🇺🇲 WW II uncovered Lawrence "Yogi" Berra Veteran of D-Day

Lawrence Peter Berra, of St Louis Missouri, enlisted with the US Navy on May 12, 1943 at the age of 18 years old. Yogi Berra was a member of the Norfolk Tars Baseball Team at the time. He would later sign with the New York Yankees after putting his career on hold to serve his country.

"Berra served in the US Navy as a gunner’s mate on the attack transport USS Bayfield during the D-Day invasion of France. A Second Class Seaman, Berra was one of a six-man crew on a Navy rocket boat, firing machine guns and launching rockets at the German defenses at Omaha Beach. During an interview on the 65th Anniversary of D-Day, Yogi confirmed that he was sent to Utah Beach during the D-Day invasion as well."

According to an interview with the Baseball in Wartime website: “It was just like a Fourth of July celebration,” Berra later recalled of his D-Day experience. Yogi spent 12 days manning the rocket boat protecting the Allied troops on the shore while shooting down enemy aircraft.

Yogi Berra also served in North Africa and Italy, and was sent home to the United States after suffering a hand wound. He was then stationed at the New London Sub Base until his discharge.

Second Class Seaman Lawrence Peter Berra was the recipient of the Purple Heart Medal for injuries sustained to his hand when hit by enemy fire.

"In the years following his Navy service, he continued to support the troops. In 1950, he participated in a campaign with the Treasury Department to promote the purchase of U.S. savings bonds. In 2009, he received the Lone Sailor Award and, in 2010, he was honored with the Audie Murphy Award for his Navy service."

"Yogi Berra appeared as a player, coach or manager in every one of the 13 World Series that New York baseball teams won from 1947 through 1981. Overall, he played or coached in 22 World Series, 13 on the winning side. In 1972, Berra was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. That year, the Yankees retired his uniform, number 8." Lawrence Peter Berra passed away on September 22, 2015 at the age of 90. He lies in rest at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover New Jersey. Lest We Forget.

🇺🇲 WW II uncovered Veterans of D-Day: Harry Hudec: 82nd Airborne Division

Private Harry Hudec, of 11709 Park Hill Avenue Cleveland Ohio, enlisted in the Army on October 24, 1942 at the age of 20. He served with the 82nd Airborne Division, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Headquarters Company.

"Operation Neptune was an all-important airborne phase of Overlord, the name given to the massive plan for D-Day invasion of Europe. The 82nd Airborne was an integral part of Operation Neptune. Because the 504th PIR ranks had been depleted due to the Italian Campaigns the 507th and the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiments were attached to the 82nd for this operation.

The 82nd's mission was to destroy vital German supply bridges and capture causeways leading inland across the flooded areas behind the Normandy beaches where seaborne forces would land to gain control of roads and communications. More than 10,000 All-Americans landed by parachute and glider on June 6, 1944 as part of the greatest airborne assault in history.'

'The 508th was responsible for the Southwest quadrant of the 82nd Airborne sector in Normandy.Their primary targets were bridges over the Douve River, located at Brienville and Beuzeville-la-Bastille. Clouds and heavy anti-aircraft fire caused the formations to break up and many of the planes to stray off course. The confusion was also compounded by the Wehrmarcht's presence in the scheduled drop zones. This prevented the pathfinders from marking them and delayed many pilots from flashing the jump lights until they had overshot the drop zones. Both the 507th and 508th were scattered over the Normandy countryside."

Hudec jumped into Normandy on D-Day around 1:30 AM and fought on Hill 30 between Chef du Pont and Picauville. On June 15th, he suffered a combat injury and was hidden and cared for by a local family over 4 days until the arrival of German troops. Harry was hospitalized to remove the hand gr***de fragments from his injury. He quickly returned to service.

Harry went on to jump into Holland as part of Operation Market-Garden and also fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Pvt. Hudac is shown below during a preparation for a practice jump. According to his enlistment records Harry was 6 ft 4 and 1/2 in tall. He was also stated to be a Regimental Champion boxer.

After the war Harry returned to Cleveland, Ohio. On June 19, 1946 he married Dorothy Stevens of Sedalia, Missouri. The couple had three children, numerous grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Harry retired from the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company after 43 years of service and was an active member of the Solon VFW. (Source: Cleveland Plain Dealer)

Harry Hudac passed away on March 28, 2007 at the age of 85. He lies in rest at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Sedalia, Missouri. Lest We Forget.
