Mass prop. Preface of Lent IV

ENTRANCE ANTIPHON

The Lord heard and had mercy on me; the Lord became my helper.

COLLECT

Show gracious favour, O Lord, we pray, to the works of penance. We have begun, that we may have strength to accomplish with sincerity the bodily observances we undertake. Through our Lord.

-FIRST READING-

Is such the fast that I choose?

A reading from the Book of Isaiah (Isaiah 58:1-9a)

Thus says the Lord GOD. “Cry aloud, spare not, lift up your voice like a trumpet; declare to my people their transgression, to the house of Jacob their sins. Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as if they were a nation that did righteousness and did not forsake the ordinance of their God; they ask of me righteous judgements, they delight to draw near to God. ‘Why have we fasted, and you see it not? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you take no knowledge of it? ’Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure, and oppress all your workers. Behold, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to hit with wicked fist. Fasting like yours this day will not make your voice to be heard on high. Is such the fast that I choose, a day for a man to humble himself? Is it to bow down his head like a rush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? Will you call this a fast, and a day acceptable to the Lord? “Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh? Then shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up speedily; your righteousness shall go before you, the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry, and he will say, Here I am.”

The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm51:3-4.5-6ab.18-19(R.19bc)

R/. A broken and humbled heart, O God, you will not spurn.

Have mercy on me, O God,

according to your merciful love;

according to your great compassion,

blot out my transgressions.

Wash me completely from my iniquity,

And cleanse me from my sin. R/.

My transgressions, truly I know them;

My sin is always before me.

Against you, you alone, have I sinned;

What is evil in your sight I have done. R/.

R/. A broken and humbled heart, O God, you will not spurn.

For in sacrifice you take no delight;

Burnt offering from me would not please you.

My sacrifice to God, a broken spirit:

A broken and humbled heart,

O God, you will not spurn. R/.

VERSE BEFORE THE GOSPEL Amos 5:14

Glory and praise to you, O Christ. Seek good, and not evil, that you may live; and the Lord will be with you. Glory and praise to you, O Christ.

-GOSPEL-

“When the bridegroom is taken from them, then they will fast.”

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew (Matthew 9:14-15)

At that time: The disciples of John came to Jesus, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come, when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

TODAY’S REFLECTION

There is no doubt that fasting is a form of self-denial. It is willful refusal to eat food for the sake of a cause. Religious fasting is abstaining from food to show piety and commitment to God. It differs from fasting which some social activists could undergo to press down on their agitation. Such fasting is fasting as a protest. Some people could fast from food because of health reasons, such as some laboratory tests, and fasting to reduce obesity. Christian fasting however, should be borne out of love for God, and has to be accompanied with prayer. The disciples of John were used to fasting but were surprised that those of Jesus were not fasting; hence, they asked why they and the Pharisees fast, but not Jesus’ disciples, Jesus answered them in a dismissive way indicating a tone that there is a fundamental difference between his disciples and the rest.

PERSONAL DEVOTIONAL FOR LENT

We have a little time to stay on this earth and if we do not make use of our opportunities in the best possible way positively, we may leave the earth sad and unfulfilled. The essence of life is not what you own or have acquired, but how well you use what you have which is given to you by God to add value, inspire, enrich and empower others positively as you do to yourself.

Today, make sure you add value to someone’s life.

Let us Pray,

Lord Jesus, save me from inferiority complex, give me the courage to stand up and do what is right at all times even if it means losing face with the crowd. Amen.

PRAYER FOR NIGERIA IN DISTRESS

All powerful and merciful Father,
You are the God of justice, love and peace.
You rule over the nations of the earth.
Power and might are in your hands and no one can withstand you.
We present our country Nigeria before you.
We praise and thank you for you are the source of all we have and are.
We are sorry for all the sins we have committed
and for the good deeds we have failed to do.
In your loving forgiveness,
keep us safe from the punishment we deserve.
Lord, we are weighed down not only by uncertainties,
but also by moral, economic and political problems.
Listen to the cries of your people who confidently turn to you,
Our God of infinite goodness,
our strength in adversity,
our health in weakness,
our comfort in sorrow;
be merciful to us your people.
Spare this nation Nigeria from chaos, anarchy and doom.
Bless us with your kingdom of justice, love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

SECOND WEEK OF ADVENT TIME YEAR A
Vestment: Purple
Today’s Rosary: The Sorrowful Mysteries
St Lucy, V. M. (Memorial)

-FIRST READING-
A reading from the Book of Isaiah (Isaiah 48:17-19)
“O that you had listened to my commandments!”

Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am the Lord your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you in the way you should go. O that you had listened to my commandments! Then your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea; your offspring would have been like the sand, and your descendants like its grains; their name would never be cut off or destroyed from before me.”

The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM (Psalm 1:1-2.3.4 and 6 (R. see John 8: 12)
R. He who follows you, Lord, will have the light of life.

Blessed indeed is the man
who follows not the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the path with sinners,
nor abides in the company of scorers,
but whose delight is the law of the LORD,
and who ponders his law day and night. R

He is like a tree that is planted
beside the flowing waters,
that yields its fruit in due season,
and whose leaves shall never fade;
and all that he does shall prosper. R

Not so are the wicked, not so !For they,
like winnowed chaff,
shall be driven away by the wind.
For the Lord knows the way of the just,
but the way of the wicked will perish. R

ALLELUIA
Alleluia. Alleluia The Lord is coming,
run out to meet him; he is the prince of peace
Alleluia.

-GOSPEL-
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew (Matthew 11:16-19)
They listened neither to John nor to the Son of man.

At that time: Jesus said to the crowds, “To what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the market places and calling to their playmates, ‘We piped to you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.’ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon’; the Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

Today's Reflection
In the first reading those who fail to live in the way of the Lord are blamed. Their painful situation is due to the fact that they have abandoned the way of the Lord. The second reading exposes further the fate of those who fail to follow the Lord. They are always complaining, no matter what. At the end however, wisdom, which is the fear of the Lord, will vindicate the innocent. Lesson: stop complaining. Face reality and face your own existential situation, always trusting in the Lord.

Lord, grant that our thoughts, words and actions will always testify to the fact that the only way to be happy is to trust and obey.

Personal Devotional

- Our Father, I come to you as your child; please save me from all forms of attitude that makes me to pride about life.

- Guide me O Lord, with a humble and obedient spirit so that I will always seek you in simplicity of heart and mind in Jesus name.

Let Us Pray
Thanks be to you, my Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given me, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for me. O most merciful Redeemer, friend and brother, may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen.

Today's Saint (SAINT LUCY, Virgin and Martyr Memorial)
Lucy suffered martyrdom at Syracuse (Italy) probably during the terrible years of Diocletian’s persecution. She is a popular saint and patroness for those with eye disorders. It is fitting that we should celebrate her feast during Advent since the name, Lucy, means “light.” It reminds us of the light of Christ whose birth is drawing near. From antiquity her cult spread throughout the Church, and her name was therefore inserted into the Roman Canon.

SECOND WEEK OF ADVENT TIME YEAR A
Vestment: Purple
Today’s Rosary: The Luminous Mysteries
Our Lady of Guadalupe (opt mem)

-FIRST READING-
A reading from the Book of Isaiah (Isaiah 41:13-20)

I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, “Fear not, I will help you.” Fear not, you worm Jacob, you men of Israel! I will help you, says the Lord; your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel. Behold, I will make of you a threshing sledge, new, sharp, and having teeth; you shall thresh the mountains and crush them, and you shall make the hills like chaff; you shall winnow them and the wind shall carry them away, and the tempest shall scatter them. And you shall rejoice in the Lord; in the Holy One of Israel you shall glory. When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue is parched with thirst, I the Lord will answer them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them. I will open rivers on the bare heights, and fountains in the midst of the valleys; I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry lands springs of water. I will put in the wilderness the cedar, the acacia, the myrtle, and the olive; I will set in the desert the cypress, the plane and the pine together; that men may see and know, may consider and understand together, that the hand of the Lord has done this, the Holy One of Israel has created it.

The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM ( Psalm 145:1 and 9, 10-11, 12-13ab (R. see 8)
R. The Lord is kind and full of compassion, slow to anger, abounding in mercy.

I will extol you, my God and king,
and bless your name for ever and ever.
How good is the Lord to all,
compassionate to all his creatures. R

All your works shall thank you, O Lord,
and all your faithful ones bless you.
They shall speak of the glory of your reign,
and declare your mighty deeds. R

They shall make known your might
to the children of men,
and the glorious splendor of your reign.
Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom;
your rule endures for all generations. R

ALLELUIA
Alleluia. Alleluia. Shower, O heavens, from above, and let the skies rain down the just One; let the earth open, that it may bring forth the Saviour.
Alleluia.

