WHAT IS A GAMING LAPTOP?
A gaming laptop is a small and mobile personal computer, which has its own built-in screen and is specifically designed to enable gaming on the move and in spaces where you don’t have access to a desk.

At their core, they’re the same as standard or business laptops, but with plenty of upgraded features – it’s these upgraded features which make all the difference and allow users to game.

In a nutshell, a gaming laptop gives you get high-performance speeds, substantial memory capacity, triple-A graphics, and fast processing power.

These laptops are designed and manufactured specifically with advanced gaming needs in mind, so that you can go into battle armed with the power you need to smash the competition, no matter if they’re human or AI.

With high-end hardware included, gaming laptops are generally much more expensive than entry-level laptops, but they offer a substantial upgrade for even basic laptop functions.

WHAT ARE THE KEY PARTS IN A GAMING LAPTOP?
There are four primary aspects of a gaming laptop. The operating system, screen size, processor, and graphics card, but there are plenty of other features you’ll want to consider as well if you’re thinking of buying one.

Modern computer games generally require additional processing power for them to run smoothly, and one of the most significant differences between a standard laptop and a specialist laptop for gamers is video processing.

Gaming computers have a video card, which is a PC component used to enhance the quality of images shown on a screen. They also have their own dedicated RAM, a GPU, and a cooling system, whereas a typical PC generally uses an onboard graphics controller and fans instead.

So, in simple terms, a laptop that’s designed for gaming contains additional power and has all the attributes needed to play games in high quality and at high speeds.

Below are all the parts you’ll need to consider in a laptop for gaming, and what their function is.

THE OPERATING SYSTEM
The operating system (OS) is one of the most important aspects of any laptop. Not only does it allow you to run your computer, but it determines what games you can actually play.

This means that certain games you want to play might not be playable on your system, so it’s worth checking out which games you can play on which laptop before you spend any of your money.

There’s nothing more frustrating than buying a gaming computer and not being able to play the game you’ve actually bought it for!

THE GRAPHICS CARD
The graphics card, or GPU (Graphics Processing Unit), is perhaps the most important component in your gaming laptop after the operating system, as it allows games to be played with higher graphics settings and with more visual effects enabled.

It delivers the images on your screen by processing the data and transmitting the signal to the monitor. Due to how stressful this process can be when running games, you’ll likely need a GPU with its own dedicated memory, called VRAM (video memory).

A 9th or 10th generation Nvidia graphics card will do everything you need to ensure you can game at the level you want to.

As for memory, most people will tell you that when it comes to memory, “the more the better” but the truth is that the average gaming enthusiast should be able to do everything they want with 4GB of VRAM. But 6GB would be even better.

Of course, there’s no need for you to get bogged down with tons of technical detail. When your laptop arrives it’s all ready to turn on and play.

THE SCREEN
It’s common sense, if you’re playing some earth-shattering game with brilliant graphics and sound effects, that you’ll want to experience the action on the biggest screen size available in whichever format you decide to go for.

While a gaming laptop screen will be more than adequate for most gaming experiences, if you’re so inclined, you can link a bigger screen to your laptop via an HDMI cable.

The only downside to this is that performance might be affected, and if you were going to do that, you might as well just buy a desktop PC instead.

PERIPHERALS AND EXTRAS
Any gaming laptop is expected to support additional options which a standard laptop may not. Your laptop should be able to accept peripherals, such as a headset and a wireless mouse, often connected via USB ports and Bluetooth cards.

A gaming laptop should also be able to connect to the internet and to LANs (local area networks), usually through Wi-Fi and Ethernet, so you can game wherever you need to.

INTERNAL COOLING
Unlike standard laptops, gaming laptops have improved cooling options, such as better venting or more powerful fans. Since hardware pushed to its limits for long periods of time will generate significant heat, especially when playing high-end games, laptops need to be equipped with the means to keep themselves cool.

WHAT IS IPS IN A GAMING LAPTOP?
IPS stands for ‘in-plane switching’, screen technology that enables you to see a wider range of colours and display graphics in greater detail. Having an IPS panel in your laptop is recommended for the best gaming experience.

WHAT IS G-SYNC?
No, it’s not the name of a boyband. G-Sync is a piece of NVIDIA tech housed in certain high-performance laptops to increase their performance, with a focus on reducing input lag and eliminating screen tearing.

AMD’s FreeSync also does the same job and both G-Sync and FreeSync offer even faster rendering without introducing stuttering into the mix.

What is a motherboard?
A motherboard is a computer's main printed circuit board (PCB). The motherboard is a computer's central communications backbone connectivity point, through which all components and external peripherals connect.

Motherboards can be found in virtually all computers, especially desktops and laptop PCs. The components that connect through them include chipsets, central processing units (CPU), and memory. The external peripherals include Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and graphics cards with the graphics processing unit or GPU.

Motherboard manufacturers include Acer, ASRock, Asus, Gigabyte Technology, Intel, and Micro-Star International.

How do motherboards work?
The PCB of a large motherboard may include six to 14 layers of fiberglass, copper connecting traces, and copper planes for power and signal isolation. Other components get added to a motherboard through expansion slots. These include processor sockets; dual in-line memory modules; Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI), PCI Express (PCIe), and solid-state drive M.2 slots; as well as power supply connections.

A heatsink and fan manage the heat components such as the CPU generate. Typically, motherboards offer additional connectivity through Southbridge chips such as PCI, Serial Advanced Technology Attachment or SATA, Thunderbolt, USB, and other interfaces.

