Good luck to all the runners in the Vancouver Marathon this weekend. Hope you feel our love as you pass by Pipeline Extension Road and Stanley Park Drive.
It's that time of year again, when we get to boast about performing for 40,000 people (they're just not all there at the same time). If you're participating in this year's Sun Run look for the Scary Lizards in our usual location, 6th Ave and Hemlock.
I always dreamed about being in a band and having our name in lights...or at least chalk.

Our band the Scary Lizards has been playing the Sun Run at the same location for about fifteen consecutive years now. Most years there is something that goes sideways during set up so we are accustomed to arriving at 7 am on race day with an attitude of adapt, improvise and overcome.
Five years ago, things were going great. We were all set up under the tent, the sound guys had dropped off the PA and generator and we had about thirty minutes to soundcheck before the first runners would be coming by. Well ahead of schedule. Then we tried to start the generator. Cough, cough, sputter. Five more pulls on the starter. Check the choke, fuel level, spark plug leads. Try again, Cough, cough, sputter.
I called up my master mechanic friend Ron and we held the cell phone close to the machine so he could hear the cough, cough, sputter. He suggested this and that which we tried. Nothing. Anxiety began to rise as we saw the wheelchair athletes cresting the hill. I called our Sun Run contact and waited for a return call while we all took turns yanking that bloody starter cord. I got a call back and found out there was no back up generator. She apologized profusely and suggested we could hang around and cheer on the runners if we wanted.
With defeat staring us in the face we had a Winston Churchill moment. I phoned a friend Steve Tremblay, who lived in a marina in false creek and had an industrial generator mounted in the back of his panel van. “Steve, we’re screwed. Can you help us?” At this point the first runners began passing by our silent tent jammed with unused musical equipment, looking at us with their hands held palms up in a “What the hell?” kind of gesture. It was agonizing.
Being a man of action, Steve jumped in his van, circumnavigated the race route and fifteen minutes after hanging up the phone was smooth talking his way past the cop at the Hemlock Street barricade. He screeched to a halt across the road, we ran a cable to his generator and BAM, we were live! Only thirty minutes late. As a bonus Steve, God bless him, brought his bandolier of harmonicas, and sat in with us for the gig.
