Abia State Owes Us Three Years Leave Allowance
Disengaged Workers From Ebonyi Lament
By Ogochukwu Anioke
Ebonyi indigenes who were recently disengaged by the Abia state government have accused the state government of owing them three years leave allowance as well as their September salaries.
The disengaged Civil servants numbering about 80 also called on the Executive governor of their home state, Ebonyi, Chief Martin Elechi to come to their aid by re-absorbing them into the state civil service.
They made the call yesterday when they staged a peaceful protest to the government house in Abakaliki bearing placards lamented that the governor T.A Orji led administration disengaged them without paying them their September salaries just as they stated that they are being owed over three years arrears of leave allowance.
The protesters who carried placards with the inscriptions ‘A Sojourner has a home’, ‘we have come home for sense of belonging’, ‘Ebonyi state, salt of the nation, we embrace you’, East or West, North or South, Home is better’, Governor T.A. Orji says no to two dual citizenship.
One of the protesters Mrs Mariah Ogbonna who spoke to newsmen said they protesters where from the Aba zone of the state and were mostly teachers. She further said that they have not been paid their leave allowance for three years as well as their September salaries.
“The government of Abia State owes us three years leave allowance and our September salaries have not been paid” She said
Another disengaged worker, Mr Gloria Uche who was a Vice principal before her disengagement lamented the bad treatment meted out to them by the government of Abia state adding that have suffered untold hardship as a result of the disengagement.
According to her, “It has not been easy for us, we have suffered a lot, we have been borrowing money to pay our children’s school fees and to take care of our other needs”.
Spokesman for the group, Mr. Okoro Chibuike Uduma, pointed out that the reason they were disengagement was because the Governor of Abia State, Chief T.A Orji wanted to implement the payment of the new minimum wage for only indigenes of Abia state adding that most of them were disengaged from Abia state Local Government Education Authority,Local Government Areas among others.
His words: ‘‘we are public servant from Abia state. The Governor of Abia state said we have to come back to our state to enable him pay the new minimum wage. Before we knew it we were disengaged and that’s why we are here so that we can be reabsorbed into Ebonyi state civil service ‘
Abia state treated us as if we have no home by back loading all Abia state non-indigenes to their home state even those who have been working with them right from the old Imo state. We have our trust in the Almighty God and have accepted to return to our father land ingood faith since it is not a desert.
‘We sincerely plead with you to kindly bring back succour to our lives by accepting and redeploying your kith and Kin back to the public service and on time too to save us from untimely death and to tell Abia state that Ebonyi state is capable of taking care of their indigenes. The age long tradition of being our brothers keepers cannot
be abandoned’
Also, another protester, Mrs Kalu M.C from Ekoli Edda, Afikpo south local government area of the state, who had worked for 28 years in Abia state, stated that the disengagement plan executed by Abia state government placed them in hopeless situation.
‘We are helpless. They have removed our names since October this year and up till now we are just hanging. Since the Ebonyi government say it is a rumour and that they have not received any official letter from the Abia state government; that is why we are here to tell you people that it is not a rumour. It is real, we have been disengaged because Abia state government want to pay 18,000 minimum wage. That is the only reason we were disengaged’
The disengaged Ebonyi indigenes from Abia state were mostly from Ebonyi South and North senatorial district of the state. The Ebonyi state government was yet to issue any official statement on the matter as at press time. Ends