The CPU is generally connected to double data rate 3 (DDR3), DDR4, DDR5, or onboard LPDDRx RAM and PCIe. This is done through point-to-point interconnects such as HyperTransport, Intel's QuickPath Interconnect, and Ultra Path Interconnect. Choosing a motherboard often determines many features a computer will support.

Motherboard designs in desktop computers typically are the ATX motherboard, which is Intel's improved version of IBM's AT design. Other form factor designers include the following:

extended ATX
mini-ATX
micro ATX
BTX
micro BTX
mini-ITX
micro ITX
nano-ITX
Some memory controllers are now built into CPUs; which has eliminated the Northbridge chips that provided memory management from the motherboard. The integrated video has moved from a motherboard-slotted peripheral to graphics-enabled CPUs.

Motherboard components
Each motherboard is designed to support specific components, such as CPUs and memory. They can accommodate most types of hard drives and peripherals.

Motherboards include the following primary components:

CPU with its logic circuitry that processes the instructions from programs, the operating system, and other computer components;
memory where instructions and data are temporarily stored and executed;
storage interface for solid-state or hard disk drive for persistent data and application storage;
ROM BIOS provides non-volatile memory that stores firmware, such as the basic input/output system or BIOS;
Northbridge chipset that connects CPU, memory, storage, and other components;
Southbridge chipset that connects peripheral elements to the motherboard and connects to the Northbridge;
cooling fans that maintain a suitable internal operating temperature;
peripheral connector slots for plugin peripheral cards, such as graphics and communications adapters;
connectors for peripheral devices such as USB ports and other connectors for external devices;
the backup battery that ensures key system configuration data is maintained when main power is unavailable; and
the power connector, connecting to an external power source.
Many other elements comprise a typical motherboard. Think of a motherboard as a large mosaic of electrical connections linking the various parts of a computer.

Taking proper care of your laptop’s battery is important for ensuring your mobile machine can run as long as possible. Although battery technology has evolved in the background, outdating “best practices” from a few years ago, there are still a number of ways you can extend (or reduce) your laptop battery’s health. We’ve rounded up the top tips for how to care for your laptop’s battery, from how long you should leave it plugged in to how low you should let the battery drain.

So, where do you start? You can begin by visiting the power settings corner of your laptop and learning how your battery works and what battery settings to enable. Also, pay attention to hibernation modes. Ideally, you want your laptop to enter into hibernation before the battery is totally drained — as well as during downtime when you won’t be using the laptop for a while.

To save even more power, take a tour of your apps and quit any that are running in the background and steadily eating into your battery life. On Windows 10, for example, we suggest you search for and enable the Battery Saver. This mode will automatically turn on when your laptop reaches around 20% battery life (more down below on why this is particularly important). This will automatically block background apps, keep your features like Calendar from syncing or pushing notifications, lower screen brightness, and other various changes that will conserve your battery so you can get to an outlet ASAP.

For MacBooks, look into enabling Power Nap so you can put your Mac to sleep without worrying about it skipping important tasks, allowing you to save more battery life. Enabling automatic graphics switching can also help Macs save energy by switching to a lower graphics mode when engaged in simple tasks (like text-based work where graphics aren’t as important).

There are plenty of manual changes you can make here, too. You can safely shut down things like cloud storage and messaging applications that may be running in the background. You can also manually reduce the amount of power you’re using by shutting off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when you’re not using them, turning off optional features such as keyboard backlighting, and generally reducing the number of components burning power. Both Microsoft and Apple have guides explaining the process further.

Next, there was a time when users were advised to refrain from keeping their devices plugged in, based on the idea that letting a battery charge to 100% could wear the battery out more quickly. Today, however, modern devices are designed to stop charging at 100%, so keeping them plugged in doesn’t impact the battery’s lifespan, according to Battery University.

As with many battery-related questions, the issue of keeping your laptop plugged in when it’s reached full capacity is hotly debated, so there’s nothing wrong with turning your machine off and unplugging it if you feel more comfortable doing that. But generally speaking, the best thing you can do for your lithium-ion battery is to avoid letting it discharge below 20%. Plug it in and charge it when you can, and then rinse and repeat. The good news is that with modern batteries and systems, there’s really not much else you need to do — outside of anticipating that your battery will eventually start losing its overall capacity.

Finally, if you’re going to store your laptop for an extended time without using it, then discharge or charge it to 50% before putting it away.
When a laptop battery gets too hot, the electrochemical reactions inside speed up — but that doesn’t mean that the battery grows more efficient. Instead, the battery is now producing lots of energy that it cannot use and cannot safely route to any hardware. This creates even more heat, compounding the problem. Not only can this eventually damage the inside of the battery permanently, but it also wears the battery out with a bunch of chemical reactions that aren’t necessary but burn through a battery’s lifespan anyway.

Likewise, keep the laptop off of your lap. If discomfort isn’t a good enough reason, with many machines, you’re also making the problem worse by blocking vents. You’ll want to make sure that both vents that pull in cool air and those that expel hot air are able to do their jobs.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, you should avoid placing your laptop anywhere it might become hot. That includes your car on a hot summer day, beneath a window that gets direct sunlight, or near a space heater. Unusual conditions such as these can do a lot of damage to a battery in a short period of time, though you may not realize it immediately.

Cold temperatures usually aren’t a problem down to a certain point, and storing a battery in a cool place is recommended, but don’t leave your laptop in freezing temperatures. Too much cold can also kill the battery permanently or reduce its lifespan.
