Urgent Appeal: Gaza Family Seeks Refuge and Hope Amidst Devastation

Hello, my dear friends,

I hope this message finds you well. My name is Nabil Elyazji, and I am reaching out to you with a heavy heart from the Gaza Strip, Palestine. At 28 years old, I am married to my wonderful wife Lulu, and we are parents to a beautiful one-year-old baby.

As you may be aware, our lives have been marred by unimaginable hardships. Since October 7, we have been enduring the harsh realities of genocide, starvation, violent bombings, and a severe lack of resources, including essential food and clean drinking water. The situation has forced us to flee our home more than 12 times due to relentless bombings, displacing us and destroying civilian blocks, leaving us utterly homeless.

In the midst of this turmoil, we are desperately seeking refuge, hoping to provide a decent and peaceful life for our family. Our dream is to find safety and stability for our little one and create a future filled with hope.

I am reaching out to you, dear friends, with a humble plea for support. In the short term, your donations will be used for basic survival necessities like food and water, helping us weather the immediate challenges we face.

Looking ahead, we aim to utilize the funds for the long-term goal of seeking asylum. We are exploring the possibility of asylum in countries such as Scotland or Canada, where we hope to find safety and build a new life for our family. Your generous contributions will go towards the necessary expenses involved in the asylum process, travel arrangements, and the establishment of a new life.

Your compassion and kindness can make a world of difference in our lives, providing a glimmer of hope in the midst of darkness. We are immensely grateful for any support you can offer, whether it's through a donation or by sharing our story with your network.

Thank you from the depths of our hearts for considering our plea. Your generosity has the power to change our lives and create a new beginning for our family.

With sincere gratitude,
Nabil Elyazji and Family

Although I love Kelantan's distinctiveness from the United States and other Malaysian states, there are a few downsides.

Kelantan is an agrarian state with green paddy fields, rustic fishing villages and casuarina-lined beaches. People lead a rural lifestyle here. Kelantanese culture is distinguished from Malay culture in the rest of the peninsula; this is reflected in the cuisine, arts and the unique Kelantanese dielect. The dielect is different enough that those who speak it have difficulty understanding standard Malay in local broadcasts. Relative to the rest of Malaysia, Kelantan, in it's isolation, is a world onto itself. Kite flying is a confirmed tradition here, and on most dry days, you can hear the distinct "singing" of a large Kelantanese kite flying above.

Kelantanese people are friendly, kind, and helpful in a way a New Yorker could truly appreciate. Last night, for example, I went into a local mart and after making a few purchases, I reached in my pocket for my keys and they were gone! I retraced my steps and still couldn't find them. I told a worker and she summoned 5 employees who combed through the store looking for my keys. I ended up finding them under a shelf, but these people had my back 100%. In America, the attitude would more likely be, "that's your problem, dude! Good luck finding them!"

Now for some downsides. As consumers, folks from developed countries take for granted easy access to products and services. In America, for example, when you go to a hardware store for something specific in mind, you'll reliably find it. You seldomly hear the phrase "out of stock" and in the rare instances you do, you'll have it in a matter of days. The idea of inconveniences doesn't occur to you until you move to a rural part of a developing country.

Here's what really kills me though: There's zero access to Western-trained chiropractors in Kelantan. They do have traditional practitioners who do assisted stretching and some boilerplate spinal adjustments but, in my experience, they're not effective. By that I mean that I leave with the same issues (pain and muscle adhesions). It's as if the adjustment didn't occur.

Amusingly, they bring some theatrics to the work by yelling while they do adjustments. This is a bit of a surprise at first. It gives it a kind of Qi-energy vibe, but it doesn't necessarily fix your subluxation. This means you suffer for months until you can get to Kuala Lumpur or places that attract expatriates
(e.g., Penang Island). There, you can access chiropractors trained at Australian universities and colleges.

On Chiropractic arts and science, it seems that the West is the best. Chiropractic medicine is well established in North America and Canada and I know from experience that it makes a world of difference. inevitably, we all could use a chiropractor. I'd imagine there's scores of Kelantanese folks who have suffered needlessly with back and neck pain for decades not knowing that it could have fixed with 2 or 3 adjustments in the course of 1-2 weeks. That's unfortunate. Despite my grievances, I love Kelantan..

I visited Cusco, Peru in 2014. Seeing the indigenous (Inca) children and ancient Inca ruins of Cusco and Machu Picchu was an unforgettable experience. As a 9 year old girl dressed in bright red, yellow, and green indigenous garb scaled up a steep rockface, I yelled, "get down!" The tour guide consoled me and explained that the kid had things under control. It was just a routine, high-altitude and potentially deadly trek to class for a village girl. I used to dread New York winters and Long Island traffic, but this experience put it all into perspective for me. As my lack of gratitude rose in my consciousness, I was immediatly humbled:
Man, we can take so much for granted.

I found this precious, little nugget in Cusco, Peru in 2014. Seeing the indigenous (Inca) children and ancient Inca ruins of Cusco and Machu Picchu was an unforgettable experience. As a 9 year old girl dressed in bright red, yellow, green, and blue indigenous garb scaled up a steep rockface, I yelled, "get down!" The tour guide consoled me and explained that the kid had things under control. It was just a routine, high-altitude trek to class for a village girl. I used to complain about New York snow and Long Island traffic, but this experience put things into perspective.

In our last ESL class at Creative School, students viewed an inspirational story involving a charitable donation made by action film star Dwayne Johnson (aka the Rock).

Our ESL students discussed the film, talked about the English language idioms they encountered in the film and were asked to describe what they themselves would do if they suddenly attained 1 million RM. Inspired by the altruistic story they just viewed, this is what they said...

We shall never forget when Mat Kilau asked for Mat Salleh's autograph! Just kidding. Adi Putra is a nice guy. He stopped and took time to talk to fans. He's just like a Malaysian - super friendly and sweet! That's why this New Yorker is in love with Malaysia ♡ The people and the culture are beautiful and kind.
