Of pineapple tarts and Malaysians

Pineapple tarts are a staple during Malaysia's festivities. Whether it is during Raya, CNY or even Deepavali, we pretend calories don't exist while consuming them, but do you know their origins?

The hint lies in the sweet, buttery pastry that we all know and love. Historians (and tart aficionados) reckon it comes from Portugal. When the Europeans come to trade and settle in Melacca, the Peranakan folks decide to adopt it and introduce a twist of their own. Pineapple's name in Hokkien is "Ong Lai", meaning come luck and it's no surprise why it is a big hit during Chinese New Year.

And as all things Malaysian, each community soon share the same love and welcomed it on their own special occasion, and a little Mat Salleh baby was adopted as part of the Malaysian food family.

I am MAD passionate about the delicacies I make and that is why a lot of thought and love has been put into my pineapple tarts. Made from locally grown pineapples, the freshest lemon juice and good quality butter (none of that Margarine!), it is little joys like this that makes Ramadhan and Raya in isolation a joy. I am sharing with you my version, it is up to you to share it with others or not 😉
