequate amounts, it’s thought to have high biological value and can be considered a complete protein (1Trusted Source).

After cooking, meat contains approximately 25–30% protein by weight.

A 3.5-ounce (100-gram) serving of cooked chicken breast contains about 31 grams of protein, while the same serving size from beef provides 27 grams.

Here’s a look at the nutritional content of a 3.5-ounce (100-gram) serving of lean beef (2Trusted Source):

Calories: 205
Protein: about 27 grams
Riboflavin: 15% of the Daily Value (DV)
Niacin: 24% of the DV
Vitamin B6: 19% of the DV
Vitamin B12: 158% of the DV
Iron: 16% of the DV
Phosphorus: 19% of the DV
Zinc: 68% of the DV
Selenium: 36% of the DV
Other muscle meats have similar nutrient profiles, although they contain less zinc.

Pork is particularly rich in thiamine. For example, pork chops provide 78% of the DV per 5.5-ounce (157-gram) serving (3Trusted Source).

Vitamin A, B12, iron, and selenium are present in significant amounts in liver and other organ meats. These meats are also excellent sources of choline, an important nutrient for brain, muscle, and liver health (4Trusted Source, 5Trusted Source).

When it comes to your health, what you put into your body goes a long way. That’s no different for your lungs. If you’re concerned about warding off lung cancer, repairing any damage that you may have done over the years with smoking, or managing an existing lung condition, such as COPD or asthma, listen up.

While you should always consult a doctor if you’re concerned about anything regarding your lungs, there are specific foods that you can eat that have been scientifically proven to be able to make a difference in the health of your lungs. Here are the best foods that are good for your lungs that experts recommend, plus tips on what to avoid.

Garlic

“Garlic has anti-inflammatory properties and reduces damage caused by free radicals,” say Adil Akhtar, MD, an oncologist and palliative care expert in Detroit. He adds that studies suggest that raw garlic consumption may also play a role in a reducing the risk of developing lung cancer, thus making it a great food for healthier lungs.

Water

“For optimal lung health make sure to drink plenty of water, as your lungs utilize water to keep your airways clean and clear of mucous and inflammatory build up,” explains Farshad Fani Marvasti, MD, the director of the Public Health, Prevention & Health Promotion at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix. “In my practice, the importance of drinking enough fluids can’t be stressed enough in terms of maintaining lung health. Lungs are 80% water, and even mild dehydration can impact lung function significantly,” adds Amanda Maucere, RD, Lung Health Institute.

Complex carbs

According to the American Lung Association, people who suffer from COPD may benefit from reducing carbohydrates in their diets and instead ingesting more healthy fats. “Carbohydrates produce the most carbon dioxide as part of their digestion compared to fats,” adds Marvasti. He recommends sticking to healthy carbs that are “loaded with fiber and more anti-inflammatory” like sprouted whole grain bread or steel cut oatmeal and avoiding simple carbs in all processed foods or pastries, white bread, and those in sugary beverages.

Healthy fats

“Fats have the lowest carbon dioxide load during metabolism,” says Amanda A. Kostro Miller, RD, LDN, who serves on the advisory board for Smart Healthy Living. Thus she explains that for someone who already has difficulty breathing, they may notice better breathing on a low carbohydrate, high-fat diet. “To get more healthy fats, include one serving of nuts daily. Try walnuts, which are the richest plant source of omega-3 fats, eat fatty fish—salmon, sardines, anchovies—at least two to three times per week, and sprinkle ground flaxseeds on cereals and salads,” suggests Suzanne Dixon, a registered dietitian with The Mesothelioma Center in Orlando, Florida.

Apples and tomatoes

According to Akhtar, apples and tomatoes have the ability to help slow the natural decline in the lung functions. And studies suggest that these two foods may play a role in helping to repair the lungs of ex-smokers, making them two standout foods good for lungs and breathing. “Apples and tomatoes contain high levels of antioxidants, which may be important in protecting the lungs from the harmful effects of atmospheric pollutants and cigarette smoke,” Akhtar adds.

Vitamin D-rich foods

Vitamin D can boost the immune system and reduce airway inflammation, Akhtar explains. Low levels of vitamin D are associated with increased childhood asthma and vitamin D supplements have been shown to help reduce asthma attacks. Other studies suggest a possible correlation between reduced vitamin D levels and lung disease. Dietary sources of vitamin D include fortified milk, eggs, yogurt and salmon—ensuring more of this food in your diet (and those of your kids) may just lead to healthier lungs long-term.

Green tea

This is a good choice for lung health due to its high levels of antioxidants, including quercetin, “which acts like a natural antihistamine and slows down the release of histamines, reduces inflammation and protects the lungs from irritation,” explains celebrity chef and nutritionist Serena P**n. “In addition to the fluids it provides, green tea also has super high levels of the antioxidants flavanol and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG),” Maucere notes.