-GOSPEL-
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew (Matthew 11: 11-15)

At that time: Jesus said to the crowds, “Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and men of violence take it by force. For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John; and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

The Gospel of the Lord.

Today's Reflection

In the first reading we see God lovingly directing Abraham to change his abode for safety and growth. In the second reading we are told that God works for good for those who love him. He takes care of them and predestines them. Consequently, in the Gospel we see the same directive from heaven for a change of abode so that the young Messiah will be safe. Finally, he lands in a safe home to be called a Nazarene. Lesson: we see God’s hand in protecting those who walk in his ways.

Lord, grant that sin shall never separate us from you, so that, like Mary, our Mother, we shall always be disposed and ready for your protective fatherhood.

Pesonal Devotional

- Lord, I am sorry for the times I have betrayed you through my character and actions, in the name of Jesus.

- Father, please give me the grace to live above sin, in the name of Jesus.

- In the name of Jesus, I break the stronghold of (mention the sin that dominates your life in my life.

- Father, please help other believers who have lost their Christian aroma, in Jesus name.

Let Us Pray
Gracious and holy Father, please give me: intellect to understand you, reason to discern you; diligence to seek you; wisdom to find you; a spirit to know you; a heart to meditate upon you; ears to hear you; eyes to see you; a tongue to proclaim you; a way of life pleasing to you; patience to wait for you; and perseverance to look for you. Grant me: a perfect end, your holy presence. A blessed resurrection, and life everlasti

OUR SAINT OF THE DAY; OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE
Devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe has reached various parts of the world. The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to a convert, Juan Diego (see December 9), who had a church built at Guadalupe in her honour. In this place Mary showed herself as a tender and compassionate Mother, reaching out to the poor and calling them to faith in Jesus Christ. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the Patroness of the Americas.

SECOND WEEK OF ADVENT TIME YEAR A
Vestment: Purple
Today’s Rosary: The Sorrowful Mysteries
Miltiades.

-FIRST READING-
A reading from the Book of Isaiah (Isaiah 40:1-11)
God comforts his people.

Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that her warfare is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins. A voice cries: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” A voice says, “Cry!” And I said, “What shall I cry?” All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the Lord blows upon it; surely the people is grass. The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand for ever. Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, fear not; say to the cities of Judah, “Behold your God!” Behold, the Lord GOD comes with might, and his arm rules for him; behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. He will feed his flock like a shepherd, he will gather the lambs in his arms, he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young.

The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM ( Psalm 96: 1-2.3 and 10ac.11-12a.12b-13)
R.The Lord our God comes with might.

O sing a new song to the Lord;
sing to the Lord, all the earth.
O sing to the Lord; bless his name.
Proclaim his salvation day by day. R

Tell among the nations his glory,
and his wonders among all the peoples.
Say to the nations, “The Lord is king.”
he will judge the peoples in fairness. R

Let the heavens rejoice and earth be glad;
let the sea and all within it thunder praise.
Let the land and all it bears rejoice. R

Then will all the trees of the wood shout for joy;
at the presence of the Lord, for he comes,
he comes to judge the earth.
He will judge the world with justice;
he will govern the peoples with his truth. R

ALLELUIA
Alleluia. Alleluia. The day of the Lord is near;
behold, he shall come to save us.
Alleluia.

-GOSPEL-
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke (Matthew 18: 12-14)
God does not will that the little ones should perish.

At that time: Jesus said to his disciples, “What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go in search of the one that went astray? And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. So it is not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

Today's Reflection
The first reading announces hope: the time of bo***ge is over. The second reading focuses on the joy that follows when one straying sheep is found. Likewise there will be joy in heaven at the repentance of even a single sinner. Consequently we are called upon to mend our ways for the coming of the Lord. We are all sinners but since our repentance adds to the joy of heaven let us in this Advent season turn away from sin and get ready for the coming of Emmanuel.

Lord, give us the courage to say no to sin so as to be ready not only for your birth but, more importantly, for our eventual birth into heaven.

Personal Devotional

- Pray for forgiveness of your sins before you go into prayer.

- Place your right hand on your infirmity/disease. Then make the following pronouncements:

You… (Name the affliction), you are a stranger in my body. No stranger can enjoy permanent residence, and so your stay in my body is hereby terminated in the name of Jesus Christ.

