PINK UNITY

PINK UNITY

Pink Unity is a focus group for women cancer survivors, under the National Cancer Society of Malaysia

Pink Unity is formed based on the concept of "By survivors, for survivors " and premised on the believe that no one knows the myriad of emotions, insecurities, needs and wants of women cancer survivors and newly-diagnosed cancer patients better than the survivors themselves. We are therefore different from other cancer organisations in that we are wholly run by women cancer survivors as a peer suppor

27th July 2024 Pink Blossom Sharing Session
A fantastic group of ladies turned up for this sharing session. There were 10 participants, 7 facilitators and 2 exco members were present. It’s one of our biggest groups in a long time.
Introduction about the sharing group was given by Valli and Ramuna then took over with an activity. Everyone was asked to write their name on a piece of paper creatively and to write a word about how they are feeling.
Next was the ice breaker session with Sim. Everyone was asked to open their phones to their wallpaper. Each person had to tell the group why they have that wallpaper on their phone. There were family photos, photos of pets, food, sceneries or nothing at all.
A little bit of exercise is good for you. Valli led this session and got us all to loosen up a bit.
Betty led us in reading out the group tradition and this was followed by Norbinah who got each participant to introduce themselves and what type of cancer they have.
The sharing part was facilitated by Heng. Our topic was to share with the group, one thing that touched our hearts during our cancer journey. Lots of touching and heart-warming stories were told. Family, friends and good neighbours giving support in lots of ways.
Refrehment time has always been a way to chat with new participants and catching up with friends. Noisy lot that we are - there was no end to our chatting.
To continue our sharing we had a game of human noughts and crosses. There was running, pushing and shouting. A lot of fun was had by all.
Approaching the end of our sharing we had feedback from all the participants. Everyone enjoyed themselves and many were glad that they had decided to join the sharing session. Now eager to join the next one!
The end of the sharing saw everyone stand up to sing ‘On Top Of The World’ and then it was bye, bye to everyone and see you all next time.
Valli, Betty and Mariana are the pioneers of Pink Unity’s sharing group. The group later named itself Pink Blossom. Our pioneers have worked hard and devoted their time to keep the sharing group going. After 9 years of Blossom, it’s time to get a new team in place. Time for others to take over. Today’s session was led by Heng as our chief facilitator and she had Ramuna, Norbinah and Sim to help, with the guidance of our pioneers. The new team will take on Blossom moving forward. They did a good job today.
Next sharing date has yet to be confirmed.

Grief has no timeline. Some may start to heal relatively quick, while others may take a much longer period.

Grief is not something to be “overcome”. It is about the process of adjustment to a new reality.

We had our June's Brisk Walk on Saturday 29/6/24 at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, KL. 45 members inclusive of family & friends turned up.

The program kicked off at 7.30am with a warm up session lead by Umi on muscle exercise, goyang pinggul. Our president, Puan Mahani demonstrated a 360% body sway which would rid of the stubborn unhealthy fat on our body 😁

Members who couldn't do much due to weak knees, moved just like "c**a marba" not in line to the tune of the music, but hey, at least they tried! 💕

At 7.45am, we head off to our brisk walk lead by energetic Po-chien & Norbinah as sweeper. Salute to those who completed the walk, with or without opting for short cut, because we're blessed with super health to achieve the personal target each time.

All of us are treated with light refreshment in the park, courtesy of PU and a layer cake brought to us by Puan Haliza. We are always thankful to members who sometimes bring simple additional food to brisk walk.

After filling up our tummy, we geared up for quiz time - In conjunction with Cancer Survivors Month, Po-chien had prepared 10 cancer-related questions with prizes waiting for us. That was a fun learning session. Everyone, even the loosers, were happy.

Thank you to all participants and special thanks to PU awesome creative super heroes committee members who made each event successful & memorable. Adios.

On 29/6/2024 at the National Cancer Society Malaysia's Resource & Wellness Centre, Pink Unity held a beading class which was attended by 19 members and headed by two tutors, beloved Mariana Hussein and Yin Suit.

It was a fun and a wonderful lesson where members learned a simple looping technique. With some practices, everyone managed to make themselves a bracelet with a pair of earrings each. The ladies were hoping for more fun time beading together in the future.

Pink Unity’s sharing group Pink Blossom held its graduation event at Tasty Chapati in Subang Jaya on 23rd June.
During the MCO period, meetings were held via Zoom and graduation events was not possible. We are now back to being able to operate as normal.
Members who have attended 6 sharing sessions are awarded recognition as graduates. They are then introduced to other programmes that Pink Unity organise.
Today’s lunch event was attended by graduates, facilitators and exco members.
Heng who was one of the organisers, welcomed everyone. This was followed by a minute of silence as we remembered those members who have passed on. NK Valli the chief facilitator of Blossom’s sharing sessions gave a speech thanking everyone for having made the effort to attend.

