The talent list for enzymes starts with their exfoliating abilities. They help break down keratin protein in the uppermost layer of the skin to gently break up dead skin cells. This not only leads to smoother, healthier looking sin, but it also helps fight pigmentation and breakouts.
Ahead, the perks of using enzyme-infused skincare:
๐๐
๐ณ๐ผ๐น๐ถ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป: โFor the skin, enzymes help break up the keratinocytes which, as part of the life cycle of the skin surface, gradually renew themselves,โ Dr. Zalka says. โEnter enzymes which assist in the skin's natural process to be refreshed.
Usually enzymes are added into what's called DNA repair products, such as sun damage reversal or anti-aging products,โ Dr. Lancer says.
For those with rosacea or reactive, aka sensitive skin, enzymes are an excellent choice to enhance the skin appearance minus side effects of irritation,โ Dr. Zalka says.
Enzymes typically maintain a neutral pH, which can keep the skin's acid mantle at its desired set point and help keep skin in its best form,โ Dr. Zalka says.
If you want to make the most out of enzymes in skincare, make sure the product youโre using has enough of the ingredient for it to make a difference. โI think the important thing is to know that if a manufacturer or a brand is promoting the enzyme concept within their product, then the price should not be a common low price point,โ Dr. Lancer says. โIt depends on where that enzyme ingredient is on the ingredient list. If it's the last part of the list, chances are it's in a minuscule, barely detectable concentration.โ

Itโs common for people with acne-prone skin to be afraid of moisture, but the fact is all skin types need moisture. Those with acne tend to be afraid of oils, when in fact, they are a great way to add moisture back into the skin.

Omega 3s are a type of fatty acid that can be found in many different foods such as fish, soybeans, chia seeds, and flaxseeds. There are 3 different types of fatty acids, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These essential fatty acids are also available as an oil supplement. All of these fatty acids promote the production of sebum which is the natural oil that your skin needs to stay healthy and moisturized.

A no-brainer for every skin routine is collagen. Collagen is a protein that is essential to the health of our skin. It helps to maintain the integrity and elasticity, which in turn helps us to look younger. As we age, our collagen naturally declines. This is why supplementation is crucial! Marine collagen specifically, is a type-1 collagen derived from fish. It has the highest and most bioavailable amount of collagen in it compared to any other on the market.

Zinc is an essential mineral that is needed for many functions in the body, including healthy skin. Deficiency can lead to a number of health problems, including eczema and other skin disorders. Taking Zinc supplements has also been shown to help prevent and treat acne. This is due to its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to regulate oil production.

The beauty industry is guilty of cultural appropriation. Time and time again, we've seen beauty brands steal styles and practices from other cultures and attempt to repackage them as something "new" or "buzzy." The appropriation of hairstyles significant to Black culture like cornrows or the whitewashing of ancient Chinese wellness tools like gua sha are just a few examples that have been brought to the forefront. These acts alone are deeply problematic, but this issue also extends to ingredients.
Every country has plants and herbs indigenous to their land. But, what happens when brands who are not native to that land swoop in and audit their agriculture for use in their formulas? Throughout history, white-owned beauty and skincare companies have engaged in a pattern of sourcing materials from marginalized cultures in a quest to find the industry's next "trendy" ingredient. In doing so, they often fail to maintain an ingredient's cultural integrity and history.
African, Asian, Latin, and Indigenous cultures have all been affected by the colonization of their ingredients. The Eurocentric mindset skincare and beauty brands have operated with creates a two-fold problem. First, their failure to acknowledge the ingredient's native origins is a form of erasure. Second, they perpetuate the false narrative that a culture's ingredients are only worthy if fused with Western technology.

According to Dr. Brazzo, most people who have puffy eyes are genetically predisposed to them, so there isn't much you could do (or not do) to prevent them. "Simply put, they are caused by fat," he explains. "It gets worse as we ageโas the years go on, those fat pads get a little bit larger and sink down a little bit lower as skin loses its elasticity, so they become more noticeable."

While not sleeping enough is a problem for many reasons, it can negatively impact your skin, including causing puffy eyes. "If you already have some puffiness, you almost certainly will have mornings after you didn't sleep well where you wake up and it's worse," says Dr. Brazzo.

Overdoing it on cocktails can also make puffiness worse, since alcohol dehydrates skin and contributes to inflammation.

If you're an allergy sufferer, allergic reactions can exacerbate puffy eyes since there's a chronic swelling in your nasal area that doesn't go away, and you may be able to see this in your eye area. Even if you don't have allergies, your environment can contribute to puffy eyesโthey may be worse in dryer, colder times of year and less noticeable in warmer, more humid months.

First of all, lilac has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties to not only keep your skin clean but also actively aid in the healing process of inflammation or acne scarring caused by inflammatory lesions. The rapid calming effect that lilac has on skin is striking, as those who swear by its effectiveness have seen a major reduction of any and all acne inflammation in less than 30 days of use.
As we have discussed in the past, acne is caused by in imbalance of the skinโs moisture. So, to put it simply, when your skin is too dry it overcompensates and saturates itself with too much natural oil which ends up clogging pores and causing breakouts.
Lilac has a direct answer to this issue as it has the ability to reduce transepidermal water loss, keeping your skin at the appropriate level of moisture. It locks in moisture so your skin can better naturally regulate how much natural oil it needs to function properly.
On top of all of this incredible acne-fighting ability, lilac is also a powerful antioxidant which means it bolsters your skinโs defensive functions. Having antioxidants around helps to stem the tide of free radical damage, keeping your skin plump and youthful.

"Sunscreen is not an ingredient," asserts Haslacher. "It should be treated as a very important layer in your skincare routine and should always be applied last (but before makeup). The purpose of sunscreen is to form a protective film on top of the skin to shield itโSPF is not there to restore moisture balance or deliver ingredients deeper into the skin."
"Sunscreen is regulated by the FDA as a drug," she continues, "and those regulations require a specific amount of SPF in order for it to be effective, leaving little room for other active ingredients in a formula. Most importantly, when exposed to air and light, sunscreen becomes ineffective after a short period of time (about 90 minutes max). You need to reapply it if your skin is exposed to the sun."
Similarly, Greenfield doesn't recommend combining the two products; however, she has a different view on it. "Although moisturizers pe*****te the skin, they only get past the very top layer, which pretty much still stays on top of the skin, just like a sunscreen would." She continues, "Because although it may say SPF 15 or 30 on the label, the amount you put on your face will not be enough to get that much coverage, and it will be diluted out by the moisturizer. So, you will only have an SPF of 10 to 12 in effect on your skin.
The best way to apply is to put on moisturizer first, then apply an SPF 30 or more each morning at least 15 minutes prior to sun exposure."
Still, while it's not exactly derm-recommended, applying a moisturizer with SPF is better than applying no SPF at all. But because we want the best for you, dear readers, here are our favorite moisturizers and SPF options (separately).
