Most self-taught developers don't know the method or paradigms of programming they practice, most of them get entangled using different methods and principles which results to confusion. In this post I would be explaining the most important programming paradigms a developer should know and their subsets.

As a developer you need to know the principles of programming so you can write cleaner codes and get your results faster. So there are to major Programming Paradigms and they are:

Declarative Programming

Imperative Programming

Declarative Programming: This method is commonly practiced by self-taught developers. It is the process by which you write codes to complete a certain task without giving a procedure on how to complete it.

Declarative Codes looks more like commands you give to the computer,

and Declarative Codes can make you have a lot of bugs and errors, because there is no control flow or sequence. Declarative Programming has some subsets and they are Logical Programming and Functional Programming. Think of it like this Declarative Programming acts like a dictator 😅. Though Declarative Programming seems faster, you would spend most of your time fixing bugs and errors.

Imperative Programming: This is not commonly practiced and it used for building large scale softwares so as to eliminate the threat of having bugs and errors. This is the process by which you write codes to achieve a given task with a sequence and procedure on how to get there, it is the opposite of Declarative Programming. Imperative Programming works with a control flow and it has a higher success rate.

It works with procedures more than it works with logic. It has some subsets which are common among developers and they are Procedural programming and Object Oriented Programming. You can think of Imperative Programming as an Instructor. 😅
