HH Lama Sonam Zangpo (1888-1982) is a widely celebrated spiritual luminary who exemplified both the Drukpa Kagyu school and Nyingma traditions. He was a direct disciple of Drubwang Shakya Shri, who specialized in great Mahamudra and Six Yogas of Naropa. He was Garab Rinpoche and Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche's maternal grandfather and teacher.
Lama Sonam Zangpo’s consort was Ani Dendup Pelmo and he had two daughter Semo Jamyang Choden and Semo Tshering chokey.

HH Dungse Thinley Norbu's wife was Semo Jamyang Choden and like his parents they had seven children, three daughters and four sons.

Semo Kelsang Chodron, Dzongsar Khyentse Norbu Rinpoche (b.1961), Semo Yeshe Palzom (b.1966), Garab Dorje Rinpoche(b.1967), Jampel Dorje Rinpoche (b.1968), Semo Pema Chokyi (b.1976), and Se Ugyen Namgyal.