Related: Everything You Need to Know About Pneumonia

Protein-rich foods

Making sure that you are getting ample protein is key to maintaining good lung health, says Dixon. She adds that most adults tend to get just a little protein at breakfast (cereal, toast, oatmeal, bagel), a bit more a lunch (turkey sandwich, chicken salad) and a big dose of protein at dinner (large chicken breast, steak, burgers). “That means most of our protein intake is skewed to later in the day. To help our bodies incorporate and use protein better, we should spread it out evenly throughout the day,” she explains. Dixon suggests opting for ample protein at each meal and selecting sources such as eggs, Greek yogurt, a protein shake, healthy plant-based proteins like nuts and legumes, and lean meats like poultry, which has been linked to a 10% reduction in the risk of developing lung cancer.

Leafy greens

“To support overall lung health and protect the lungs from inflammation and infection, leafy green vegetables, like spinach and kale, are anti-inflammatory powerhouses,” says Maucere. Per the expert, these foods contain chlorophyll, which gives them their green color and helps support blood flow to the lungs. “They also contain carotenoids like lutein and zeaxanthin which act as antioxidants in the body, removing free radicals that could cause lung damage.” In order to work these into your diet, the lung health expert suggests sautéing them with eggs. “Leafy greens and eggs come together nicely in this frittata recipe,” she explains.

Broccoli

A 2008 study found that broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables can be attributed to a reduced risk in developing lung cancer in smokers. Ashley Wood, a registered nurse in Atlanta, adds that broccoli is a lung healthy choice as, “it has a substance called L-sulforaphane, which turns on anti-inflammatory genes.” Other cruciferous vegetables include cauliflower, kale and Brussels sprouts.

Related: The Best Broccoli Salad Recipe Out There

Cayenne pepper

Cayenne pepper, per Marvasti, has been shown to be rich in capsaicin, which protects mucous membranes in the lungs by stimulating healthy secretions. Wood adds that “cayenne peppers have capsaicin that helps stimulate secretions and protects mucus membranes from upper and lower respiratory tract.” Add a dash of this to your meals as a lung-healthy food.

Ginger

Ginger is a natural decongestant that helps to clear up clogged air passages and improve circulation in the lungs, says Marvasti. He suggests trying the spice in the form of a soothing warm ginger tea. You can also grate fresh ginger, which can be purchased in the grocery store, over dishes like stir-fries.

✅You could live longer.

Recent studies found that coffee drinkers are less likely to die from some of the leading causes of death in women: coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes and kidney disease.

✅Your body may process glucose (or sugar) better.

That’s the theory behind studies that found that people who drink more coffee are less likely to get type 2 diabetes.

✅You're less likely to develop heart failure.

Drinking one to two cups of coffee a day may help ward off heart failure, when a weakened heart has difficulty pumping enough blood to the body.

✅You are less likely to develop Parkinson's disease.

Caffeine is not only linked to a lower chance of developing Parkinson’s disease, but it may also help those with the condition better control their movements.

✅Your liver will thank you.

Both regular and decaf coffee seem to have a protective effect on your liver. Research shows that coffee drinkers are more likely to have liver enzyme levels within a healthy range than people who don’t drink coffee.

✅Your DNA will be stronger.

Dark roast coffee decreases breakage in DNA strands, which occur naturally but can lead to cancer or tumors if not repaired by your cells.

✅Your odds of getting colon cancer will go way down.

One in 23 women develop colon cancer. But researchers found that coffee drinkers — decaf or regular — were 26 percent less likely to develop colorectal cancer.

✅You may decrease your risk of getting Alzheimer's disease.

Almost two-thirds of Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease are women. But the caffeine in two cups of coffee may provide significant protection against developing the condition. In fact, researchers found that women age 65 and older who drank two to three cups of coffee a day were less likely to develop dementia in general.

✅You're not as likely to suffer a stroke.

For women, drinking at least one cup of coffee a day is associated with lowered stroke risk, which is the fourth leading cause of death in women.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐭 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐬❓

People with diabetes are more susceptible to developing infections, as high blood sugar levels can weaken the patient's immune system defenses. In addition, some diabetes-related health issues, such as nerve damage and reduced blood flow to the extremities, increase the body's vulnerability to infection.

Diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage) causes problems with sensation, particularly in the feet. This lack of sensation sometimes means foot injuries go unnoticed. Untreated injuries can lead to infection. Some types of neuropathy can also lead to dry, cracked skin, which allows a convenient entry point for infection into the body.
People with diabetes often have low blood flow to the extremities. With less blood flow, the body is less able to mobilize normal immune defenses and nutrients that promote the body's ability to fight infection and promote healing.
