Dear fellow farmer,
The continuous increase in price of feeds and other inputs is not peculiar to you alone. Everyone is feeling the heat and I know you might be considering quitting the poultry business. Has this thought ever crossed my mind? YES (gbogbo oloya ni o nse, sorry if you don't understand Yoruba)
But do you know what? Quitting is not the solution. Before you quit, I will advise you to think through it before concluding.
There are some reasons why you shouldn't quit
1. Once you quit, you lose all your customers
2. It's not easy to start again after quitting. Cost of inputs are increasing everyday and when you want to start again, the price might be unbearable.
3. If your capital is not working, you end up spending it.
What to do stay in business
1. Reduce the number of birds you stock and if possible diversify.
2. Try as much as possible to avoid middlemen(I'm not against middlemen and I know their worth in the supply chain. But to stay in business this season, avoid them)
3. Buy your feeds at once. This will make you escape weekly increase in price of feeds.
4. Source for quality day old chick. Once you have quality chicks, your production success rate is already above 60%, couple with quality feed and management, you are good to go.
5. Keep mortality rate low. Once the mortality rate is above 5%, you're already losing your profit.

Farmers are quick to share their success stories but won't talk about their failures. In all, farming both livestock and crop is not for the faint hearted. The truth is farming is lucrative and can enrich you within short time. Likewise, it can also send you to the village within a short time. I've heard of farmers stocking their farm with broiler DOC and by day 10, all the birds are gone. Even crop farmers losing hectares of investment to drought, pest and diseases.
Before venturing into farming, take time to learn the rudiments, don't faith it so you won't fade out. Don't be lazy to do the necessary things on farm. I do tell people that farming is not for the lazy. There are days you won't feel like going to farm but you just have to encourage yourself. Think about your investment, think about what you stand to gain or lose if you don't do the needful.
In conclusion, be ready to face any challenge that springs up. Challenges are springboard to improvement in your management practices. You can't compare someone that has experienced certain incidence to someone experiencing for the first time.
In all I wish you the best in your endeavors.

Your poultry pen is not a tourist center. Don't allow visitors into your pen. They can look from afar but entering is a No-No. If there's need for anyone to enter, then it must be your farm attendants or your veterinary doctor and high level of biosecurity must be maintained.
Oh I can hear someone says what's biosecurity? Well, biosecurity is simply preventing disease causing agents from entering or leaving any place where they can pose a risk to farm animals and man. The main reason for biosecurity is to keep infection of your animal at a low level.
What to do?
Provide a foot bath at the entrance of your pen
Block every holes through which rodents and birds can enter your pen.
Thoroughly disinfect your pen after every production cycle
Attend to younger animal first before the older ones. Old animals have high immunity compared to the younger ones.
Stay blessed.

We are gradually moving to the period where poultry farms lose moderate to high number of birds due to heat stress. The temperature is high which makes humans not to be comfortable, talkless of birds that do not have sweat glands to cool off their body.
This is the time when people complain that they met their birds dead with no visible symptom. Considering the cost of day old bird, coupled with high cost of feed, you should agree with me that farmers should do everything possible to protect their birds so they can make profits after selling their birds.
These are some of the things that can be done to help birds cope with heat stress;
1. Withdraw feed from the feeders from 11-12noon when the temperature increases and reintroduce feed when the weather is cool. This can be around 5pm in the evening.
2.Make sure the water in their drinker is cool. Once you noticed the water is becoming warm, change it. You can add Iced block to make it cool. Also vitamin C can also be added. This is sold over the counter in pharmacy or vet stores
3. Be available in the pen to monitor the birds. This is not the time to pour feed and water then leave the farm for a long time. When you noticed a bird is visibly shaking and feeling hot, you can help it by dipping the bird into cool water but make sure the head is not submerged.
4. Make sure the pen is well ventilated. Don't overstock. When the pen is poorly ventilated, the temperature in such pen will increase, coupled with the temperature emitted from the birds may hasten the death of the birds. All side covers must be opened.

DISINFECTANTS
Disinfectants play major role in the success of poultry production. They help in destroying or inactivating microbes(bacteria, fungi and virus) on farm equipment and buildings. It is also used to spray the brooding house after washing. If these microbes are not controlled, it leads to infection which cause death and slow growth rate in poultry birds. It also leads to increase in cost of production. There are various brands with different active ingredients in the market. Examples of disinfectants are:
-Alcohol.
-Chlorine and chlorine compounds.
-Formaldehyde(Formalin)
-Glutaraldehyde.
-Hydrogen peroxide.
-Iodophors.
-Orthophthalaldehyde (OPA)
-Peracetic acid.
