Edo: No restriction of movement for Saturday’s LG polls, says Obaseki
BREAKING: Cameroon President, Paul Biya, makes key changes in the country's ministry of defense, hours after the successful coup in Gabon
Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has said despite several entreaties by his administration, the Federal Government has refused to allow the state government to fix dilapidated federal roads in the state.
Obaseki said this while addressing the congregation at the inauguration and enthronement of Ven. Ebenezer Omeiza Saiki as the second Diocesan Bishop of Akoko-Edo Diocese at St. James Cathedral, Ugbogbo, Igarra, in Akoko Edo Local Council the State.
The governor, who decried the deplorable state of the roads and the need for urgent intervention to ameliorate the sufferings of the people, called on residents and other road users to plead with the Federal Government to allow the state to fix the roads.
Speaking to the congregation, Obaseki said: “I promised His Royal Highness (HRH), the Otaru of Igarra, that I will be attending the Abba Festival as a special guest a couple of days ago. I actually was on my way, but no road to get there. So, I went back to Benin.
Investment in the housing sector in Edo State by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration received a boost yesterday following the certification of four outstanding real estate developers to boost the construction of standard and affordable housing units for Edo residents at Phase Two of the Emotan Garden City in Edo State.
Speaking to newsmen at the official handing over ceremony of the site to developers at the Emotan Gardens City in Upper Sokponba axis of Ikpoba Okha Local Council, Managing Director of the Edo State Development Property Corporation (ESDPC), Mr John Zedomi, noted that Emotan Garden City, which is the brainchild of the Governor Obaseki’s administration, has transformed the housing sector in the state, stressing that government’s investment in the sector is yielding remarkable dividends.
Governor Godwin Obaseki has called on residents of Edo State to help themselves by contributing to the development of the state, saying that the federal government has thrown the country into an economic crisis.
“The country is in crisis economically. We can’t continue to fold our hands and wait for a country that can’t help us. Rather, we will do all we can to help ourselves and our state,” Mr Obaseki said on Thursday in Benin at a workshop to discuss the implementation of the state’s new Land Use Charge Law, according to a statement forwarded to PREMIUM TIMES by Crusoe Osagie, the special assistant on media project to the Edo State Government.
President Bola Tinubu’s reforms – removal of petroleum subsidies and forex exchange liberalistaion – have continued to push up the price of goods and services in Nigeria, with the high inflation rate and the economic hardship causing unease across the country.
The Edo State Governor, Mr Obaseki said the state government has resorted to “taking care of those who can’t feed themselves” in the state.

A coalition in Edo State made up People’s Defender Advocate and civil society practitioners, yesterday, told the Governor Godwin Obaseki that it would oppose the imposition of any governorship candidate on the people in the forthcoming election in the state.
Convener of the group, Osadolor Ochei, said this in Benin while briefing journalists on the qualities of governor needed by the state in 2024.
“He must not be an imported governor who has not contributed to the development of Edo State in the time past,” Ochei said.
He said democracy and good governance are the bedrock of meaningful progress of every society and its people, and expressed position of the group on the political development of the state and to offer the way forward for the advancement of its people.
Ochei said the recent and ongoing unhealthy political developments in the state demanded that the group should state its position and determination to stem the tide and take the state away from an avoidable precipice.
Ochei added that though there is still a government in power in the state and giving the people good governance in the last months of the current government is sacred and should be of great concern to all of them but the raging battle cry mainly by the three senatorial districts of the state- south, central and north respectively, with everyone of them laying claims to the sole governorship seat and even issuing threats in the build-up to the 2024 governorship party primaries and the main election, has remained a great concern to the coalition.
Ochei further said that the bitter and determined agitations, which tend to be tribal and sectional, have widened the cracks of disunity even where they did not exist, thus setting the people of the state on a collision course.
He said group was determined to save the state from sn*******ng into further anarchy due to the agitation for power shift. The group advised that the different parties should jettison zoning in the primaries and main election by throwing the contest wide open for all the aspirants and to avoid tribal, religious and other primitive considerations.
He opined that the governor in the said election, must pass the litmus test of educational qualification that is well known and had contributed to the development of his hometown; vast in experience; has verifiable pedigree of performance in the private and public sectors and must not have criminal records.
He also said that the person eyeing the seat of the governor of the state must be a pan-Edo personality, who knows the state and had contributed and must evenly spread the needed development items to the three zones and local government areas of the state.