Lunch was served and there was lots of catching up to do. Members were asked to report to the group as to how they felt they have benefitted from the sharing sessions. No one was shy this afternoon. Everyone shared how they have grown from being a member.

It was encouraging and inspiring to hear each member voiced how they had benefitted from joining the sharing group. Members who couldn’t open up because of shyness and lack of confidence have now blossomed and do not hesitate now to speak in front of the group and sharing their experiences and anxiety.

Be it forming new friendships, improving your social life and learning new skills, every individual has bloomed. Now our message to our new graduates is to forge forward and carry the message to future survivors. Joining a sharing group helps to lessen your burden and we learn from hearing the experiences and stories of others.

A token was given to each graduate. Lots of pictures were taken and we ended the lunch with Bollywood dancing.

It was a lovely lunch and hope it won’t be too long before we see each other again.

Pink Unity Fundraising Event 2024 Launching of PU Scarves on 19 June 2024
Good News – Pink Unity is raising funds through the launch of two newly produced PU scarves, the first batch generously donated by Dr. Stitch Sdn Bhd (owned by member Anna Chong’s family).
A scarf design competition open to all Pink Unity members was held in May 2024. At closing, eleven members, namely Chuah Lay Lian, Rosalind Tan, Rozi Maria, Poh Choo, Fah Mei, Chooi Lan, Norbinah, Irene Chuah, Pauline Chin, Saro, and Umi Purwati submitted 20 entries. These designs were sent to Dr. Stitch Sdn Bhd (The Sponsor) for their selection; five designs were picked. The final winners of the black and white scarves were chosen by NCSM in-house designers.
Today, 19 June 2024, the scarves freshly printed are formally handed over to Pink Unity by Anna Chong representing Dr. Stitch Sdn Bhd to President Mahani Kassim. We thank Dr. Stitch Sdn Bhd for again supporting Pink Unity in our projects. As our token of appreciation, President Mahani handed over a CIP Art piece painted by Poh Choo.
This first batch of scarves is donated to Pink Unity towards the 2024 fundraising/merchandise sales. A set of two scarves will be sold for RM75.00, whereas any one scarf will be sold for RM39.00 each.
At the launch, the winners were announced and presented with a cash token; Rosalind Tan is the winner of the white scarf and Chooi Lan, the winner of the black scarf. Chooi Lan also won a consolation prize along with Irene Chuah and Umi Purwati. Congratulations to all winners, and tokens of appreciation were presented to all designers for their time and effort.
This launch of the scarves is very timely as we will be selling them at the Cancer Care Survivor and Caregiver Symposium in conjunction with National Cancer Congress Malaysia 2024 on 21 June 2024 at Sunway University. Another venue for our booth sales will bet on 26 June 2024 at Nexus International School’s Party in the Park (No. 1 Jalan Diplomatik 3/6 Presint 15, 62050 Putrajaya). We look forward to all our members’ and public support for Pink Unity scarves.

On a Saturday afternoon, 17 dedicated members of Pink Unity gathered eagerly for another enriching workshop: The Quilling Workshop.

By 1:30pm, many had already arrived at the National Cancer Society Malaysia. The atmosphere was lively, filled with warm greetings, cheerful conversations, and updates on recent activities.

At 2 PM sharp, we were introduced to our special guests for the workshop, Mr. Chow and his wife Karen, the founders of Quilljoy Endeavours. Mr. Chow began by explaining the art of paper quilling (kertas gulung in Bahasa). Each participant received a starter kit containing colorful papers, glue, and a quilling tool.

We started by learning five basic shapes and then moved on to creating flower petals and leaves. Though a bit clumsy at first, practice soon led to perfection. By the end of the session, everyone had crafted beautiful, creative flowers from the vibrant papers.

This workshop was not only a wonderful opportunity for members to meet up but also an empowering experience, equipping us with the new skill of paper quilling. It was truly an eye-opener for many of us.

Kudos to Pink Unity for organizing such a fantastic event!

30 members of the Pink Unity of NCSM had the priviledge of spending a night at the Mantin Forest Art Farmstay courtesy of the owner, the gorgeous Datin Alice Chai.

We reached at 3pm and were treated to tea with fried bee hoon and delicious fried cempedak. Some members spent their time kayaking, playing mahjong, swimming while others spent it exploring and taking in the splendid view of the lake and its surroundings.

