Answering your husband's name after marriage is not an Igbo culture but a borrowed one. Igbo women retain their maiden names. Some are addressed by using their children's names. Like "Mama Ifeanyị. Mama Nneka. Or Nne Ifeanyị. Nne Nneka".

Some are addressed as "nwunye Obi, nwunye Okonkwọ".

If the name of the wife is Ngọzi and that of her husband is Okonkwọ, she cannot be addressed as Ngọzi Okonkwọ in original Igbo culture. Instead, she could be called Ngọzi Obi, assuming Obi was her father's name. Some answer their mothers' names. In some culture of the Igbo, children take their mothers' names. This happened mostly in a polygamous family where a man has many children from different women. To recognise which of the woman owns each child, every child is called after his mother. For instance, if the boy is Emeka and his mother is Adaobi. He would be addressed as Emeka nwa Adaobi. This will happen before his father's name will be mentioned. Even when you mention his father first, your listeners will ask you which of his wives gave birth to him.

Let me not digress. In Igbo culture, you don't marry a wife and make her take your name because you are the head of the family. We have a different worldview. This is alien.

My grandfather's name is Ogudu Ogo Okoro Anaga. My grandmother, who was his wife until death bore: Ọbaji Nwaigbo Ụnaegwu. You wonder why her name didn't change to Ọbaji Ogudu Ogo immediately she married my grandfather. I can mention as many names as possible of women of the past who maintained their maiden names.

Originally, oriakụ in Igbo lexicon never meant mrs......Men also answered and still answering Oriakụ in Igbo land. The foreign influence as well as language and religion brought about the foreign culture we have assimilated as ours today. A lot of acculturation has taken place.

It was hard to have an equivalent of exact translation of "Mrs" in Igbo as there was no word or lexical place of it in Igbo language. They used "oriakụ" to replace it which to me doesn't sit well.

Igbo women were never just oriakụ, but hardworking set of people providing for their various homes and also supporting their husbands.

If I should write about the typical Igbo women, pre-colonial Igbo women, you will be marveled that some things the western world is fighting for as the rights of women had been taken care of in this part of the world mgbe elu ka bụ ala ọsa. Igbo women were never weaklings and totally dependants on men for ego nnu na ose. Strong women. They work hard. They create wealth without going about looking for men to fund them. Their roles during the wars?

HOW APC WON ANAMBRA STATE GOVERNMENT: The long awaited Anambra state election has come and gone and so much thanks to the members of INEC and other stakeholders that ensured that a credible leader emerged. Congratulations 👏 to Professor Charles Soludo of the APGA for being the winner of the governorship election and congratulations 👏 to APC for gaining over sixty percent of the state house of Assembly thereby giving APC a structure in Anambra state and if politics is allowed to play good, APC has greater political control of Anambra state presently thereby placing PDP below them in the leadership of Anambra state which was earlier controlled by the PDP at the beginning of this democratic dispensation of Nigeria before it was taken over by APGA due to the corrupt nature of PDP.
The rooted structure of APC in Anambra state has increased the structure of the southeastern states in APC thereby connecting the zone to the centre the more knowing that the zone has five states of which Ebonyi and Imo state are controlled by APC, Abia and Enugu are of the PDP while Anambra is APGA/APC knowing that the state house of Assembly which is the engine room of the state political system is majorly controlled by APC and it is an outstanding achievement of APC after the Anambra state election that saw APGA as the winner mainly because it is hard to win a ruling party in politics of this part of the world which is one of the reasons for Igbo people to connect to APC which is a party at the centre in order to form stakeholder in decision of the party if we must make 2023 president of Igbo extraction a reality.