Ag. IGP DISBANDS EDO SQUAD FOR RUNNING OVER A CITIZEN
The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has ordered the disbandment of the Edo state tactical team, who were responsible for running over a citizen at Ekpoma
In a statement, force public relations officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi says the step aims to regularize and standardize police operations in the axis, while restoring public trust in the Police Force.
Meanwhile the operatives involved are currently facing disciplinary charges and administrative procedures in line with the commitment of the IGP to hold officers accountable for their actions.
According to a report from , there is speculation that Pastor Ize-Iyamu Osagie, a two-time gubernatorial candidate in Edo State, is being considered for a ministerial position in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration. However, it seems that the Edo-born politician is declining the offer, stating his interest in securing the 2024 Edo gubernatorial ticket under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ize-Iyamu Osagie has previously served as the Chief of Staff and Secretary to the State Government under former Governor Lucky Igbinedion from 1999 to 2007. Given his experience and political background, his decision regarding the upcoming elections will likely have a significant impact on the political landscape of Edo State in 2024.
The 2024 elections in Edo State are expected to be interesting, particularly with regards to the campaign for the gubernatorial ticket in Edo Central. There will likely be a fierce debate surrounding the allocation of the ticket, as Edo Central has had a relatively short period of representation in Osadebey Avenue since the restoration of democracy in 1999. Edo South and Edo North have shared the majority of the gubernatorial terms, with 16 and 8 years respectively. Therefore, many argue that it is now Edo Central's turn to hold the position.
Ize-Iyamu Osagie is regarded as a grassroots politician who has a deep understanding of the aspirations and sentiments of the people of Edo State. His decision in the coming weeks regarding his political ambitions will undoubtedly shape the expectations and dynamics leading up to the 2024 elections.

Opposition senators have vowed to resist any attempt to foist compromised leadership on the minority caucus.
The four principal positions reserved for the opposition parties in the Senate are minority leader, deputy minority leader, minority whip and deputy whip.
In a move to get his political associates into minority leadership positions in the Red Chamber, the immediate past governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike, met Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Thursday.
The meeting, which held at the National Assembly, lasted for several hours. Wike left the parliament around 6.30pm without talking to newsmen.
The National President of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF), Alhaji Yerima Shettima has said that despite the laudable moves Tinubu has made in less than one month in office as President, he was prepared to engage the administration if the government goes the wrong way.
In an interview with Saturday Vanguard, Shettima, also said past Ministers and their families should be brought to account for what they have done while in office and explain the sources of their wealth if the anti-corruption fight of Tinubu’s administration should be taken seriously. He also spoke on Asari Dokubo’s outburst about oil thieves, among other issues.
What is your take on President Bola Tinubu and what he has done so far?
So far, so good. In the last 20 days, we have seen actions and body language which have given hope, unlike the last eight years when, from the beginning, we thought President Buhari was going to perform magic. It took time before he appointed his ministers. We thought he was still consulting, looking for a different set of people, and the best brain, but the same characters that were there before came up even after six months, His administration ended up squashing the treasury and putting Nigeria in a huge debt.
Now, with the body language of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we can see some changes that we could not see in eight years.
In the previous government, Buhari made appointments and went to sleep even when the appointees failed. He pretended not to see them and there was massive corruption in his government. But now, with President Tinubu in the saddle, we can see the body language, especially from the CBN and the