Some were even fortunate to witness the birth of a fawn by the resident doe.
After a sumptuous dinner, of steamed and fried fish, steamed chicken, an assortment of salad and vegetables and their own version of 'chawanmushi' washed down with a special barley drink, we did some karaoke and line dance.

The next day after breakfast we went on a hike and proceeded to check out the farm animals. There are goats, horses, rabbits, a variety of marmosets and exotic birds.

Upon checking out, we were treated to lunch.
We left, after buying jackfruit from the establishment, feeling a little tired but elated with the lovely time shared with fellow survivors.

Pink Unity had a meet-up session with Leslie, the owner of Variante, on 4 June 2024 at Pearl Condominium to discuss Variante’s program for Pink Unity during Breast Cancer Awareness Month this year.

As usual, one of the highlights for Pink Unity members every year during Breast Cancer Awareness Month is with Variante. During the meetup, Leslie announced that proceeds from VARIANTE sales in October will be donated to Pink Unity.

He graciously shared his inspiration from the world of Nature for his designs with the PU EXCO. After his explanation, we had a practical session to come up with beautifully colored designs based on the sketches he provided. We were also asked to create designs inspired by nature.

Hopefully, Variante will incorporate our creativity into their new collection for October! We also discussed with Leslie the possibility of designing PU attire. Looking forward to seeing the beautiful creations for our gorgeous PU ladies.

Tentatively, Leslie informed us that Variante’s event for Pink October will be launched on 26 September.

MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION 2024

Mother’s Day is a special day honouring mothers and mother-figures. The idea of celebrating Mother’s Day started in America. Anna Javis was an American woman held a small memorial service for her own mother on 12th May 1907. Then, most places started observing this special day and now it’s celebrated in lots of countries throughout the world.
Pink Unity celebrated it’s very own unique Mother’s Day celebration at The Pearl, Jalan Stonor yesterday evening. ( 31st May 2024). The organizing team led by Puan Norbinah and her lovely committee members managed to create positive energy ,laughter and fun plus relishing the moment eating scrumptious food which was brought by each ladies .
We started off by introducing a few new members to our lovely ladies . They were Correen, Kuna ,Jamilah ,Seiw Fun and Shanty. They were thrilled to be part of our Pink Unity team and it would be a great opportunity for them to mingle and meet our existing ladies. There were also some old members whom came back and join this beautiful event. We hope the new and the old members would be able to continue the spirit of volunteerism and able to get a plethora of information to navigate their journey well.
There were a cake cutting ceremony and a few games that really made all the ladies mind to think , to observe , to listen and to act quickly as possible to shout out the name. One particular game we played was BINGO. Many of us managed to recall back on how to play the game and some were very new to this game. However, Fe with the help of Senggol managed to conduct the game with ease. Kak Aini was one of the players whom had won almost three times in a row and it was very cute to see her screaming of joy when she received her presents. Senggol on the hand was the winner for a game called ‘ Guess Who Am I’. She definitely had a great observation skills on guessing the old young pictures of our few beautiful ladies.
The climax of the event was recognising and appreciating the effort of a few mothers in Pink Unity. We were ecstatic when Madam Poh Choo ( PC) was announced as the ‘Tokoh Ibu’ followed by Kak Umi and Puan Norbinah. It was really touching and they were marvellous indeed.
Almost 50 participants had a lovely and wonderful day spent together. All of us hope ,this lovely function will be held annually whereby it would be a great chance to meet, to reflect , to relax and may be it will ignite a spark between ladies to begin a new adventure. As usual ,Pink Unity trademark was to make sure each whom attended an event won’t be leaving with empty hand. All of us went back home at least a door gift , a stalk of carnation flower and a prize.
Happy Mother’s Day 2024.

Prepared by : Madam Ramuna.

The talk on "You Are What You Eat," held on June 1, 2024, at NCSM, was attended by 21 Pink Unity members. The speaker's emphasis on understanding nutrient labels of food and making informed food choices was particularly enlightening. The knowledge imparted will undoubtedly help many of us lead healthier lives.

Ms. Stefanie Bhairavi Jaya Balan also stressed the importance of identifying hidden ingredients. She explained how nutrient labels reveal hidden sugars, unhealthy fats, and artificial additives that might not be immediately apparent.

NCSM would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Ms. Stefanie Bhairavi Jaya Balan for her insightful and engaging talk on "You Are What You Eat." Her expertise and passion for the subject were evident, and we truly appreciate the valuable information and practical advice she shared.
