When my kids were tiny and I picked them up from primary school, they were elated to tell me every single detail about their days.

✨Who they sat next to at school.
✨What their teacher said.
✨What they worked on.
✨What they ate for lunch, if I hadn’t packed it that day.
✨Which kids were friendly and which were not.
✨What they thought about all day long (like whales! and tigers! and fairies!)
✨What they were excited about, and what they were worried about.

They each had so much to say that they would talk over each other in the car, to try to tell their full stories!

Sometimes it was exhausting to listen to so many things all at once… and I can’t count the number of times I had to organize the conversation so that each child got an equal amount of time to share.

But I loved those afterschool chats!

And I REALLY knew each of my kids.

These days I try hard to initiate conversations - at lunch, when driving, when they’re just ‘hanging around’ the house - but I also have had to learn when to step back.

When to stay quiet, and respect that my teens want space and privacy.

If you, like me, have teens that no longer seem to want to talk with you very often, here is a quick strategy that helps me stay peaceful and at ease… even when I’m essentially sitting alone (with kids right next to me) -

1. Picture yourself from the outside. Look at yourself as the world may see you; as someone new would see you, if they met you today.
2. Think about 3-5 qualities you possess that you really like. For example, you could think, “I like the way I smile at people when they sit down near me. I like that I’m friendly.”
3. Focus on appreciating those qualities in yourself, and think of them like gifts.
4. Consider who might enjoy receiving those gifts (like your friendliness) even if it isn’t your teens right now.
5. Create a plan for how you can give one of those gifts today. (E.g. “My own mom might appreciate if I reached out to her in a friendly way today!”)
6. Celebrate who you are. You’re amazing, Mama! No matter who’s talking to you :)
