Discharge of Ogun protest stray bullet victim: A case of best practices in hospital management

A victim of a stray bullet during the recent protest over fuel and naira scarcity in Abeokuta, Michael Gabriel, has been discharged from the Federal Medical Centre Idi-Aba Abeokuta after 16 days in the hospital.

The 27-year-old victim, who was shot at Sapon during the protest, was rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

Our correspondent reported that the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, visited the patient and took over the hospital bill.

Gabriel, a father of two, was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday.

The hospital’s Head, Public Relations and Information, Segun Orisajo, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, in Abeokuta.

Orisajo said, “Gabriel was rushed to the emergency unit of the hospital unconscious on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, following a stray bullet that hit him when pandemonium broke out at Sapon in Abeokuta over protests against naira and petroleum scarcity.

“Speaking in an interview after his discharge from the centre, Gabriel was full of thanks to God, the team of doctors, nurses and other health workers that worked round the clock to save his life, and the Medical Director, FMCA, Prof Adewale Musa-Olomu, for prompt mobilisation and the response of his personnel.

"They all worked hard to save my life. They gave me the best of care. If not for God and their quick intervention, I may not be alive today,’ he said.

“He equally expressed gratitude to Governor Dapo Abiodun and the Health Commissioner, Dr Tomi Coker, for their concern, care, and financial support and more importantly for visiting him on his sick bed.”

The hospital’s spokesman also quoted the medical director as describing Gabriel’s successful management, among several novel surgeries in the centre, as pointers to the imperativeness of transforming the centre into a teaching hospital.

“The latest professional manner in which we successfully managed the case of Gabriel gives us hope that this centre is on a worthy cause of becoming a teaching hospital,” he said.

Prof. Ajenifuja Kayode Olusegun
Prof Ajenifuja while presenting his papers on the topic Cervical Cancer: A preventable Deadly Disease at the second series of lectures to celebrate the 30th anniversary emphasized that the disease does not show any symptoms until it has progressed to the cancer stage, a process which takes years before manifesting.

He further said that the disease is a major public health problem in developing countries with an estimate of about 68,000 cases per year in Africa which leads to the death of women in the society, an occurrence that can cause loss of economic income and moral and educational values in children.

Prof Ajenifuja further noted that women with cervical cancer die a very miserable and painful death most of the time.

While speaking on preventive measures of the disease, he stated that it is one of few cancers that give ample time and opportunity for prevention because the cause, the pathway, and how it will end are known.

In his conclusion, Prof Ajenifuja urged women to get vaccinated against Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and go for regular screening to ascertain their health status.
