Re-Ubete Cultural Festival
Ubete Festival is the festival of an Otaru title holder in Igarra (Etuno) who worshiped the Ubaru daity ( god of fertility) on that day on behalf of Eziezu group of families (Clans). Just like the Oshidu title holder who worshiped the Asau deity (god of defence) on behalf of Eziobe group of families (Clans) through the phenomenal appearance of Idowo masquerade, and the Oshemdase worshiped the Inyama deity ( god of rainfall) that climax with the efficacious song of Igu reyin reyin that induces rainfall while Eshimozoko family (Clan) controls the Okute deity that symbolises and the embodiments of kingship, while Anona and Anoseri families (Clans) attuned their ancestors through their various Opete stools, while the Idakoriko deity (god of protection) belong to all Etuno people irrespective of family (Clan) inclinations.
On the day of the feast of Ubete, the Otaru worshipped the Ubaru festish. The deity is dedicated to soil fertility. It worship is to ursher in moderate rainfall and sunshine in the approaching wet season. The ultimate aim is to achieve rich harvest from the farm crops. The festival features the beating of Arigede drums which is usually through the streets with the chief priest who is the Otaru title holder in his ceremonial white Rob dress leading the group. Pitto is provided for each age group and Farm implements are kept out of site on that day.
In the evening, Otaru’s servant priest called Ochaibogaboga sits near the Otaru’s domestic Ubaru shrine where two lives sticks have been planted on each side of the shrine. The trees branches are trimmed on that day and decorated with tender palm leaves (adambara), which are tied to join the two trees. Young boys dance to Arigede songs, the shrine priest sprinkles concocted liquid that signifies an antidote (ero) against any bad charms or evil spells. The main Arigede song on that occasion is Orishi che, oyi che orokoto ipopo, meaning moderate rainfall, plus moderate sunshine.
Meanwhile, in the early hours of the day a ram is usually taken to Eba, uphill for sacrifice to appeased the gods at the feet of the main Ubaru deity where it is domiciled.
"Ariwo Ovejijo", is neither a name of any personality in the chequered history of Igarra (Etuno) people of Akoko-Edo local government area of Edo State.
The words "Ariwo Ovejijo", is an adopted Yoruba praised words that was corrupted from the words Ariwo Obejojo.
It was first used as a praised words for Otaru Idanage (1930-1966), by a group of members of Eziezu families (Clans) that comprises of Andede, Eshinagada, Eshinogun, Eshinavaka and Andiba who were then based in Ibadan in the early 1940s, who tagged themselves "Eziezu Royal Family" when Chief A. B. Mayaki of Eshimozoko family (Clan) was out to resuscitate Oshemi dynasty With the title of Oshinoyi (King) of Igarra (Etuno) between (1945-1959).
It has to be recalled that, it was the fall of Oshemi dynasty at the second half of 17th century and the resultant effect of which gave birth to the formation of family (Clan) alignments in Igarra (Etuno).
The first and the oldest families (Clans) alignment was that of Idokoni group of families (Clans) that comprises of Eshimozoko, Eshinagada and Anoseri.
This first alignment came about as a result of a war that broke out between the early Etuno settlers and and the emigrants from Idah area. Arido drums were captured from them and the three families (Clans) jointly controls the drums.
There was nothing like treathy of any kind that was reached between any personality before the land was acquired. Initially, our people live side by side with the early settlers that include. Anafuas, Aninvas, Andokonis, Anupatas, Anumamaroyes etc. Most of all these group of people were very cruel and treacherous to our people. They poisoned our children that were left at home while our people went to farm or hunting. Atimes, the poison was informed of pressing or inserting a broom inside the genetals of our innocent children and our cried till they died. With this type and others wicked behaviours towards our, a war broked out between our people and them and they were defeated. Most of them were exterminated while few ran to the neighbouring villages and other got absorbed into some families (Clans) at Igarra (Etuno).
Subsequently and after the fall of Oshemi dynasty at Igarra (Etuno), Eziobe group of families (Clans) that comprises of Eziodu, Ezioga, Eziakuta, Anoverewa and Eziakozi and the Eziezu group of families (Clans) that are made up of Andede, Eshinagada. Eshinogu, Eshinavaka and Andiba were formed.
Towards the end of 19th century, this alignments of families (Clans) took another dimension with the addition of other families (Clans) joining the two major groups of families (Clans) at Igarra.
Anonyete, Anona and Eshimozoko families (Clans) joined the Eziobe group while Anoseri family (Clan) picked tent with the Eziezu group till date.
In all these seemingly alignments that has taken place in Igarra (Etuno), it has to be abundantly made clear that they were both occasioned by marriage of convenience cm political interest which goes along with it.