I, (name), therefore, standing on the word of God in Psalms 68:2, command you to melt as wax melts before fire in the name of Jesus Christ. (7x)

Let Us Pray
Through the power of your cross Lord Jesus, I now resist all forms of sin, sickness and disease.
I say to all forms of sickness and disease caused by my own disobedience, that you are not God’s will for my life, and I enforce the power of the cross upon you right now, by the shed Blood of the Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth, I command all forms of sickness and diseases to leave my body immediately.
Jesus bore my infirmities He was wounded for my transgressions, by his stripes I have been healed. No sickness, pain, death, fear or addiction shall ever be lord over me again. The penalty has been paid in full. I have been ransomed and redeemed, sanctified and set free. Amen.

Second Week of Advent Year B
Vestment: White
Today’s Rosary: The Joyful Mystery
St. Ambrose, B. D. (Memorial)

Entrance Antiphon Jer 31:10; Is35:4
Hear the word of the LORD, O nations; declare it to the distant lands: Behold, our Saviour will come; you need no longer fear.

Collect
May our prayer of petition rise before you, we pray, O Lord, that, with purity unblemished, we, your servants may come, as we desire, to celebrate the great mystery of the Incarnation of your Only-Begotten Son. Who lives and reigns with you.

-FIRST READING-
“God will come and save you.”
A reading from the Book of Isaiah (Isaiah 35:1 –10)

The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom; like the lily it shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the Lord, the majesty of our God. Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who are of a fearful heart, “Be strong, fear not! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God. He will come and save you.” Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then shall the lame man leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute sing for joy. For waters shall break for thin the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water; the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp, the grass shall become reeds and rushes. And a highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way; the unclean shall not pass over it, and fools shall not err therein. No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; they shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there. And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 85:9ab and 10. 11 -12.13-14(R. see Isaiah 35:4f)
R/. Our God will come and save us!

I will hear what the Lord God speaks;
He speaks of peace for his people and his faithful.
His salvation is near for those who fear him,
And his glory will dwell in our land. R.

Merciful love and faithfulness have met;
justice and peace have kissed.
Faithfulness shall spring from the earth,
and justice look down from heaven. R.

Also the Lord will bestow his bounty,
and our earth shall yield its increase.
Justice will march before him,
And guide his steps on the way. R.

ALLELUIA
Alleluia. Alleluia. Behold, the King is coming, the Lord of the earth, and he shall remove the yoke of our captivity. Alleluia.

-GOSPEL-
“We have seen strange things today.”
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke (Luke 5:17-26)

On one of those days, as Jesus was teaching, there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was with him to heal. And behold, men were bringing on a bed a man who was paralysed, and they sought to bring him in and lay him before Jesus; but finding no way to bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down with his bed through the tiles into their midst before Jesus. And when he saw their faith he said, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.” And the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, saying, “Who is this that speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God only?” When Jesus perceived their questionings, he answered them, “Why do you question in your hearts? Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you, ’or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins”— he said to the man who was paralysed—“I say to you, rise, take up your bed and go home.” And immediately he rose before them, and took up that on which he lay, and went home, glorifying God. And amazement seized them all, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, “We have seen strange things today.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

Today's Reflection

God wants you to begin this new working week with smiles and strong faith in him. So do not allow anything to rob you of that. Learn from the determination of the friends of this paralytic in Luke 5:18-26. The crowd proved to be an obstacle to them but they still found a way to reach Jesus through the roof. There can be a lot of crowds trying to prevent us from coming to Jesus. They can be in the form of doctor’s reports concerning an incurable disease or business that has refused to thrive despite efforts. Listen! St Paul says, even in the midst of all these, you are more than a conqueror (Rom 8:37)! May you conquer every spirit that would try to hinder your progress henceforth, through christ our Lord. Amen

Blessing for the New Week

Lord Jesus, I bless your name for giving me this day and for making me wake up from sleep strong and healthy. May your most Holy name be praised now and forever. Amen.

I offer to you all that we shall do today. Keep us safe, bless our families, favour the work of our hands and may your presence surround us and may it dispel and ward off every attack of the evil one.

Give me a faith that will be willing and ready to give a helping hand to others so that they will come to you and receive their blessings and miracles.Through my work may the sick be healed, the eyes of the blind be opened, the deaf hear, the dumb speak and those whose hope is lost find their way back to you O Lord. Make use of me to your own glory and may I become a channel of upliftment as I step out of my house today. May I be ready and willing to help others and in doing so may I never lack your help in my life. Amen.

