Emerging from the diverse landscapes of Jos, Taraba, Benue, and Abuja, a league of extraordinary rappers ascended to the forefront, leaving an indelible mark on the industry.

MI Abaga, Iceprince Armani Mimi , jessejagz, Terry Madaki Tha Rapman, and Six Foot Plus emerged as torchbearers of this transformative movement. Hailing from the rich cultural tapestry of Jos and Taraba, M.I Abaga and Ice Prince brought an unparalleled lyrical prowess, capturing hearts with their poetic verses and magnetic stage presence. Their impactful contributions reshaped the very essence of Nigerian rap.

Jesse Jagz, a luminary in his own right and with roots tracing back to Jos and Taraba, added an avant-garde dimension to the genre, infusing his music with depth, innovation, and raw authenticity. His trailblazing approach cemented his status as an icon of Northern Nigerian Hip Hop.

Meanwhile, Terry Tha Rapman and Six Foot Plus, emerging from the vibrant locales of Benue and Abuja, contributed a distinct flavor to the scene. With their unique styles and lyrical finesse, they fortified the movement, elevating the rap landscape to unprecedented heights.

The Recording Academy has added a new music category for African music; Best African Music Performance for the 66th Annual Grammy Awards.

It also announced other additions – Best Alternative Jazz Album, and Best Pop Dance Recording. Additionally, the existing categories of producer of the year, non-classical and songwriter of the year, non-classical will be moved to the general field.

The category additions and amendments were voted on and passed at the Recording Academy’s most recent semiannual Board of Trustees meeting, held last month.

Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy in a statement said the news categories represent the diverse range of relevant musical genres.

“The Recording Academy is proud to announce these latest Category changes to our Awards process. These changes reflect our commitment to actively listen and respond to the feedback from our music community, accurately represent a diverse range of relevant musical genres, and stay aligned with the ever-evolving musical landscape,” Harvey Mason jr. said

The addition of an award category for African is a recognition of recordings that utilise unique local expressions from across the African continent, the Academy said.

The category includes but is not limited to the Afrobeat, Afro-fusion, Afro Pop, Afrobeats, Alte, Amapiano, Bongo Flava, Genge, Kizomba, Chimurenga, High Life, Fuji, Kwassa, Ndombolo, Mapouka, Ghanaian Drill, Afro-House, South African Hip-Hop, and Ethio Jazz genres.