There is no historical record or reference point that before 1960s, that ever mentioned the words "Ariwo Ovejijo". It came to prominence during Halim's enquiry of 1968. Eshinavaka family (Clan) mentioned it their memorandum. Eshinogun and Andiba were silent about it all through the enquiry, while Eshinagada family (Clan) in their own memorandum denied it and went on to say it was "Agada" that led Etuno people and perhaps founded Igarra (Etuno) land and they also claimed that they were the senior among Eziezu group of families (Clans), that Andede family (Clan) took over their seniority after their own father who was a herbalist that strikes the Niger River with a magic wand and the water divided into two separate parts for easy passage by Etuno and Opete people during Exodus from Idah area
This story about the use of magic wand to cross the Niger River was told to portray Etuno prince founder as a super natural human being.
Canoes were used as a means of crossing the Niger River at Itobe ( Etube); Andede family (Clan) is regarded as senior among Eziezu group of families (Clans) because they were the first family (Clan) to be conferred with Otaru title by Eshimozoko family (Clan) as they co-exist together in Uzumi quarters at Utua, Igarra.
Andede on their own memorandum and oral evidence denied completely the identity of "Ariwo Ovejijo" and went further to say that "Uno" led and founded Etuno land.
But, Eshimozoko family (Clan) on their part maintained that, their father prince Oshemi Ozoko who led Etuno people out of Idah area founded Igarra (Etuno) land.
To buttress this their stance that, before Halim's enquiry of 1968. Oshemi is always been greeted first in Etuno cultural parlance as a reminiscent of being the king and founder of Igarra(Etuno): as, "Maku Oshemi Onanyinmi" that means , I greet Oshemi Onayinmi my lord, three times by the town criers before mentioning any other personality during a public proclamations, adding that all the regalia that were referred to by our colonial masters in their intelligence reports that was compiled in April, 1940 that the descendants insignia of the office of Etuno prince founder including a large native Bell, a set of drums , staff of the office of a traditional ruler and other personal effects that are till date still being preserved by Eshimozoko family (Clan) at the Okute Royal House.
The issue of the "life partridge" ( Ekuse), that you referred to was one of the folks tale stories that were told by our fathers while they were awake at night to their children about their experiences in life. The early settlers never handed over Etuno land to anyone but rather our ancestors engaged them on warfare.
Most of them were exterminated while few ran to the neighbouring villages and other get absorbed into some ot the families (Clans) at Igarra (Etuno).
Our colonial masters interviewed two Otarus: Otaru Aido (1920-1952) of Eshinavaka family (Clan) and Otaru Idanage (1930-1966) of Eshinogun family (Clan) with the aid of an interpreter called John Oviroh of Eshinogun Anaboro. Both Otarus reign simultaneously at Igarra.
The colonial masters interviewed them on historical information about Igarra. Neither of them ever mentioned "Ariwo Ovejijo"
It has to be recalled that in Igarra (Etuno), there are four days counting. Ude, Ofosu, Ube and Amomo. Eziezu group of families (Clans) and Eshimozoko family (Clan) uses Amomo and Ofosu as their traditional days of ceremonies while Eziobe group of families (Clans) as well as including Anonyete, Anona and Anoseri families (Clans) uses Ude and Ube as their ceremonial days. Of course all major festivals are mostly done on Amomo days. The names of those days has no meaning as they were also adopted from the early settlers.
The name Etuno was a corruption from the word Eteno just as the name Etube was corrupted by our Opete brothers to Itobe.
Eteno is an expression that was used by our forefathers when they arrived here after the place was discovered by a group of hunters.
I appreciate the courage of my dear brother who in his own personal volition brought this topic of discussion here on this platform. Most people dare not do that for fear of being called "Anda fanatic". It has made us to duged into our historical achieves to unearth some silient historical facts that only very few that are privileged to have. It is my hope that next time who ever wants to delved into such an issue should strive to always say how it is and not how it should be.

"ANDAISM" AND IGARRA'S EBBING DEVELOPMENT
By Ray Festus Symperr
Our forefathers, out of their quest to berth true love, peace and unity in the community, cleverly and solidly worked together to lay her foundation on the healthy platform of "àndá" which, with the passage of time, becomes polarized such that "àndá", rather than being used to berth true love, peace and unity among the people as originally intended, is, in recent times, being used to promote hatred, rivalry and disunity in the community all in the name of kingship tussle.
It is not untrue that such age-long practices as eating of "Ìyá àndá" together and inter-marriage, among others, are still seen being practised on the platform of "àndá", but it remains an undeniable truth that they are no longer done on the platform of true love, peace and unity upon which the arrangement by our forefathers was established. This generation ignorantly married it to the lingering kingship tussle thereby gradually chasing developments away from our community.
Although we still eat "Ìyá àndá" and observe other age-long "àndá" stuffs together, does that mean that we truely love one another as a people? The answer is 'No' as our day-to-day co-habitation is more of hypocrisy. We may profess to have friends from both family divides, but such friendship gets eroded the moment the spirit that is currently ruling the age-long "àndá" arrangement rears its ugly head.