It is a new day my dear friend, be positive in mind and heart, put in your best in what you do. Be kind to people, you will definitely receive God’s blessings and your testimonies will be sure at the end of the day.

May God’s help and glory rest upon you so that you will do good in his name. Amen.

Meditation: Isaiah 35:1-10 / Luke 5:17-26

Today's Saint and Quote
SAINT AMBROSE, Bishop and Doctor of the Church Memorial: Ambrose, a civil servant living in Milan (Italy) was unexpectedly chosen by the people to be their bishop when he was still a catechumen. After his ordination on 7 December 374, he carried out his ministry with great dedication and love. He wrote extensively in order to help the Christian community be strong in their faith, and to counteract the heresies of the Arians. He died in the year 397.

St. Ambrose of Milan – December 7th
A successful lawyer before becoming a bishop, he was one of the four original Doctors of the Church.

- No one heals himself by wounding another.

Personal Devotional

- Holy Father be thou, henceforth, my only treasure, make my heart not too anxious for the vain and fleeting things of this earth. Do not allow anything to separate me from you, in the name of Jesus.

- Grant me the grace my Father, to give up all things, to empty myself of all selfishness, so that your love may reign in me in the name of Jesus.

Let Us Pray
Jesus, your word declares that angels intervened in the lives of human beings. Father, I thank you for the hosts of heaven that are operating on my behalf. Make me sensitive to the existence and presence of angelic beings. There are more angels working for me than there are demons working against me. Lord, I thank you for opening my eyes to see the angelic hosts and chariots of fire circling my situations to fight on my behalf. In the name of Jesus, I release the angels of prosperity on my behalf. Because I walk before the Lord, the angels of the Lord will prosper my ways. Lord, I thank you for angelic intervention in my dreams. Let the same anointing that was on Jacob be on me to dream dreams of angels. Father, I thank you for your spiritual ladder that comes from heaven to the earth.

FIRST WEEK OF ADVENT TIME YEAR A
Vestment: Purple
Today’s Rosary: The Joyful Mysteries
St Ambrose, B. D. (Memorial)

-FIRST READING-
A reading from the Book of Isaiah (Isaiah 30:19-21.23-26)
“He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry.”

Thus says the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel: Yes, O people in Zion who dwell at Jerusalem; you shall weep no more. He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry; when he hears it, he will answer you. And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your Teacher will not hide himself any more, but your eyes shall see your Teacher. And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left. And he will give rain for the seed with which you sow the ground, and grain, the produce of the ground, which will be rich and plenteous. In that day your flock will be given pasture, and the lamb will graze in open fields; and the oxen and the donkeys that till the ground will eat salted food, which has been winnowed with shovel and fork. And upon every lofty mountain and every high hill there will be brooks running with water, in the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall. Moreover the light of the moon will be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day when the Lord binds up the hurt of his people, and heals the wounds inflicted by his blow.

The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM (Psalm 147: 1-2.3-4.5-6 (R. Isaiah 30: 18)
R/. Blessed are all those who wait for the Lord.
Or: Alleluia.

How good to sing psalms to our God;
how pleasant to chant fitting praise!
The Lord builds up Jerusalem and
brings back Israel's exiles. R/.

He heals the broken-hearted;
he binds up all their wounds.
He counts out the number of the stars;
he calls each one by its name. R/.

Our Lord is great and almighty;
his wisdom can never be measured.
The Lord lifts up the lowly;
he casts down the wicked to the ground. R/.

ALLELUIA Isaiah 33:22
Alleluia. Alleluia. The Lord is our judge,
the Lord is our ruler, the Lord is our king: he will save us.
Alleluia.

-GOSPEL-
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew (Matthew 9:35-10:1.5a.6-8)
“When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them.”

At that time: Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every infirmity. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.” And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every infirmity. These Twelve Jesus sent out, charging them, “Go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And preach as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleans lepers, cast out demons. You received without pay, give without pay.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

Today’s Reflection
The first reading points out the right road and urges us to go by it. The Lord will show his people the right way when they turn to the right or when they turn to the left. He will also provide for all their needs on their way. In the Gospel, Jesus, seeing the great need to share the good news, send his disciples on a mission and instructs them on how to show the right road to others. He reminds them that they have freely received and should consequently freely give.

Lord, help us to always walk on the right path as shown by you; give us the strength to be sharers in your mission of showing others the right way.

St. Ambrose of Milan – December 7th
A successful lawyer before becoming a bishop, he was one of the four original Doctors of the Church.
