ASSURANCE OF OUR FAITH.
What is faith? It is the confident assurance that something we want is going to happen (HEB. 11:1, The Living NT).
Why the need for assurance in the Christianity of today? The reasons are too obvious to contest. Spiritual insecurity among Christians is widespread today and is due mainly to loss of confidence in the Word of God as well as lack of focus in spiritual direction. Many are simply not sure about what they believe and for this reason are half-hearted in their Christian service and in some cases, are even uncertain about how Christian should live.
John Calvin and the early Reformers gave the impression that whoever lacked assurance did not posses true-faith, because faith itself is the sure knowledge of God's favour towards us. At face value, this means that anyone who does not enjoy complete assurance cannot have genuine faith (although Calvin also taught that no believer is ever entirely free of doubts).
The Reformers were, of course, eager to stress the importance of personal assurance because they were reacting against the teaching of a church which flatly rejected the idea of believers being sure of what he believes.
This church taught that such assurance was given only by special revelation to a favoured few - like Stephen and Paul and to no one else. It was in the interest of this church to adopt this position because if a believer was sure of his or her eternal salvation in Christ, the church could no longer hold him or her captive. Absolution from a priest would no longer be needed.
The Bible tell us that God wants His children to be sure about two things namely: about going to heaven and about His care over them until they get there. Having assurance of faith is being sure of these two basic things.
If must be fully persuaded that God will do for us, his children, exactly what he has promised in the Bible (Jer. 29:11, Rom. 8: 16-19). It means knowing that in all our experiences in this life, God is working for our eternal good (Rom. 8: 28).
Having assurance that our implicit faith in God will never disappoint us makes the Christian life more relevant are fulfilling. Its transforms our outlook, puts our problems under our feet, helps us to face them with calmness and fortitude knowing fully well that this hope does not disappoint us--". Rom. 5:5 (G.N.B). It means knowing in our hearts and minds the hope to which God has called us (Eph. 1: 18).
But in spite of all these available assurances in the Bible, insecurity of faith, hope and assurance of Christians in the Word of God is common these days. Fleeting faith has become common place among some church goers today who profess (or do they possess) faith in the God they claim to serve.
It is fast becoming apparently difficult these days to give satisfactory explanation to the genuineness of the faith of a "Christian" who went to spend seven days with a "Prophet" on a prayer mountain. As he/she had just descended with his hallowed bottle of water in his hand headed straight away to where another fasting and prayer meeting was going on. The question of Jesus to his disciples also find a repeat here to this "Christian" who is unstable in faith", where is your faith" (Lk. 8: 25). So "have faith in God" (Mark. 11: 22).
The word "where" (Lk. 8: 25) denotes something missing or a thing you can not locate its whereabouts. The faith of the disciples in Jesus and the miracles he did in their presence was somehow lost to the 'storm of wind' (Lk. 8:23). Jesus therefore had to rebuke them, where did you get your faith missed out? Where did you dump it? Why did you lose it so soon?
This question also speaks volume to Christians of our time. Lack of faith in God alone had made a shipwreck of many professing Christians today. Faith has lost its savour. Faith seems to be anything today apart from implicit repose in God and His written Word in the Bible. How then shall Christian live the Christian lives to the full, the full potential of their Christian lives as well as the full benefits of their faith. Life will be adversely affected if faith is ineffective. The good news is, they need not remain in this condition.
God has translated us positionally, moving us away from death to life, from darkness to light, from life to insecurity to security in Christ, from uncertainty of what our tomorrow may be to the certainty of a better tomorrow in the hands of the One who holds our past, present and the future.
This assurance of being kept in safe hands is what is known as faith-faith in God and His infallible Word.
Faith takes care of everything God designed our lives to be. The full implementation of this rest not only in the measure of faith needed to actualize it, but in total dependence upon God who makes it to happen.
Ephesians Chapter one verses 3, 17-19 reads thus:
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in heavenly places in Christ.
That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened (understanding Faith to know all that God is and all that He is to those who believe in Him) that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding Greatness of His power towards us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power."
These omnipresent resources at the disposal of Christians are often not recognized or are being misappropriated as they journey through life. They seem not to know the value of what they have or perhaps they do not know the right way to attain it.
A tale is told about a wealthy art collector who didn't know how wealthy he was. He had about a painting of great value and decided his collection would never be complete without it. He determined to purchase it at any price. There was only one problem - he didn't know where it was being kept. He called his assistant and told him to go and search for the treasure.
Some months later, his assistant returned, having travelled round the world. 'Where?' Asked the collector. 'In your own collection', the assistant replied.
In our quest for assurance, it is easy to make the same mistake. We search for that something extra without realizing that we possess it all the time. There are some "new-found faith" preacher who are all out to deceive and mislead people in order to hold them perpetually to their touch-and-go miraculous power, thereby taking captive many innocent and unsuspecting souls. But in the real sense of it, who is to blame? We think the unstable 'Christian', who cannot hold to the faith of the Bible, has given occasion for blame.
A Christian is supposed to be different from the Ninevites - knowing his right hand from his left hand in matters of faith and creed (Jonah 4: 11). A man of faith does not go from mountain to valley looking for God. He has the assurance of faith in Him that God is right there wherever he is. God's constant presence is always assuring, (Heb. 13:5).
Jesus assured the Samaritan woman: "Woman, believe me, the hour is coming, when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem worship the Father. But -- the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship him. God is spirit and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth (John 4:21, 23-24). Worshipping God in spirit and truth demands that we release our faith to actualize all that God designed our lives to be.
Note: Faith lays hold of God's promises, rejoices in God's power, experiences God's presence and keeps itself in God's love. So, have faith in God.

I know that you have postponed your salvation many times.
You have always held the position that one can find Jesus any day.
However, you are very wrong.
You should note that the devil will stop at nothing to hinder you from accepting Jesus into your life. He's scared that you'll escape from his prison and so he will do everything in his power to resist you.
Now listen, in your own strength or will power, you can not turn to JESUS for salvation. No matter how easy it may look, it's the greatest miracle on earth; that one would be washed of his/her sins and become a new creature. What a wonder; to be called a child of GOD!
So, when it is Today, decide to leave your old ways and cling to JESUS who alone can save you.
'Today' may mean that "in the day you know unmistakably that the mercies of God has found you, don't hesitate to say 'Yes' to JESUS."
If you keep waiting for a feeling before you say "I surrender to Your love JESUS", you may wait in vain.
Salvation is not a feeling but an inward transformation revealed in time by infallible proofs of the workings of the Holy Spirit, within and upon a certain life.
So, stop looking for feelings and plunge yourself into JESUS, trusting in His word to save you as soon as you confess, renounce and forsake your sins.
Remember that TOMORROW may be too late. Stop procrastinating your salvation! A stitch in time saves nine.
I end today's letter to you with this scripture:
