Many things can go wrong in the development of a foetus causing birth anomalies. These anomalies are called congenital anomalies.
One of these conditions is syndactyly. This means that the digits(fingers or toes) are fused together at birth as seen in the first photo slide. It may be an isolated thing or may be associated with other anomalies.
Depending on the severity, it is possible to correct these anomalies with surgery as seen in the second photo slide.
Early correction is encouraged to allow the child integrate easily into school and society .
This child had a separation done with skin grafting as a single stage procedure. He has done well (see third photo slide).
Syndactyly may also occur following burns to the hands and feet if the management is inadequate.