Isn't it sad and painful that the current "àndá" platform does not support personal misdeeds being severed or separated from the person's "àndá" affiliation? It has become a practice that when a person commits a crime, the first thing that comes to mind is to cast the offence committed by him/her on the "àndá" that he or she belongs.
For example, around February 2019, my cousin's daughter was burnt to ashes by her vagabond husband from the opposite family divide. What the current "àndá" arrangement does is to not only limit the committed offence to the culprit, but to his "àndá" affiliation which knows nothing about the offence thereby igniting hatred between two or more "àndá" affiliations. As I have always said, Igarra people who are globally known to be hospitable cannot suddenly become so wicked to send killers after one another. That is totally alien in our community! This is my candid submission and I stand to be corrected!
As a family with understanding, when the heinous crime was committed by the vagabond hubby of our daughter, we refused to allow the offence spill on the culprit's family affiliation, but in its stead clamoured that he faced the music all alone. And following our respect for the culprit's family affiliation whose delegates severally came begging, we chose to forgive as a people bonded by love. What the current spirit of "àndá" does which, to me, is anti-development is to cast the offence that is personally committed on the culprit's family affiliation. Abi na im "àndá" he belong send am? The answer is 'No'!
We all were witnesses to the huge role which "àndá" played recently that almost tore the community apart. "Àndá" took the central position as the personal misdeeds of the suspects were not severed from their family affiliations. It ended up becoming a rivalry between the two family divides thereby tearing the innocent community apart. In what way has this helped Igarra developmentally? What project has it attracted to us as a people and community?
Today, there is no gainsaying that the true spirit with which "àndá" as a healthy platform for the true love, peace and unity of Igarra community was initiated by our forefathers has been eroded with attendant adverse effects on the community's development.
It is no longer news and not untrue that there is a lingering kingship tussle in Igarra, but must it be used to bastardize the age-long ”àndá" arrangement which was meant to achieve and sustain true love, peace and unity for the overall development of Igarra? A friend of mine, a renowned educationist based in the Middle Belt from Igarra was fully ready to establish a tertiary institution in Igarra thereby adding some tremendous value to her developmentally, but very unfortunately, the family he approached for land purchase allegedly refused to welcome him simply because he was from the opposite family divide. While he is still scouting for land, it is not unlikely that he shall consider citing such project elsewhere outside Igarra. What a bad omen! Isn't this the handiwork of the bastardized "àndá" arrangement all in the name of kingship tussle?
The skyrocketing rate at which we are walking and working to twist the developmental hand of Igarra anticlockwisely, may be a sizeable proportion of us have another Igarra that we can call our own. Frankly speaking, I see this generation, except a deliberate u-turn is made, being hugely cursed by future generations.
As I have always maintained, there is no community that is kingship tussle-free, but the actors scarcely allow it to adversely affect their community's development. Responsible communities do not engage in kingship tussles at the expenses of their overall development. As much as I know, kingship tussles are fought using the instrumentality of the available laws of the land, while the community simultaneously thrives developmentally.
Our position is that the two family divides may engage in kingship tussle, but they must not allow it to undermine the development of our innocent community.
Thank you and God bless!
Happy birthday

See The Difference Between Mum And Mom That Everybody is Confused About •
The most confusing bit about English is that there is more than one English language. English is a very flexible language. It absorbs words from other cultures and makes them its own. It has very few fixed grammar rules, and those that exist often can’t be explained.
So many things make learning English difficult and confusing. Its grammar structure, its spelling, meanings and rules that contradict existing rules are difficult to master. … Learning English is definitely challenging but the fact is several languages are more difficult to learn than English.Especially now that we have more than 60% borrowed vocabulary (so more vocabulary is borrowed than isn’t), and this also acted as a catalyst for sound changes (mostly the Great Vowel Shift) that drastically changed English pronunciation (and also made English spelling so different from other European languages). It’s true that there are some strange irregular spellings, this is because it includes words from many languages and some very very old words. But English is much more regular in spelling than we think. In fact about 75% of English spelling is regular. … (Notice a lot of these words have silent letters in them.So sometimes you might be confuse about the deference between Mom and Mum.View pictures in App save up to 80% data. Both spellings are correct and derive from mommy and mummy. According to Ngram, Mom/mom is the more common spelling in America, while Mum/mum is more common in Britain.
We spell “mum” M-U-M because that’s the short form of “chrysanthemum” that we use for that particular flower.
And the word “mom”, on the other hand, is a slightly different story and it’s widely believed that the word was born from the much older word “mamma”.
Teach your daughter's that marriage is a beautiful thing, but also teach them that it's okay to walk away when it's toxic.
Teach them that there's nothing attractive about enduring pain an abuse.
Teach them that they are not dumping grounds for dysfunctional men.
Teach them that it's better to come back home with your bags, than return as a co**se.
